And by tomorrow I mean next week.
Earlier this year there was a fair amount of chortling (by Republicans) and hand-wringing (by Democrats) over the Obama campaign’s inability to decide on a slogan for its re-election campaign. 2008 had “Change We Can Believe In”, but early 2012 seemed to have a new slogan every week.
Very quietly over the last few weeks, that’s changed. “Forward” is the one word slogan that’s appeared on the front of almost every podium Pres. Obama has appeared behind recently.
With that in mind, I thought I’d lay down a marker for what the content will/should be for at least one of the prime-time speeches at next week’s Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Here’s an excerpt from the heart of the speech:
“Pres. Obama signed the Affordable Care Act, which strengthened Medicare. Millions of seniors are already receiving new Medicare benefits—no more doughnut hole for prescription drugs, free preventive care, strengthening the Medicare Trust Fund for years to come.
Last week the Republicans promised they’d take those benefits away! What’s more, under the Romney/Ryan plan insurance companies collect billions in unnecessary profits while seniors pay thousands more for health care each year, ending Medicare as we know it, and exhausting the Trust Fund in just four years.
There’s more work to do to improve our health care system, but they want to go “Backward!” and Barack Obama wants to go “Forward!”.”
Do likewise for education, energy, and the economy. And repeat …but they want to go (“Backward!”) and Barack Obama wants to go (“Forward!”).
I’m thinking it belongs in Joe Biden’s speech—with echoes from a few additional speakers.
What do you think the Democratic message should be next week?
