Wow. Over at Roll Call, they’ve already written Dick Lugar’s political obituary. I was under the impression that the race was still fairly close. It’s hard for me to imagine a conservative party not only not valuing Sen. Lugar but actually throwing him out of office for being insufficiently slavish to wingnut orthodoxy. If this goes down the way Roll Call suspects, it will be a sad day for the country. On the other hand, it will create a potential pick-up for the Democrats.

But it’s easy to imagine a radical party doing that. Which is what the Republican Party has become.
We know no one is safe, and it has paid for the right wing in how you see former moderates in Congress act. There’s nothing new here, and it’s not even surprising.
On the other hand, let’s be blunt. Every long-time senator deserves to lose. Think about all the things Congress has done since 1976 to dismantle regulation that have been disastrous, the wars, etc. and you’ll find Lugar involved. Now, his opponent is worse, yes, but my advice is that if you want to keep your seat for the rest of the life don’t screw up the whole country.
Actually showing up for votes is apparently now a bad thing.
THE GOP IS CRAZY
I don’t know what has come over the lot of you (maybe you have a little more Broder in you than you’ll admit?), but this is a fantastic day.
There is no such thing as a good Republican. Dick Lugar is not an honorable man, he’s a scumbag. His votes have cost hundreds of thousands of people their lives. Any humiliation for him (and similar members of his tribe like Arlen Spector or that guy from Delaware who lost to the Witch Lady) is karmic justice.
When your enemies are driven before you, learn to love their lamentations a little, will ya?
New poll looks grim for Lugar.
But suppose Lugar were to lose the primary and then win re-election as an independent. Wouldn’t he then be listed in the roll calls as “Lugar (Ind-Ind)”.
Heh, good one. Actually, trying to pull a Murkowski may be Lugar’s best option.
Not in Indiana. Looks as if Lugar may be not only a lame duck after Tuesday, but a dead one as well.
Too bad, I love seeing the rats tearing each others’ hearts out.
