In his Hail Mary bid to tip the election to Trump, the Republican private equity executive enlisted two controversial alt-right activists to help him understand the workings of the internet and make contacts in Trump’s orbit, according to interviews with those involved and emails obtained by Politico.
The activists, the journalist-turned-entrepreneur Charles C. Johnson and his former business partner Pax Dickinson, agreed to help Smith’s quixotic mission, which failed to track down copies of Clinton’s emails. Johnson is a polarizing figure who was banned from Twitter in 2015 after promoting an effort to “take out” a Black Lives Matter activist but maintains ties to White House officials. Smith also reached out to “Guccifer 2.0” –an alias the U.S. intelligence community has linked to Russian state hackers–and was advised to seek the help of a white nationalist hacker who lives in Ukraine.
The new details of Smith’s operation, which were shared with Politico Magazine by Johnson and others, paint a picture of a determined but ill-equipped activist casting about far and wide in a frantic but ultimately futile quest to get ahold of Clinton’s deleted emails and publish them ahead of Election Day. As the ailing octogenarian was dealing with sophisticated hackers and navigating the darkest corners of the internet, for instance, he was being tutored in the use of basic computer technology.

Ironically, some of Smith’s emails related to the speaker’s race were released in a dump by D.C. Leaks, an outlet that, according to cybersecurity experts, was established to publish emails stolen by Russian hackers. In one leaked email from October 8, 2015, Smith wrote to Illinois’ Republican National Committeeman Rich Porter that he had just discussed the speaker’s race with Breitbart reporter Matt Boyle, now the outlet’s Washington bureau chief.
In another leaked email, Smith forwarded a link to a story from GotNews, a website founded by Johnson, accusing McCarthy of carrying on an affair with North Carolina Rep. Renee Ellmers. The leak also includes an email in which Johnson provided Smith with Boyle’s contact information. Boyle and others at Breitbart aggressively covered the alleged affair, and McCarthy withdrew from the speaker’s race.

Johnson said he also suggested that Smith get in touch with Andrew Auernheimer, a hacker who goes by the alias ‘Weev’ and has collaborated with Johnson in the past. Auernheimer–who was released from federal prison in 2014 after having a conviction for fraud and hacking offenses vacated [on appeal – May 2014] and subsequently moved to Ukraine.

I am a political analyst for a living. I spent the last year making large amounts of money betting on the success of Donald Trump. The writing was on the wall for anyone who understood the American people. I kept telling people here we were electing Trump and I was laughed at. Your media insulted Trump and praised Hillary Clinton. Your leaders attacked Trump in vile and cowardly ways. Your ambassador insulted Trump in public.
I love my President as much as I love Ukraine. This presents a problem. My President hates your President. Your leaders have made grave mistakes. Just as I warned your country and its media about the impending election of Donald Trump, I will now warn it once more. I worry that war will come. I love my city and will not leave it. I want this place to succeed, and it will need America’s help to do so.
When your leaders allied themselves with Hillary Clinton, they made themselves part of a coalition of the worst people in America. The kind of people that voted for Hillary Clinton were chiefly homosexuals, childless insane women, drug dealers, pimps, and niggers who wanted free money from our government so they did not have to get a job. The image of Ukraine’s leaders to any red blooded American now is now tainted with the association of Hillary’s sick and degenerate voter base. My American friends talk of Ukraine with contempt in their voice. They only know the men in Kiev who attacked their beloved leader, men they know to be a part of Clinton’s international network of corruption.
Donald Trump has done more in his first ten days than any American president has in history. He moves fast, like the lightning. Ukraine will have to move fast as well to salvage their relationship with America. There are three simple steps to doing so:
- Poroshenko should realize the gravity of what he has done and step down for the good of his country. Trump will hold a grudge against Poroshenko forever, and seek to undermine any government that includes him and his allies. The Kiev junta is over and Ukraine’s only future with America lies in men who have not insulted my President.
- Trump admires strength and independence– nationalist militants should fill the ranks of power. Trump is a nationalist and strongly supported Brexit. Trump and his people like independent European nation states and oppose globalism. If you put Pravy Sektor men in power, it will give an image appealing to Western nationalists.
- Develop support amongst the alternative right. Trump’s first political support base was far right Internet commentators and reactionary labor movements. It remains his core political base. Oleksandr Muzychko was the only Ukrainian appreciated by the alt-right and he was murdered. Most in the alt-right think he was silenced for his vocal opposition to so many Jews seizing power in Ukraine. Trump’s political base wants to see the kind of spirited resistance to Jewish Communists that Muzychko displayed. Ukraine needs to find more men like him and make sure they adequately communicate their ideals to both Ukrainian and American audiences.
The clock is ticking. Ukrainian leaders stand idle, waiting to see what changes. Ukraine suffers an ill fate because its leaders backed the wrong horse. Ukraine still may change course, but the shadow of Moscow grows longer every hour. Inaction will lead to ruin.
As I have stated before, the Alt-right is pro-Ukraine and anti-Russia … allied with NATO aggression! It’s presence in Russia is a fringe movement tolerated by the extremists in politics serving self-interest.

To see how much tension there is between the vessel Bannon is exploiting and the substantive ends Bannon states he hopes to achieve, consider Bannon’s foreign policy views, recalling that he was shaped by the Navy and a masters at Georgetown, an institution with deep ties to the Washington national security establishment.
Here he is speaking in 2014 about Russia’s aggression toward the Ukraine–Bannon felt that President Obama wasn’t doing enough to counter the rival power:
The Russians are very serious about this. They’re not going to let Ukraine fall into the sphere of the United States and the European Union without a fight. And we’re going to see in a couple weeks what they’re prepared to do about it and what we’re prepared to do. And I think it’s very scary, whether you’re a liberal Democrat or a right-win Republican, the president has not comported himself with the gravitas you need when you’re up against really tough hombres like Vladamir Putin and his guys. I think it’s going to get a lot more serious before it gets better.
This seems to be an earnest expression of alarm at an American president who, in Bannon’s eyes, possesses neither the knowledge nor the inclination to aggressively counter Russia. Bannon felt an assertion of American strength was geopolitically important.
