And whatever we do, let us never forget what has happened not only during the last eight or so years, but the organizations (media and otherwise) who cultivated the very fear and loathing that is now clearly ascendant:
I listened as they called my President a Muslim.
I listened as they called him and his family a pack of monkeys.
I listened as they said he wasn’t born here.
I watched as they blocked every single path to progress that they could.
I saw the pictures of him as Hitler.
I watched them shut down the government and hurt the entire nation twice.
I watched them turn their backs on every opportunity to open worthwhile dialog.
I watched them say that they would not even listen to any choice for Supreme Court no matter who the nominee was.
I listened as they openly said that they will oppose him at every turn.
I watched as they did just that.
I listened.
I watched.
I paid attention.
Now, I’m being called on to be tolerant.
To move forward.
To denounce protesters.
To “Get over it.”
To accept this…
I will not.
I will do my part to make sure this great American mistake becomes the embarrassing footnote of our history that it deserves to be.
I will do this as quickly as possible every chance I get.
I will do my part to limit the damage that this man can do to my country.
I will watch his every move and point out every single mistake and misdeed in a loud and proud voice.
I will let you know in a loud voice every time this man backs away from a promise he made to them.
Them. The people who voted for him.
The ones who sold their souls and prayed for him to win.
I will do this so that they never forget.
And they will hear me.
They will see it in my eyes when I look at them.
They will hear it in my voice when I talk to them.
They will know that I know who they are.
They will know that I know what they are.
Do not call for my tolerance. I’ve tolerated all I can.
Now it’s their turn to tolerate ridicule.
Be aware, make no mistake about it, every single thing that goes wrong in our country from this day
forward is now Trump’s fault just as much as they thought it was Obama’s.
I find it unreasonable for them to expect from me what they were entirely unwilling to give.”
Author unknown.
If you got ’em of course.
Identity politics does not win elections, and identity politics is the sole content of this diary.
If the Democratic party does not return to being the party of the people as opposed to being the sole remaining party of neoliberalism and neoconservatism – with the trick of adding identity politics to the mix to make it attractive to the masses – it will disappear entirely, to be replaced by another second party, perhaps the Green Party.
On the contrary, the content of this diary is to stand up and be a decent human being. A politics of hatred toward people based on race or ethnicity, religion, and so on is one I will have no part of. A politics that recognizes economic oppression and oppression of stigmatized groups go hand in hand is one I can get behind. Simple as that. And I will continue to advocate accordingly for as long as I can draw a breath. So it goes.
Speaking of human decency…
Does Clinton’s Defeat Mean the Decline of US Interventionism?
Progressives bashing Trump after he won the election is nothing but Northerners basking in privilege.
I doubt Trump is going to be particularly friendly to those in the Global South. Try again.
When did Kosov become part of the Global South?
Is Climate Change aware that Trump is now President-Elect?
Trump will sign off on when ever Gen. Flynn and Putin want to get involved an area in order to push back on Muslims.
Kosovo was a casualty of the Yugoslav War which erupted under George H.W. Bush, not sure how the First Lady gets all the blame. I have heard Muslims, Albanians, Macedonians, and Serbs complain about US actions during that time that the US was favoring their mortal enemies. It was a mess created by the hubris of the Victor’s Peace of 1919. Sure the US could have made different decisions that might have led to a better outcome, but it was a mess for years until it spilled into Kosovo.
Iraq was George W. Bush’s baby. Reagan was the grandfather.
Libya was likely going to be a disaster one way or the other, and Europe was backing the rebels by the time the U.S decided on siding with them.
Syria is a quagmire. I am not convinced al-Assad’s forces were behind the chemical weapons. Which of the five major factions would you side with when the US screwed the pooch in your version of events? In addition, the drought mostly like exacerbated by Climate Change precipitated the Civil War.
It just gets tiring reading all these Trump is a pacifist and Clinton made the world a hell hole click bait columns. It is like colonialism and everything else that happened the last century had no impact until HRC ambled out of Little Rock to make the world burn.
Excellent article – thx!
In the article, South as in Third World nations. Just to be clear.
Intervention/regime change by R2P cover is totally against International law. A professor of the U.S. Constitution knows the law.
R2P intervention as seen in Kosovo under WJC and the rest by R2P advocates HRC with Susan Rice and Samanthe Power.
UN Security Council members and global powers China and Russia were opposed to outside intervention.
The pathetic trio: nalbar, Beahmont and marduk account for 90% of trolling behavior at the pond.
BooMan’s quote: STFU! Pls heed his advice.
I thought you had given up on the high road Oui, and instead had lowered yourself to the trolls level.
Have you changed again? Hard to tell sometime. What do you tell yourself?
I will never be silenced … these assholes should heed BooMan’s advice of days ago and stop trolling the Pond!
The days of dKos trolling police have never been accepted here at the Pond.
Wait what? You wont be silent, “they” should be silent?
Somehow i dont see you being less of a troll lately than anyone else you may have problems with.
Wasnt Boomans advice also directed to you?
I dont mind shitty behavior, its clearly the time for that. And the tribalism is expected too. And the childish behavior, and everything.
The hypocrisy though, whether its out of butthurt, or cynical calculation is getting annoying. Oh wait, its been fucking annoying for months.
Is it really your place to call others you disagree with trolls? It seems to me that you are hardly innocent of that.
You do realize that STFU was directed at you as well. In fact it was in response to the diary you wrote. Given that it seems that you too should heed his advice.
The timeline of comments and downratings by the trolls is quite clear.
I took BooMan’s advice and quit the nonsense … the following day nalbar & company continued their trolling.
I sent an email to Martin I would reply in kind. I’m keeping it by posts, without downrating commments as the trio continues to do. 🙂
What in heaven’s sake are you talking about? Trump just won while running the most extreme identity politics campaign imaginable.
Rejecting political correctness is not a form of identity politics. Aside from rejecting political correctness, Trump also ran on the rejection of globalism (neoliberalism + multiculturalism).
White identity politics. The so-called alt-right (we really should just call them what the are: white supremacists) were center stage in Trump’s campaign. It may be an identity politics of a different flavor, but an identity politics all the same. Let us not fool ourselves into believing different. Nor should we allow others to attempt to hoodwink into believing otherwise.
White supremacy is quite a bit more than “rejecting political correctness”.
A Presidential campaign which successfully agitates and mobilizes white supremacists is the very definition of identity politics.
It’s also exceedingly irresponsible and dangerous.
