Yesterday, as I was looking over the cornucopia of bad news options for topics to write about I had a fleeting moment of recognition, tinged with a feeling of regret, that the amazingly long and surprising strong influence of Stoneman Douglas High School shooting survivors had at some recent point finally come to an end. I tried to console myself that they’d had some limited legislative successes and created a momentum all its own, not dependent on constant refueling from a ghoulish press. Organizations had sprung up and leaders had emerged, and so below the surface of daily national attention, the Parkland survivors had and would continue to make a difference.
That was my happy thought. Yet, my darker side wondered if the survivors had failed almost as thoroughly as every other group that has suffered senseless loss of life at the hands of a well-armed gunman. More stunning than the Parkland kids’ successes was the seeming silence and impotence of the survivors of the far more deadly Route 91 Harvest music festival shooting in Las Vegas. That Congress had done nothing in the face of a tragedy that cost fifty-eight people their lives and in which another four hundred and twenty-two people were shot was telling about how much power the National Rifle Association has over Republican lawmakers.
My final thought on this topic yesterday before my mind moved in another direction was that it would not be long before there was another mass casualty gun incident, and that would become a test for whether or not the Parkland kids had fundamentally changed anything. Unfortunately, I was right about that.
At least eight people died Friday morning in gunfire at Santa Fe High school, law enforcement officials confirmed, while at least 12 others were injured, according to area hospitals.
Police arrested a suspect and detained a second person, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said via Twitter.
The bloodshed 30 miles south of Houston is the worst mass shooting in America since February, when 17 people were gunned down at a high school in Parkland, Florida, according to a database of shootings maintained by the Washington Post.
We’ll be told not to politicize this and hear all the familiar excuses for not doing anything in response, but the survivors have a new template now for how to conduct and organize themselves. Sadly, they will now be thrust into the media glare and have an opportunity to have their say.
‘Worst mass shooting since February.” That’s two months ago. Is that supposed to be a good thing?
. . . months, now. No, not a good thing. A horrific indicator that something is terribly wrong in/with this country.
And supposedly there was an armed LEO there who is now in the hospital with gun shot wounds
So there goes that excuse
The LEO probably didn’t have enough firepower. Next step, NRA recommends automatic weapons for all school resource officers. Can never be too careful, right? Good guys with bigger guns?
“New & improved” NRA slogan?
The battle lines are long drawn, the trenches well established. Those citizens not functionally retarded (80%?) know that the Dem party would pass gun control legislation, and the NRA party will not, under any circumstances, because Freedum. The hapless troops have trench foot. It’s just a paralyzed quagmire at this point in the Second Amendment War, which means victory for the NRA. Decades of mass shootings mean nothing, result in nothing (effectively). Over the top, kids!
The useless corporate media refuses to report on this issue in partisan terms, thus hiding the ball for the appalling Repub party. But, to be fair, it doesn’t take too much in the way of smarts to figure this one out.
As a result of the incompetent white electorate, the nation has descended into barbarism, and no sensible foreign traveler should disembark for any reason onto the streets of FailedNation, Inc. We are not a civilized people.
Some will say yet another devastating school shooting is evidence of the failure and futility of the Parklands kids efforts. There will be those on the right who’ll point to this and say “see, we told you there’s nothing you can do,” and “the kids” need to “know their place,” stop disrespecting us adults and SFTU.
But this would be another version of the same faulty logic the right uses to shut down reasonable solutions on gun violence, implying that if an approach is not absolute and perfect in that it stops every last intentional death, let alone shooting deaths, then it is a failure and we may as well go back to doing nothing because nothing can be done.
This is a tragedy to be sure, and I hope this does not take the wind out of the sails of the movement, and its leaders do not get suckered by what I’ve described that’s sure to come.
And by the way, the Parkland students have not gone anywhere. They’re reacting to the current shooting:

or-the-nra-to-attack-the-survivors/
. . . (over?)statement
Good to see this evidence that that’s not quite true. Even better to see them get out in front of the narrative(s) that are already ramping up.
Thanks for that link
Nothing much has changed at this point, but as has been pointed out, the Parkland High School Students are still active. It’s just that the media is mostly choosing to ignore them, as in: sweeping their actions under the carpet in order to make it seem as if they had “no impact” and that there’s really “nothing they can do.” blah blah…
My expectation is the Parkland teens will step up in response to this tragedy and hopefully coordinate efforts with teens at this high school in Texas.
