Well I am so excited that I have found your post because I have been searching for some information on this for almost three hours! You’ve helped me a lot indeed and by reading this article I have found many new and useful information about this… Google page1services
Thanks, ask, for the tip on The Secret of Roan Inish. We watched it the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Part of the fun was that I have some ancestors from around the area where the film was shot. It seems sad to me that so much of our folklore that was once a great part of human culture has been shoved aside to make way for technological diversions. I’ve always enjoyed hearing the old tales, beginning with the brothers Grimm at an early age.
Glad you liked it. curly is good at finding little nuggets like that. I’m wondering what is currently in her Netflix queue, going back to NY on Tuesday since my contract here is now at an end.
Yes, looking forward to that, though only for 2 weeks before I head for Norway for 6-7 weeks, then back to NY on a more permanent basis. And eventually, I need to find a new job, not quite ready for retirement yet (well, some ambiguity about that 😉 ).
We had a nice heavy rayin last night-finally! I think the kids may need to mow the grass his week (hasn’t needed it since early July, it’s been so dry).
In other news, today is Finny’s last day of summer camp preschool, and i think he’s going to miss iit. Good thing we joined the Y and can go the pool to entertain him.
We’ve received just enough rain this month to be technically above average for July. Unfortunately, we’d really need something like a 10-15 inch soaking in order to break the drought. So, I’m just hoping folks remember to respect the burn bans and refrain from flicking their cigarettes out their car windows for a bit longer. In the meantime, I keep driving by places that had such beautiful greenery a scant two years ago, yet are littered with dead trees and brush today.
You would think those Colorado fires would serve as a big enough warning to folks about easily dry vegetation catches fire….
We have a week of daily thunderstorms in our fore cast. We got a few last niht, and it looks like we’ll get another one today (hopefully after we’ve had a chance to take all the kids to the pool).
Things here are beginning to green up again, but it’s still way too dry.
I see she mentions malaria. If she is pursuing mosquito borne disease, perhaps she might be interested in my cousin Ken’s lifetime work. He’s currently with the Institut Pasteur in Paris.
I sure do. We’ve been moving my mom from her house to a senior living facility. We’ve got her settled in her new place this weekend but I feel like we’re never going to get that house emptied out and cleaned up.
Thanks. She’s a bit unsettled by being unsettled but I think she will adjust pretty soon. She knows quite a few people there and they all love living there.
I feel your pain. Went through that 3 years ago with my mom when she was 90 yo. She had become a mail saver in her last couple of years and we had to go through an incredible volume of stuff. Hope she’s happy in her new digs. My mom was. She used to smile and exclaim, “I don’t have to cook now!”
Mom was good about throwing away junk mail but there was just about nothing else she did throw away. We put out 26 bags of trash and we’ve probably got that amount to go.
Checked Weather Underground just as it let up (curly and I are planning a long weekend in Lenox, MA, so forecast had to be checked). It looked like a fairly small storm on the radar, it was over in about 20 minutes.
We’ve been getting one of those little pop-ups about once a week – very localized. The last one was barely 1/10″ but lots of wind for a few minutes brought trees down here and there.
Pop-ups are about as good as it gets in my region too. Seems we’re going to get something of a replication of the Dustbowl era – this time without the dust storms.
Sounds wonderful! I’ll be sweltering at the county fair, helping the local candidates for office. I went out campaigning with our congressional candidate yesterday afternoon & evening. She seemed to get a good reception everywhere we went. Finished up at the fair, where she had hundreds of people to handshake and lots of babies available to kiss.
You’re right, I do enjoy it. Got to go door to door with Birch Bayh several years ago – he was very warm and personable. A campaigner from an earlier time.
Cool – and she made the DFA endorsement list! If she pulls it off, we might actually move rural Indiana left a bit. Guess I still have some hope left after all.
I just got a robocall from some outfit trying to sell me a home medical alert system with scary blather about delayed response from EMS, fire dept., blah, blah. I suppose they have my geezer demographic burned into their little hard drives now. If they ever do a live call, I’ll tell them how I trained the cat to dial 911.
I can’t imagine why robocalls are still used. Most folks probably just hang up. It’s hard to believe that they accomplish much although the cost is relatively low.

The Olympic closing ceremony calls for youth of the world to compete and join the next games in four years. It’s fascinating to see a new generation come and conquer gold in London. Many, many firsts like Gabby Douglas.
Dutchman Zonderland pulled off the hardest release combination – a Cassina to Kovacs to Kolman – to become the first male Dutch gymnast to win Olympic gold. The triple combination has a difficulty rating of 7.9 and has never been performed before.
In athletics, a nineteen years-old Grenada’s Kirani James won his country’s first ever Olympic gold as he added the 400m title to his World Championship crown.
And titles are not easy to come by as there have been heartbreaking disappointments too. In 100m hurdles, Chinese Liu Xiang crashed out … again. How about California athlete Felix Sanchez (35) winning 400m hurdles, running for the Dominican Republic!
When he was 12 years-old, young Dorian van Rijsselberge (23) sat down with his dad and wrote down what goal he wanted to accomplish. He lived on the island Texel off the coast in The Netherlands, so in would be a watersport: sailing or wind surfing. The ultimate goal was to participate in the Olympics. The past week he blew away the competition and was already assured of the gold medal after the 8th of 10 races. Unbelievable. The RS:X sail board class will be dropped as an olympic sport, so his next goal will be participating in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in kite surfing. Great stuff.
Well I finally convinced Mrs. X to adopt a new baby, she was devastated after Chance(the tabby in my flog postings) passed far too soon (3yrs. 11 mo.). She’s happier than she’s been in some time.
Introducing Hope
Only a few hours later. Didn’t take her long to find the big bed.
We adopted her from a private, no-kill shelter. This is now her permanent home.
We didn’t get any smoke. I saw the report of it in my news yesterday evening. It said that it was SE of Story. The woods are scary dry. The combination of the heat, drought, and Tulip Tree scale has added more deadwood to the forest. I’m sure that the low winds yesterday helped keep the fire small.
I was thinking at the time how grateful we should be there weren’t 40 mph winds kicking up, with the Hoosier National Forest in such close proximity. The fire behavior of late has been quite spooky and way out of character for Indiana at this time of year due to the unusually low fuel moisture.
I talked to him last night. He hasn’t been able to get anywhere with an internet connection in quite awhile but he is doing okay and sends everybody a big hello.
Long overdue for a new cafe…where does the time go? I seem to never have enough of it lately.
Those little people are really time-eaters, aren’t they? We’re patiently waiting for grandchild #4, due to arrive in the next month or so.
That’s very exciting news!
Yep ~ pretty cool.

