The story is still early, with hints of bagmen and ties to foreign intelligence services (using agents of influence). Certainly the softening changes in the GOP platform as to Ukraine and Russian occupation of territory while Manifort was campaign head makes more sense.
However, what caught my eye…and what confirms an element of Sander’s campaign arguement… is the fact that Manafort and company paid both a Republcian lobbying group headed by former rising GOP star Vin Webber and a Democratic lobbying group headed by the brother of former Clinton Admin official and current HRC campaign chair John Podesta. The two firms split the money and co-ordinated lawyers to avoid reporting their activity to the Justice Dept under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
——excerpt——–
“That lobbying included downplaying the necessity of a congressional resolution meant to pressure the Ukrainian leader to release an imprisoned political rival….
One former Podesta employee, speaking on condition of anonymity because of a non-disclosure agreement, said Gates described the nonprofit’s role in an April, 2012 meeting as supplying a source of money that could not be traced to the Ukrainian politicians who were paying him and Manafort.
In separate interviews, three current and former Podesta employees said disagreements broke out within the firm over the arrangement, which at least one former employee considered obviously illegal. Podesta, who said the project was vetted by his firm’s counsel, said he was unaware of any such disagreements.
A legal opinion drafted for the project for Mercury in May 2012, and obtained by AP, concluded that the European Centre qualified as a “foreign principal” under the Foreign Agents Registration Act but said disclosure to the Justice Department was not required. That determination was based on the nonprofit’s assurances that none of its activities was directly or indirectly supervised, directed, controlled, financed or subsidized by Ukraine’s government or any of the country’s political parties.
The Podesta Group’s CEO, Kimberley Fritts, said the two lobbying firms had coordinated on the legal conclusion that disclosure was not necessary to the Justice Department…..”
Wonderful.
In a story about Manafort and Gate’s emails-
——-excerpt————
“The emails show Gates personally directed two Washington lobbying firms, Mercury LLC and the Podesta Group Inc., between 2012 and 2014 to set up meetings between a top Ukrainian official and senators and congressmen on influential committees involving Ukrainian interests. Gates noted in the emails that the official, Ukraine’s foreign minister, did not want to use his own embassy in the United States to help coordinate the visits.”
So, a sleazy DC consulting firm takes money from a questionable foreign govt with ties to the Putin Regime and spreads it around to well connnected Republican lobbiests and the family of HRC’s campaign chair. And those two firms conspire to wiggle out of reporting their efforts to the Justice Dept. And you know there is absolutely NO influence or consideration being given for their efforts by the campaigns for President.
That is the backgroud of the efforts of just one foreign govt in Washington. Lord knows what is happening with other govts, corperations, trade groups, etc…
Which was one of Sen. Sander’s arguements which resonated and was one of Trump’s arguements that did so well. Manafort is gone from Trump campaign. Maybe Podesta should go as well? If not, then confirms the “Crooked Hillary” charge and allows Trump to proclaim his own integrity.

Sorry you didn’t find my diary on this topic from Wednesday worthy.
Its not that I ignored your post, its just that this common tale of influence peddling has some extras: the hiding of activities from Justice Dept adds a certain spice to the broth.
Manafort is a scummy fixer so its no surprise that he popped up on Trump’s campaign. However, the revelation that Ukrainian/Russian money was directly spread around to both Republican and Democratic firms to achieve Russia’s goals and the firms conspired to hide their activities from the Justice Dept is new. If it was corruption in an open and honest way, then we couldn’t complain too much. But taking money and hiding what and why… its too much and allows questions about where one’s loyalties lie.
And when you use your position to alter the political platform of a national political party or influence the positions of a candidate, then its too much.
But what is also too much is receiving a judiciary benefit from foreign money hidden from the Justice Dept.
John Podesta’s wiki bio reads like a normal DC lawyer insider. Georgetown law, then counsel for various Congressional Committees including Judiciary. Forms the Podesta lobbying firm with brother to peddle his contacts and then gets in with the Clinton Admin (they needed a Congressional insider plus Podesta’s firm had WalMart as a client <at the time or later?>). Then forms a liberal Think Tank and on various boards. Becomes HRC campaign chair when it gets serious.
So, he is a Clinton old hand. Big deal.
Right. But I couldn’t find what his relationship with current Podesta Group is. Certain playing both sides of the river by Manafort and Gates is common for PR firms in DC, especially for foreign clients. So, current Podesta Group is just as sleazy in taking money then trying to hide its source from DoJ as required by law. Does John Podesta still have a financial stake in Podesta Group and as such did he profit personally from the Ukrainian/Putin money by its concealment?
If so, then he (like Manafort) has to go or the issue will become a target and confirmation of the general character of HRC organizations; right when such characterizations are not needed.

I guess the kitchen is getting a little hot.

