The senior senator from Nebraska, Mike Johanns, announced his retirement today. It’s a major surprise. He’s only 62 years old, and he’s serving his first term. He’s a giant in Nebraska politics, having served as the mayor of Lincoln, the governor, and as one of George W. Bush’s secretaries of agriculture. He could probably remain in the Senate for as long as he wants to, but he has decided to leave. In a letter to his constituents, he gave no specific reason for his decision not to run for reelection. He pointed out that he’s spent thirty-two years in public service and that that is enough.
Now, this is pure speculation, but I think it is not unlikely that Johanns wants out of Washington because of how Chuck Hagel is being treated by his colleagues in the Senate. Johanns replaced Hagel in the upper chamber, and they are friends. Johanns announced early on that he would vote to confirm Hagel as Secretary of Defense, and he was one of only four Republicans to oppose a filibuster of Hagel’s nomination (Orrin Hatch voted ‘present’).
No doubt, there are plenty of other reasons for members of Congress to be frustrated and disgusted, but there is a straw that will break every camel’s back. Perhaps watching Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) accuse Hagel of taking money from the North Koreans was that straw. Maybe it was watching the way McCain disrespected his former buddy. I doubt that Johanns will ever talk about it, but he can’t be happy about how Hagel has been treated.
I have a feeling that things have grown too toxic on a national level for the normally polite Nebraskans. First Hagel quit, then Ben Nelson, and now Mike Johanns. The state is certainly conservative, but it also has the only unicameral and nonpartisan state legislature.
The state might be conservative, but it’s also home to Omaha…which is a liberal bastion of folk, blues, and jazz musicians.
Can’t live today off that minimum wage unless you sleep on the factory floor
If there is anything great left in this sorry state it was built on the backs of the poor
So we buy and we sell for your corporate cartel and we vote when the contestant sings
A mind-control mix for our obedience, strong sleep-aids and hard energy drinks
Cause Freedom is not free
Neither is apathy
I saw elsewhere that the governor is term-limited, and would be a near-cinch if he goes for the seat, so perhaps it was gracefully moving aside by Johanns. On the other hand, it’s not really that helpful if the ‘reasonable’ Republicans don’t fight for their party at all.
I can see not wanting to get into a Tea Party tussle and debase yourself like Lindsay Graham is doing in this Congress, but quietly fading away will just encourage the bomb throwers to cry for someone MOAR CONSERVATIVE to replace him.
It’s not just the member leaving, it’s setting the debate for who replaces him. Right now you can only get pushback in a deep red seat from your right. I doubt there was much speaking up for moderation during the Storming of the Bastille, but what I can’t figure out is whether Reince Preibus is the government or the militia in an analogy.
IMO Johanns is running away. The coming DOD cuts to the big Air Force base near Lincoln are something he is unable to explain to his homies. Thus, he knows he will never get second term. The possible military base layoffs could also explain why Chambliss is running away. There are 6 or 7 bases in GA.
Close them all. Payback.
THis weekend, our house watched ten episodes of The Newsroom on projectfreetv, “reading” the program as chapters of a book. As recent historical drama. it represents a good antidote to the slow drain of “quietly bowing out” sane republicans. For a few hours, we could actually believe somebody had some pride of party. The fight for sanity in the republican party should have been waged long before the surrender in 2008.
“This sucks. I’m not accomplishing anything. Any warm body can sit here and obstruct legislation. Do you have any idea how much money I could be earning right now?”
It must suck to be a GOP legislator, no feeling of having accomplished anything in your job etc… wouldn’t be surprised if Boehner wasn’t the only drunkard there…
The only way it would not suck is if you saw your job as simply occupying the seat so a Democrat can’t occupy it and vote for the end of Western Civilization or something.
But if that was how you saw your job, that would suck. Even if I was a true believer who thought that it was important for someone to do that, I would want out as soon as possible.
Mike Crapo, for example.
