   This character description of Willie Hershkowitz is almost identical to that of Australian Ben Zygier, hanged in Israel’s secret prison in December 2010.

   As an old friend of Willie’s, this is unreal. SOMETHING must have happened to trigger this event that is not being said. I fully understand that what he did was not proper, but it is NOTHING like him. He was one of the sweetest, most kind and giving individuals I’ve ever met. Everyone from Poughkeepsie is shocked to hear this. His family is in my prayers.

   Eilat Shooter ‘Dreamed About Murdering People

   (Israel National News) – Police have named the gunman who opened fire in an Eilat hotel, killing one person, as 23-year-old William Hershkovitz. The victim of the shooting has been identified as Armando al-Abed, a 33-year-old Arab Israeli from a Christian village in the northern Galilee region. Ynet identified the victim as Armando Abed, a 33-year-old sous chef from Mi’ilya in the Western Galilee.

   Earlier it was reported that Hershkovitz came to Israel on the Masa Israel program. He was in Eilat as a participant in the Oranim program, one of about 200 supported by Masa Israel, which is a joint project of the Israeli government and the Jewish Agency.

   Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky announced that he has appointed a committee to look into the process by which the killer was accepted to the program. Sharansky expressed deep regret for the loss of life and said that the event was an anomalous one.

   Meanwhile, Channel 10 News reported, other members of the Oranim program described Hershkovitz as an eccentric person who previously made death threats more than once.

   “A lot of people complained about him to management,” said one participant. “There was something very strange and creepy about his smile, but I never thought he could be aggressive.”

   Another member of the program who knew Hershkovitz said that he had previously made death threats towards other participants in the program. He added that “Hershkovitz would talk to himself. He used to share with us his dreams of murdering people. He also used to speak against Arabs and Nazis.”

   Interesting difference in details of version in NY Daily News:

   “A participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was afraid of repercussions from the program, said Hershkowitz had issued death threats to other members, but program coordinators ignored repeated complaints.

     “He would talk to himself, share dreams that he’d had about random killings and mutilations that he did, he would have statements against Arabs or Nazis or terrorist type movements,” the participant added.

   U.S. tourist is killed in gun battle with police after he shoots dead worker at Israel Red Sea resort hotel

   (Daily Mail) Oct. 5, 2012 – According to Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld, the man fired a number of shots at the Leonardo Club Hotel in Eilat after stealing a firearm from a security guard.

   Aviram Sela, an Israeli guest at the hotel, said he tried to wrestle the gunman to the ground before he started shooting, as terrified tourists dived for cover behind a sofa in the hotel lobby. He told Israeli television: ‘We saw him beating the guard and grab his weapon and the magazine.’ He added that the gunman then took aim at a member of his family.

   William Hershkovitz was on a Jewish work and study program and was employed at the hotel until earlier this week. He was participating in the Oranim program, which is partly-sponsored by the Israeli government.

   Ofer Gutman, head of the program, said: ‘He was a normal guy. There was nothing that indicated what would happen in the end.’ Gutman spoke by telephone before boarding a flight to Eilat, where he hoped to calm the gunman’s fellow program participants.

   German intelligence has been involved as a source of misinformation about Mossad operations and also bothered to produce misleading information about the background of Saad Al-Hilli and a link to money from Saddam Hussein. False, false, FALSE!
