Yeah, I really don’t understand how Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe thinks he can just blow off the General Assembly and unilaterally accept the Medicaid expansion his state is entitled to under the Affordable Care Act. He’s been making this threat from the beginning, but I have never grasped how it would work in practice.
It doesn’t seem like the governor is sure how to do it, either. Everyone is just exasperated that the Virginia GOP is being so obstinate on this point, but they do have the power to get their way.
Whatever plan that McAuliffe’s folks come up with, it’s supposed to be announced by September 1st. I suppose this is one example where the fact that Virginia’s governors cannot seek reelection is liberating. McAuliffe still needs to worry about getting impeached, but he doesn’t have any reason to particularly care what happens to his poll numbers. The people support his desire to expand Medicaid, but they may not support him acting like a king.
Should be interesting to watch what happens.
Remember that this crisis was caused by one turncoat Democrat who sold out for personal gain. Democrats have an internal corruption problem in a number of states that they have to address before they can deal with policy strategies again. New York, North Carolina, and Virginia are three that immediately come to mind.
That’s not really true. The state was headed to a government shutdown. All the turncoat did was make it possible for the GOP to pass a budget without Democratic input. And McAuliffe has a line-item veto pen, so he was willing to sign the budget after he struck out the stuff he didn’t like.
That actually makes it even sleazier for the turncoat.
Those three states aren’t the only problem. Rhode Island is another corrupt state.
Uhm . . . New Jersey anyone?
Even if he didn’t do anything ‘ illegal’, I’d make sure that his ass began paying lawyers out his ass, hauling him in for meetings with the Justice Department, forcing him to explain why it’s not illegal.
I would say the people should gather their pitchforks and storm the capital setting up guillotines.
Opps sorry: confused this story with old history lesson in France.. So carry on..8)
Pitchforks aren’t outdated yet …
Before they did that, they busted open the prisons. Think what that would mean in Texas and Louisiana.
