Another headache for Secretary Kerry as Martin Indyk attempts to get Israel and the PA to prolong talks beyond the nine month deadline of April 29. Israel’s PM Netanyahu is furious, as he had said Abbas was not a parther for peace because of the Palestinian division with Gaza. Now that a truce between Palestinian factions has been confirmed, what does the state of Israel have to say?

Israel cancels planned peace talks meeting after Fatah-Hamas unity deal announced

Bennett says Fatah became terrorist organization following reconciliation announcement; Katz claims deal a “slap in the face to Kerry.”

JERUSALEM (JPost) – Israel cancelled a planned meeting Wednesday night with Palestinian officials over extending the negotiations in an apparent response to the earlier announcement of a Fatah-Hamas reconciliation.

In recent days Justice Minister Tzipi Livni and PLO chief negotiator Saeb Erekat have met on several occasions looking for a way to extend the talks past next Tuesday’s deadline. The decision to cancel Wednesday’s meeting came after a meeting in the Prime Minister’s Office dealing with the Hamas-Fatah move, and how Israel should respond.

Israeli politicians criticized Abbas and were skeptical about the future of the negotiations following Wednesday’s announcement of the plareconciliation between Fatah and Hamas. Economy Minister Naftali Bennett said that the Palestinian Authority had turned into a terrorist organization following the Fatah-Hamas agreement.

“We don’t talk to murderers,” Bennett stated. “The agreement between Fatah, Hamas and Islamic Jihad brings the Middle East to a new diplomatic era. The Palestinian Authority turned into the largest terrorist organization in the world, 20 minutes from Tel Aviv.” According to Bennett, Israel shouldn’t negotiate with terrorists, just as the US does not talk to Hamas, Islamic Jihad or Al Qaeda.

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz said Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas’ common denominator with Hamas is hatred of Israel and the Jewish people.

Palestinians consider handing `keys’ back to Israel, ending Charade of “Peace Process”

(Informed Comment/AFP) April 20, 2014 – Palestinian negotiators have warned they may pass responsiblity for their territory back to occupying power Israel if peace talks remain stalled, a senior Palestinian official said Sunday.

The official said the Palestinians told US peace envoy Martin Indyk on Friday that unless Israel releases Palestinian prisoners as agreed and freezes settlement building, they could dismantle the Western-backed Palestinian Authority (PA) of president Mahmud Abbas.

“The Palestinians informed Indyk that if this Israeli intransigence continues, they have several options to resort to,” the Palestinian official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

“First, handing the keys of the PA to the UN so it will become in charge of the Palestinian people and the state of Palestine, which is under occupation, or that the (Israeli) occupation assumes again full responsibility for everything.”

Under the 1993 Oslo accords which were to have led to an independent Palestinian state, the Palestinians received some autonomy in managing their day-to-day affairs.

The PA is in a constant budgetary crisis and only manages to pay its civil servants and provide essential services thanks to generous funding from foreign donors.

But Israel still retains overall control of the occupied West Bank and annexed east Jerusalem while the militant Islamist Hamas threw off PA rule in the Gaza Strip in 2007 and has since run its own administration.
