This Month’s Theme: Black and White
A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.

With a Memorial Day twist.
These were all taken at The National World War Two Memorial, Bedford, Virginia.
Next Theme: (Friday, June, 6th): Tinker toys, pick-up-sticks, and false fingernails.

Very evocative photos, Bob. I particularly like the middle one — the b&w really brings out the texture of the helmut and gun.
I agree with Andi. The middle one is superb!
Thank you both, that photo was published this month on the cover of a regional veterans organization newsletter.
Andi, that last photo of the hickory is perfect. Great job!
Thanks, Sven.
That one was my favorite too. I like the way the absence of leaves makes a halo around the tree.
Love the hickory shot as well. The contrasting textures of the bark and leaves works so well in bw. Beautiful wispy clouds as well.
I agree with the others, the tree reminds me of lying under the trees when I was a kid on a lazy summer afternoon. The bark is exquisite.

Jim, love the anemone shot. Has a very nostalgic feel to it.
Lovely set — the anemone looks so delicate against the leaf. I love the hickory leaf shot against the white. Beautiful.
Nice set, the veins of anemone pop right out as if they’re trying to push out the flower.
Black and White! Bob, you rock!
I’ve really gotten into using the dynamic monochrome feature on my camera in the six months or so. Here are just a few examples. More on flickr.

You’re clearly making excellent use of that feature. I particularly like “Mannheim – River” for the perspective and the way the smoothness of the river plays against the texture of the buildings. And I apparently have thing for Mannheim because Reflection photo is my 2nd favorite.
The bookseller in Frankfurt and the reflective sphere are my favorites of a wonderful set. I like those two especially because they are so different than my approach to the b&w challenge. I took some of my simplest picture and looked at form, texture, and line. You took pictures with lots of things going on, lots of details, lots of potential distractions and used the b&w to draw my eye to the light and dark tones and focus on the essential in the photo.
Great way to describe those particular photos Jim. It really works to move the eye through the dark and light parts of the photo.
Fantastic set Sven. Hard to pick a favourite! Particularly like the Frankfurt cafe shot. Love the flowing handwriting and the light fixture (reminds me of a flower).
Great set, the reflection pieces are outstanding.
I like the flag the best. I like the way everything is in tack-sharp focus, but the out-of-focus flag shows the strong wind. Metaphorical for the country?
I liked that one best too Jim. Love the way the flag is against the glare and the sun flare.
Wonderful theme idea Bob (and next month’s whoa!).
Thanks guys, we were just about to leave the site when bam!, there it was. The credit for the theme goes to Jim. 😉
Agree with Sven — love the theme this month Bob.

I would have thought I would miss all the color in the flower photos but b&w really draws my eyes to the shapes and patterns — especially like the upper right and lower left.
agree with you, Andi, the flower shots are amazing. I usually go back to color when photographing flowers. Maybe I should try more b&w for those as well.
The flower on the lower right makes me want to see what is under each layer.
Love the birds in the trees they look like big buds ready to open up.
Framing and bokeh on the bird are perfect, great set as always.
Haven’t done anything in the b & w area lately, but here’s a set from a few years back.

Really nice set of portraits. Love Shorty’s attitude. 😉
Oh she has that in spades! She now is as tall as I am. A beautiful, bright kid.
Shorty is another shot I would never have thought of doing as b&w, but everything else is just a blur around her. I’m going to have to play more with b&w. Riverfront Valentine is beautiful.
He’s my #1 son. They’ve given us 3 grandchildren so far…