It’s horrible. Yeah, let’s celebrate! It’s been two whole months that students weren’t slaughtered in their school! Yay. Woot! Except I think that there have been some other acts of violence in schools during that 2 month period.
It’s really beyond the pale what US teens are supposed to “put up with” and then just STFU.
Horrifying.
Now is the time for thoughts and prayers, you know. Lots of them.
Have a blessed day, Jonf.
I guess the gambit this time is to blame violent video games because, ya know, absolutely no other country on the planet has citizens playing violent video games. Just here.
It’s true. Just ask Rush or Fox or Breitbart….
Anyway, if only everyone at the school had been armed to the teeth, this woulda never happened.
Thoughts ‘n prayers! Cawk! Thoughts ‘n prayers.
Apparently the Parkland kids have added to their toolbox the movement to push states, towns & cities to locally change their laws and rules.
Added to that is a push to get cities to file lawsuits against the NRA to inundate the NRA with so many suits that they’ll be forced to defend on all fronts.
It’s obvious that on a national level there’s simply no interest on Ryan & McConnell’s part to take gun control anywhere, so hopefully when the grassroots of the communities that are actually living through these nightmares takes hold Congress will have to fall in line.
Ever hopeful.
Has anything changed?
Short…and obvious…answer?
No.
How could this rapidly mounting, natively-produced epidemic of social terrorism be “changed?”
Stopped in its tracks!!!
Collect all of the guns in the U.S.?
Please!!!
House to house, door to door?
Ain’t gonna happen.
Most rural and minority-dominated city areas would rapidly begin to look like the second coming of Fallujah. Bet on it.
And if it by some miracle it did work?
Then what?
Get rid of all the knives as well?
How about bomb ingredients?
Gasoline, bottles, matches and rags for Molotov cocktails?
Get real.
Barring a…so-far-not-very-likely…sea change in the way one or both of the the dominant political parties are financed?
It’s not going to happen.
Profit is becoming more and more centered in a small minority while:
1-World overpopulation continues to incease.
2-Cimate change renders more and more areas essentially uninhabitable.
and
3-Human workers are being rendered less and less necessary by the rapid, geometric progression of robotics.
The end result is a progressive lessening of the rights to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” that the founders of the U.S. wrote…no matter how cynically and/or blindly they may have done so…into the Declaration of Independence. This goes for all people across all national boundaries.
As the worker human becomes less and less important to the production of profit, the major beneficiaries of that profit become less and less interested in sustaining the lives of those often pesky workers. And there we jolly well are, aren’t we.
Global warming?
Rapidly indreasing pollution all over the world?
Constant war?
Total surveillance?
Medical, pharmaceutical and health insurance incompetence and/or total criminality?
The almost total poisoning of the food chain?
It almost sounds like a hostile takeover plot devised by aliens, doesn’t it?
At the very least, by human beings who are themselves totally “alien” to human needs and suffering, right on up to the current “Top of the world, Ma!!!” U.S. President/Motherfucker/Whoremaster, Donald Trump.
It makes Hitler’s Final Solution look like a minor gang war in a relatively small neighborhood.
Is it “conscious?”
I dunno.
I can see it, so I have to presume that at least some of the people in positions of power can see it as well. The “smart” ones at the very least, people like Dick Cheney and Henry Kissinger, people like Eric Prince, Steve Bannon and Roger Stone.
And the beat goes on.
The beat down.
Will anything in this system change?
Yes, I believe that it will.
In time to save humanity and so-called “civilization?”
Dunno about that.
Sorry.
Way above my pay grade.
In all of human history, when any beatdown on this level reached critical mass…just in the last few hundred years, look at the French Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the collapse and destruction of the Third Reich and the precipitous falls of so many lower-level, tinhorn dictators…in all of human history (just as in a nuclear reaction), when critical mass in terms of human meanness has been reached there has been a terrible explosion.
What’s different now?
The massively destructive human meanness is no longer confined to one local time bomb waiting to go off.
It is now worldwide.
This time, it’s going to be really big.
Unless, of course, we humans manage to disarm it.
So far?
I don’t see that happening.
I hope I’m wrong.
First we need to wake the fuck up to what is really going on. I don’t see that happening either; I just see shortsighted rival gangs competing for position and power.
Like the RatPublicans and the DemocRats.
So it continues to go.
Let us pray it doesn’t go too far.
I am.
Later…