Oh boy, lookee and new little troll. Is it true that when CG makes a troll disappear, a progressive wins a house seat?
I’ll smite the comment…just wanted to fill in their sig line for a minute first.
Mmmmm, sounds tasty. I hope they get the kind with the chewy chunks.

Jim and I love that movie (the little girl is really amazing). If you’d like to try another John Sayles movie, we’d also highly recommend Lone Star.
Glad you liked it. curly is good at finding little nuggets like that. I’m wondering what is currently in her Netflix queue, going back to NY on Tuesday since my contract here is now at an end.
Wow, congrats on heading back to NYC!

I still mow every week as at least parts of it get high. Give Finny a hug for me!

Oh cool! I haven’t been to Saint Augustine in many years, but I have some fond memories of the time I spent there.
This is where the Spanish Consulate used to be. The sign is gone so I assume they are too. We always get some pottery while we’re here.
Bleh, in the office cleaning out. Lots of papers for the recirculation bin.
swimmer’s (and boyfriend) blog from Sierra Leone.
I tried to check the blog out but the server is down.
The link worked for me just now.
worked for me now, too.
Nice that you can follow her adventures.
This is the best way. Phone connections are iffy and expensive.
I see she mentions malaria. If she is pursuing mosquito borne disease, perhaps she might be interested in my cousin Ken’s lifetime work. He’s currently with the Institut Pasteur in Paris.
I’ll pass on the link. HKI is not so much looking at malaria as they do Neglected Tropical Diseases.
Rain, rain and more rain. I’m off to attempt to cut the very wet lawn. Wish me luck.
At least it’ll smell good.
If you want to send some rain to the central plains and much of the south, we’ll gladly accept it.
Midwest too!
Wish I could! Things are now starting to rot a bit here.
Too bad that no one reads Newsweek anymore.
Ha! Great cover!

Good morning!
They seem to be having a good time.
Back in NY. Up since 4.
Someone turned on the outdoor shower. Torrential rains coming down now.
Strange. We haven’t gotten it yet.

Welcome back! Sorry about the weather….
I wish you could send it to flyover country. I was just thinking wistfully of all-day rains.
Oh and welcome back to NYC.
It’s hot.

Here in the Hudson Valley as well. And going up in the next few days.
*snort*
I hope Jon Stewart got the “they both do it” out of his system for six months or so. He has so much more cred on the right, now.
Good morning!
Picking up a rental car in a couple of hours – going up to the Berkshires for the weekend. Escape the city heat.

Suffering for a good cause, well worth it, ID.
And I’m sure you’re having fun as well.
You’re right, I do enjoy it. Got to go door to door with Birch Bayh several years ago – he was very warm and personable. A campaigner from an earlier time.
Good on you. And great on her — I hope she does very, very well.
I’m hearing good things about her here, FWIW.
Cool – and she made the DFA endorsement list! If she pulls it off, we might actually move rural Indiana left a bit. Guess I still have some hope left after all.
Moving rural Indiana out of the 19th century would be nice.
Yeah, maybe they’d even get some fiber-o laid out your way!
Hmmm — maybe I could offer a “donation” that is really a bribe for a few thousand feet of new cable. 🙂
We did make one technological advance last week — at&t is now 3G out here.
Is anything at&t “technologically advanced”?
/snark
You can pick me up on your way north. 😉
OK, we’ll be passing your area around 1 pm.
I’m still waiting. :::taps foot:::

And with caller id, you don’t even have to hangup; you just completely ignore the call.
Dang pesky trolls!

Given my birthright to rugged American individualism, I absolutely don’t have to love that … but I do. 😉
We’re expecting you to produce a longform copy of your birthright.
Yeah ~ in triplicate and don’t forget the proper validation stamps!

Damn. The ‘Meh’ girl is back in my Google Ads. Make her go away.
Now you did it, you must stop talking about the ‘meh’ girl – Meh to be recognizied as an official Dictionary word.
Meh.
Maybe we need an anti-Meh.

They remind me of fireworks.
Or a person who stuck a finger in a light socket. 🙂
That’s the first time I’ve seen a baby version. They grow into fairly large bushes (called a buttonbush).
What is it? Arrogance, disguised form of racism/nationalism … at the 2012 London Olympics you have “plastic Brits”.
Born in Cuba, courageous triple jumper Yamile Aldama had no country to represent.
It’s way muggy here! It’s an a/c day. Off to work.
Its actually quite nice here today, although still way too dry. Storms predicted for this afternoon, but I’ll believe that if and when they arrive.
We’re supposed to get some, possibly today but more likely in the next few days.
It did arrive here during the night — our rain gauge shows just over an inch of rain.

Andi and JimF, did you get any smoke at your place yesterday from the 50 acre fire a few miles southwest of you?
