Midweek Cafe and Lounge Vol. 14

Better late midweek than never. This week: covers of Velvet Underground songs.

That was Cat Power’s cover of I Found a Reason. The song appeared on the soundtrack of the film V for Vendetta about a decade ago. Something about her stark interpretation that really speaks to me.

This used to get a lot of play on the jukebox at my favorite pub back around the end of the 1980s. The version of Sweet Jane that most folks are familiar with is very uptempo. But VU did a version (usually live, from what I understand) more like the one featured in the above Cowboy Junkies video.

Finally, let’s round things off with something from the Paisley Underground era.

That’s Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles fame on vocals. This cover of I’ll Be Your Mirror was on an album called Rainy Day that featured a sort of who’s who of the Paisley Underground movement in SoCal as well as in the Sacramento area of northern California. We’ll just say I heard a few tidbits thanks to college radio at the time.

Enjoy. See you next week (or the week after) with some more tunes for you.
