According to Supreme Court watchers Lee Epstein of Washington University in St. Louis and Kevin Quinn of the University of California-Berkeley, Sonia Sotomayor now ranks as the most liberal Justice, taking over that role from Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Elena Kagan ranks as more conservative than Ginsburg but more liberal than Breyer.
Thanks, Obama.
Yes, she’s assumed John Paul Stevens’ mantle, in every way. She will become one of the more notable and distinguished SC Justices.
(Yes, I know she replaced Souter and not Stevens. Which did give her a few months to work with the man who remained at the peak of his powers.)
Great news from today’s decisions involving Texas abortion access and State University affirmative action admission practices.
I’d love to see Garland rescind the nomination so that Clinton and Sanders could work together on nominating a young, progressive judge to replace Scalia.
Republicans play to win. It’s time Democrats started nominating justices in their late 40s and early 50s.
I fail to see how she has taken Ginsberg’s mantle as the most liberal when she is judge more conservative than her. Please explain.
Stevens was more liberal than Ginsberg. Sotomayor is crafting opinions that read more like Stevens, in citations, reasoning, and writing style. Ginsberg and Sotomayor get to the same place in their rulings, but often by different routes. Ginsberg is brilliant. However, there’s a contemporary aspect to Sotomayor’s opinions that is refreshing and straightforward.
listening to Elizabeth Warren (the extended version on Ari Melber) …
There are many persuasive arguments for various alternatives to Warren for VP, but , no pun intended, Warren is truly the trump card if Trump is really going to be the GOP nominee. She neuters his working class appeal in a way that should keep him below 40%.
The best thing is, she can keep on doing what she’s doing without having to be the veep candidate. Put someone younger in that slot who can plausibly run for President down the road, and keep Warren in the Senate. Win-win!
Senate Majority Leader Elizabeth Warren.
I know it’s unlikely, but I just like to say (write) it.
Senate Majority Leader Elizabeth Warren.
I thought it obvious very early Sotomayor would be great. She’s the deepest thinker we’ve had in a while, questioning things like corporate personhood and how law has to respond to an unfair society, as in discrimination. She’s also onto Roberts, who has a sly way of inserting nasty precedents and principles even as he makes a good ruling on the particular case in hand.
Thanks, Justice Sotomeyer.
(And thanks, Justice Notorious RBG.)
