Michael Lazin is annoyed that four presidents gathered in Austin to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and none of them ruined the ceremony by bringing up My Lai. Contrary to Lazin’s assertion, LBJ is a liberal hero. He’s also a liberal goat. That he is both at the same time is what makes him our most interesting president.
In Brazil, where abortions are illegal, the rape exception gives women a perverse incentive to make false allegations of rape. This could catch on as a talking point among Todd Akin-types who oppose rape exceptions. But it’s actually a sick system that encourages people to lie. It’s also a demonstration that banning abortion doesn’t actually work.
The Nevada ranch stand-off with the Bureau of Land Management is getting the wingers all agitated. I hope they find a peaceful solution or we’ll never hear the end of it.
I doubt the NSA has enough credibility left to convince people that they didn’t know about the Heartbleed exploit for two years without warning anyone about it. But, they’re denying that the Bloomberg News report is true.
Over 400,000 Kentuckians now have health care that Mitch McConnell thinks they shouldn’t have. How’s that gonna play?
At Ten Miles Square, Keith Humphries continues our recent custom of Weekend Film Recommendations. This time, he’s chosen Where the Sidewalk Ends.
At College Guide, Robert Kelchen wonders whether or not college athletes should be allowed to be gainfully employed.
What’s on your mind?
The only thing that could make me doubt the official Obamacare signup numbers if it they were vouched for by the NSA.
You’re rocking WaMo. I get all proud and proprietorial when I see your name there.
I’ve never heard of Lydia Davis, and she’s apparently one of our greatest living writers.
BLM vs. Bundy – militias looking for Waco Wacko II as 68-year old rancher holds out on $1 million in back Bureau of Land Management lease payments.
Dontcha know that Western politicians think that the Bureau of Livestock and Mining shouldn’t be charging the freedom-loving Americans for the use of federal land? Or regulating what they are doing?
And according to the internets, Harry Reid is confiscating it to give it to the Chinese for a solar farm.
It’s becoming the gun-toters answer to Burning Man.
And guess who is helping out the mooching rancher? Why, the Koch affiliated groups of course!!
This is a freaking winner for the BLM, Obama administration, and Democrats in general if they get their freaking act together and use it. Easier win than the Schiavo issue that they could have scored on but were so intimidated by rightwing nuts that they chose to duck and run for cover.
The wing nuts have lined up on the side of a moocher-taker. And the GOP governor running for re-election this year has joined the nuts. A shame that it appears there isn’t a credible Democratic challenger.
Federal agency pulls back in Nevada ranch standoff, but legal fight remains
Does the BLM and Obama administration not get that these folks have no interest in resolution other than the commercial moochers taking what they want for free? That backing down now will only empower others not to pay for grazing, mining, drilling, etc. on federal lands? The takers won this round because the stupid Democrats in office didn’t present this to the general public that would have overwhelming rejected the takers. This is exactly how the oligarchs and rightwing have been winning for decades.
I saw this on the CBS Evening news, which I swear, is becoming more conservative and anti-Obama with every broadcast. Maybe because their local affiliate is the dominant TV station in the area, I’ve had years of exposure to their programming. It’s not the Dan Rather news anymore. They’re working really hard to earn their conservative bonafides.
When that piece aired this evening, I mused about the timing, if say this had happened since January 20, 2001 but before January 20, 2009, would it have even been on the news? If so, would we be hearing cries about the lack of patriotism displayed by those who traveled to demonstrate in support of this tax avoiding guy making a living off the rest of us taxpayers? Certainly, there wouldn’t be all those pseudo cowboys packing heat as was on display in the piece.
It’s about “user fees” not taxes. Not even like the user fees individuals pay to visit federal parks, but more like the fees paid by commercial operations in those parks. Like the royalties the BLM collects for oil/gas drilling on federal lands. Heh — no wonder the Kochs are in the background of this deadbeat cheater.
Boo:
What do you think of this:

Do you think it was disrespectful of Fluffyhead?
Just remember. In 1994, a private plane flew into the White House. David Gregory was then NBC’s White House correspondent covering the Clinton administration. In his coverage he mentioned how lucky the Clinton family had been. “Here is where the plane struck. Up there [points] is the family quarters.” Sorta telling folks who didn’t like Bill Clinton interrupting the permanent Bush dynasty that they needed to aim a little better next time and point out the direction and distance of their error.
I was so angry I wrote to GE’s legendary CEO Jack Welch. No answer. No change. No responsibility.
Gregory is consistent.

Did you see Jack Welch’s tweet from earlier this week? He thinks his protege, Fluffyhead, has gone soft. I found it:

I’m imagining one of those, “We’re sorry that you were offended” apologies. You know…..Republican style.
No ID? Vote absentee – and here’s a new reason.
I guess stopping for a cold one on the way to the polls might not be such a good idea with waits as long as 12 hours.

“But when LBJ then asked “Have you established any more about the visit to the Soviet Embassy in Mexico in September,” an event of no little interest to the inner circles of government, Hoover replied “No, that’s one angle that’s very confusing for this reason. We have up here the tape and the photograph of the man who was at the Soviet Embassy, using Oswald’s name. The picture and the tape do not correspond to this man’s voice, nor to his appearance. In other words, it appears that there is a second person who was at the Soviet Embassy down there.” In other words, an imposter had implicated Oswald in a relationship with Soviet agents, less than two months before the assassination.”
That was around ten a.m. on November 23, 1963.