On Friday, both lobbying firms hired outside legal counsel to investigate.
The Podesta Group’s chief executive, Kimberley Fritts, said the firm had retained Caplin & Drysdale LLP to determine whether it had been misled and threatened possible legal action against the European Centre. Fritts noted that the nonprofit had formally attested to being independent, leading her firm to conclude that it was not working on behalf of a foreign government.
The attorney handling Mercury LLC’ss review — Ken Gross of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom– was the same one who drafted a legal memo in 2012 that Mercury had used to justify not notifying the Justice Department about its work under the U.S. Foreign Agent Registration Act. Gross confirmed to the AP that he had been hired by Mercury.

What’s new? Rewriting history: West is good, East is bad? So Manafort provided lobby services contrary to US interests to overthrow a foreign, democratically elected government. See McCain & Co in support of the right-wing rebels of Ukraine during the Maidan protests as he supported previous Ukrainian president’s candidate Yushchenko and Orange Revolution and Georgia’s Saakashvili in the Rose Revolution. Opposing USAID/CIA/NED is a crime? Btw Tymoshenko partnered with Yushchenko in 2004 before falling out with him in a leadership battle. This division led to the election of Yanukovych as president in 2010.
In northern Syria McCain threw his support behind rebels linked to Al Nusra and Al Qaeda in US effort to overthrow the Assad regime. We see daily how succesful US intervention has been in Iraq, Libya and Syria.
“And Gates directed efforts to undercut sympathy for Yulia Tymoshenko, an imprisoned rival of then-President
Viktor Yanukovych. The Ukrainian leader eventually fled the country in February 2014 during a popular revolt
prompted in part by his government’s crackdown on protesters and close ties to Russia.”

I think we can safely say that Syria conflict is a proxy war just like the good old days between Russia and west.
The why is another matter.
Russia was coming along until Czar Vlad got into power and will not let go. To stay there, he has had to open the money spigot for his friends and supporters. To keep the prols distracted from the massive looting of their country looks outward and encourages the “Greater Russia” theme. Sub and Air incursions in the Baltic and Scandinavian countries. Regaining a Black Sea port, after stopping all that Ukraine/Nato talk. Rattling sabers over Poland military exercises, etc…
In response to or because of, US pressure on Russia by pushing down oil prices. Added benefit of halving Iranian economy to get them to the table for nuclear talks. To get this to work, need OPEC onboard and the Saudis were eager. Pump like crazy, but their goal, besides Iran is the US oil fields in Dakotas and OK. Drive the prices down so low as to cripple Russian economy, seriously damage Iranian, and drive oil producers and service companies in the new US oil fields out of business. Then swoop in and buy leases and companies for pennies on the dollar; all on the sly.
But such actions have consequences with Russia and Iran working together. Iran stirring the pot in Yeman and the other Gulf Emirates and forcing Saudis to defend their border and the House of Saud. Russia defending their thug in Syria, who was hailed as a reformer when his Dad died. Attacking the US/Nato proxy fighters with bombing runs from Iran. And it appears they are there to stay, at least for a while. Then putting pressure on the always controversial US political season; just to add another piece of chaos.
All in all, the usual Cold War chess game, with Vladimir as a new, interesting player. Playing for gold instead of ideology.

Well, we might manage to have an unpolluted aquifer in the continental US if SA manages to shut down fracking.
Sad when we have to depend on the actions of Republicans to save SocSec. and Saudis to save our water resources.
And kick us over to solar/wind, FINALLY.
But first we have to repeal the recent crude oil export enabling law.

○ Turkey would lend support to the Syrian opposition for its move to capture Jarablus | Hürriyet Daily News |
Read well, the so-called Syrian opposition have regrouped on the Turkish side of the border and are ready to attack the Syrian city of Jarablus … to open a supply route for rebels towards IS held territory under attack by US allied YPG Kurds.
According to Reuters, the forces are made up of Failaq al-Sham, Sultan Murad, Ahrar al-Sham and Jabha al-Shamiya units. The assault is expected to begin over the next few days, before the SDF can retake the ISIL-held town.
○ Syria – The U.S. Creates More Chaos While The Grown-Ups Talk Resolution
I’m afraid your timeline and sequence of events are a bit off the mark as a result of Western propaganda in the media. “Stirring the pot” was U.S. President George Bush in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq and the policy of regime change by Barack Obama / Hillary Clinton in Libya and Syria in 2011.
“Sub and Air incursions in the Baltic and Scandinavian countries” is pure nonsense and NATO warmongering … read policy of the Atlantic Council v. Russia and Putin. The “sub” invading Sweden’s waters was never found nor at all likely the event took place.
Russia never did not have the naval base, the issue was terms of long term lease renewal in the future – fact free does not advance the possibility of diplomatic solutions [neither does your snide version of events]
