   From a radio interview, it’s possible there was no political motive. It appears the individual was distraught because of personal setbacks and the attack may be a suicide.    Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel has been named by local media as the terrorist who used a lorry to mow down a crowd in Nice.

   Here’s what we know about his background and possible motive for murdering at least 84 people:

   • He is a 31-year-old French citizen born in Tunisia
   • Bouhlel is believed to have worked as a local delivery driver
   • One report claimed he was married with three children
   • He was known to authorities as a petty criminal
   • Tunisian security sources said he was from the town of Msaken, which he last visited four years ago
   • Eyewitnesses said he swerved from side to side to kill as many as possible
   • He was shot dead by police
   • Guns and grenades were found in his lorry
   • Police are now searching his home
   • Authorities have urged caution on linking Bouhlel to so-called Islamic State
   • His identity was later confirmed by his fingerprints.

   Forensic experts searched the flat where Bouhlel had lived, located in a four-storey block in the Abattoirs, a working class neighbourhood of Nice not far from the train station.

   French court refuses to release woman pardoned for killing her abusive husband

   A French court has refused to release a woman pardoned for killing her abusive husband, prompting an outcry over a case that has become a cause célèbre.

   Jacqueline Sauvage received a pardon from president François Hollande in January for the 2012 killing of her husband Norbert Marot, a violent alcoholic who she said raped her and her daughters.

   She was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2014 for the murder of her husband who she shot three times in the back a day after their son hanged himself.

   of self-defence to be expanded in cases of “female victims of violence”.

   On Friday, Sauvage’s lawyers Nathalie Tomasini and Janine Bonaggiunta declared themselves “in shock” after a court in Melun, south of Paris, refused to grant her conditional bail.

   At a news conference, they accused magistrates of refusing to release Sauvage because “the presidential pardon was highly resented by the whole profession”. In its ruling the court referenced the “extensive media coverage” of the case in its decision.

   The prosecution service, which backed the release of Sauvage, will appeal the court’s decision, Melun prosecutor Beatrice Angelelli told AFP.
