The "Etch-A-Sketch" Candidate

Back in the 1980s, longtime political pundit Michael Kingsley wrote that, “A gaffe is when a politician tells the truth – some obvious truth he isn’t supposed to say.”  That’s what Romney senior campaign strategist Eric Fehrnstrom did yesterday in his appearance on CNN:

“…I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign.  Everything changes.  It’s almost like an Etch-a-Sketch.  You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.”

This has enormous potential to be a defining image for Mitt Romney—not unlike John Kerry’s 2004 statement that “I actually did vote for the $87 billion, before I voted against it.”  Like an Etch-a-Sketch, Romney is square-edged, mechanical, opaque.  Like an Etch-a-Sketch, Romney has difficulty negotiating twists, turns and curves.  Like an Etch-a-Sketch, Romney changes his image and words quickly and easily, without the least bit of hesitation.

See?  It’s fun!  And anyone can play.  Add your own ways Mitt Romney is like an Etch-a-Sketch in the comments.
