Kathleen Parker actually had the following published by the Washington Post, yet, somehow, no meteorite landed on the Post‘s headquarters at 15th and L streets NW.
Phil Robertson — millionaire star of “Duck Dynasty” — seems an unlikely antagonist as 2013 wraps up. As all sentient beings know by now, he was suspended from the wildly popular A&E program for comments he made about gays during a recent GQ interview.
Suddenly our nation is consumed anew with impassioned debate about nearly every foundational principle — freedom of speech, religious freedom, civil rights and same-sex marriage.
Sometimes, the way people escape the wrath of the gods leads me to doubt the existence of the gods. If they do exist, they clearly aren’t paying much attention.
Parker has a rather peculiar notion of what constitutes “sentient beings”.
Which, considering the rest of her writing, should be expected.
Sadly, freedom/not freedom from the consequences of one’s poor choices did not make her list.
Wow one day I’m going to read that book. Violence and sex no wonder its a best seller.
I’d recommend Ezekiel – the book has been X rated for millenia, not just read into the text by moderns.
Naturally her interpretation of what the wrongdoing of Sodom was is a modern one [it dates from around the first century c.e.] – original offense, presumably, was violence and refusal of hospitality to the guests (nothing to do with sex),
My theory is that the gods do exist and are tormenting us by keeping the WaPo in business.
I’d believe it. I am so tired of having to listen to these WaPo dummies. 9/10 of the editorial dept isn’t fit to publish in a high school newspaper, and I wish Bezos would fire them. But I bet he thinks he would face too much of institutional backlash if he did (which is probably true). But I can’t imagine a man as intelligent as Bezos respects the likes of Parker, Cohen, Lane, etc. What fools, willing or not.
What would Bezos fire them? He’s a Glibertarian/GOPer.
A stupid comment made by a stupid person that misses the underlying argument (that freedom of speech doesn’t extend to the workplace relationship between management and employee, although the limits of speech can be negotiated).
I’m guessing that Robertson will survive his racist, homophobic rants because they were still advertising Duck Dynasty Chia Pets long after the scandal broke.
Just saw a tweet that A/E is ending the suspension.
I guess the “A” stands for “And we love Jim Crow!”
Proving that the true object of their worship is The Almighty Buck.
Interested in which amendment to the Constitution provides that everyone is entitled to their own TV show
That would fall under freedom of religion, since as a culture we spend an awful lot of time worshiping those graven images.
Nice call there! but is there some mandate involved in corps being required to provide said TV shows?
It’s a government mandate. They call it the “Fairness Doctrine.”
The wingnuts used to hate it, until they passed that constitutional amendment preventing it from applying to DFH’s.
ONE MORE TIME:
I don’t give a FLYING F*** what gay people do sexually; it’s none of my business.. just like what I do in my bedroom (sleep, mostly) is anyone’s business.
They should be able to marry and have the same rights as “normal” male/female couples- including, I guess the fifty percent divorce rate that “normal” couples enjoy.
the fact this more or less irrelevant issue is still a huge issue in year 2014 shows how idiotic our culture overall is.
