        I’m reminded of when I learned that immigrant children were being detained, separately from their parents. I started reading blogs & news obssessively, as if somehow, by reading them and seeing no news of the inevitable abuse & sex crimes, I could prevent the crimes from happening. The moral foreboding is like a kind of creeping stain on our souls.
        
        And yeah, actually reading those texts would have just pushed the stain a little deeper. It’s still useful to know what a creep that man is. But also good to not have to read it myself.

Manafort is one sick dude. All the money in the world can’t make life satisfying for someone so depraved. Nor can all the sex in the world. Ultimately, one must live with himself. Those who have become so cynical they’ve lost any semblance of conscience are, in my experience, miserable people who have all but given up on life. Their private jets and other luxuries are the booby prize in life after one has surrendered any hope of real human connection.
