Jerome Corsi is largely responsible for the two most egregious Republican attacks of the last fifteen years: the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth’s assault on John Kerry’s distinguished military record and the birther conspiracy theory launched against Barack Obama. As a result, there are few people less sympathetic than Mr. Corsi. It seems like a kind of justice that he’s now in negotiations with Robert Mueller, reportedly to plead guilty to unspecified crimes in return for leniency.
Corsi’s name emerged rather recently in the context of the Russian investigation. It wasn’t until September 2018 that we learned that he’d been subpoenaed and agreed to turn over his computer and phone. Since then, NBC News has reported that the Special Counsel’s office has “obtained communications suggesting that Corsi was aware in advance that emails from former Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta had been stolen and handed to WikiLeaks.”
Nothing Corsi says can be taken at face value, but by his telling, Mueller’s interrogators found his explanations “preposterous.” Corsi has also said that he fears he will spend the rest of his life in prison. He’s only 72 years old and in seemingly good health, so he must be thinking that he’ll get more than a perjury charge.
It’s clear that Corsi was in communication with Roger Stone in the critical August 2016 time period, both before and after Stone announced on Twitter: “It will soon [be John] Podesta’s time in the barrel.” Stone has testified that he was relying on information provided to him by Corsi, although both of them have tried to muddy the waters about how they came to that conclusion. At the time, no one knew that Podesta’s email account had been hacked, and WikiLeaks didn’t release the contents of his emails until early October.
What we know for certain is actually pretty limited at this point. Corsi initially said that negotiations with Mueller had broken down and he expected to be indicted, but now the word is that the negotiations over a plea are back on track.
Obviously, he could agree to plea guilty and expect some degree of leniency, but if the charges are serious enough he’ll need to actively cooperate to avoid substantial jail time.
It’s hard to say what kind of criminal liability he’s facing beyond lying to federal law enforcement officers. It’s possible that crimes totally unrelated to the Russia investigation have been uncovered. It’s also possible that he’s right at the beating heart of the Russia conspiracy-collusion case. Since Mueller already has Corsi’s electronic communications from 2016, he might not need him as a witness, but I’m sure it’d be nice to have him as a prosecution witness rather than an uncooperative defendant.
One thing that has been clarified is that the president was thinking about Corsi when he sent out these tweets:
The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess. They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts. They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want. They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t…
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 15, 2018
….care how many lives the ruin. These are Angry People, including the highly conflicted Bob Mueller, who worked for Obama for 8 years. They won’t even look at all of the bad acts and crimes on the other side. A TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 15, 2018
Three days before those tweets, NBC News reported that Corsi had told them in a telephone interview that he had found his interrogation “confusing and frightening,” believed the Special Counsel’s office was “determined to find a connection with WikiLeaks and me” and was “afraid they’re going to lock me up and put me in solitary confinement.”
The fact that Podesta had been hacked wasn’t the only thing Corsi knew before the rest of us. In April, he correctly predicted that Trump would attempt to launch a counterattack against Hillary Clinton and the “deep state.” Of course, he said that Clinton (and Obama) would both be charged with treason, so his track record isn’t any better there than it was in explaining the real story of 9/11.
Still, President Trump has been trying to get the FBI to prosecute Hillary Clinton, and now he’s going to have South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham chairing the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he can accuse Clinton of crimes.
I hope some of the people responsible for this astonishing disinformation wind up in jail. Corsi would be a good start.
. . . to this news:
Mueller had better not need Corsi as a witness, because Corsi’s credibility is exactly zero after his long career as a professional liar. Under oath or not, anyone who believes a word he says is really fucking stupid.
Lying to Mueller is not the same thing as Corsi lying to the MSM or the rubes on the right. If Mueller catches Corsi in a lie, that’s his ass, and Corsi knows it. That’s why he’s whining now about spending years in solitary because he’s been busted on several lies he’s already told.
Mueller knows the answers before Corsi utters them. Its not a question of believing him or not; its a question of whether his testimony matches with facts they already have. Mueller could care less if he lies because again, its Corsi’s ass on the line, and he’s done enough lying to warrant whatever time he ends up with. And I imagine from Mueller’s perspective, the more the merrier.
Mueller is about to tie Corsi to the truth. Corsi will be unable to spin a lie for the defense of anyone Mueller takes to trial. Even a pardon can not free him from telling the truth.
I think he means using him on the stand in trial like he did with Gates. Gates’ testimony was apparently fairly useless because the jury found him to be a liar. Luckily they had a paper trail, but the witness himself didn’t do much.
Corsi is a truly odious person, and about as important in history as Stalin’s executioners Nikolai Yezhov and Lavrentiy Beria. I.E. they were horrible people who wielded tremendous power for a brief period of time, and did horrible things — all in the service of people vastly more evil and powerful than they were: particularly people like George Bush and Mitch McConnell and now Donald Trump.
If Corsi hadn’t existed the right wing would have had to create him. He perfectly filled the rat-fucking post left vacant by the death of Lee Atwater.
Now he’s facing life in prison, and like all the Trumpites he suddenly gets religion and starts squealing like Joseph Vilachi in the “Valachi Papers” did about the Mafia.
The GOP no longer stands for anything positive. Not even in the most limited sense of tax cuts and small government and deregulation. It doesn’t have a program that anybody on the right wing cares about. Trump stopped talking about the tax bill because the base didn’t give a damn. Then he started talking about immigration and they perked up and started chanting “throw them out!”
The Birther Conspiracy B.S. of Corsi was nothing but the Swift-Boat campaign applied to a black man. Obama’s greatest appeal was that he was the embodiment of the American Dream. That a black man could rise to become President of the U.S. seemed like such a glorious hopeful moment of fulfillment of our greatest promise, like looking in the mirror and seeing – instead of our paunchy middle-aged, balding self, a super-hero looking like Christopher Reeves as Superman. We looked better than we actually are, for once.
Except if you are a right wing bigot, which is pretty much all of them. Then you reacted like Laura Ingram:
And WHY pray tell, don’t we “love them”? Because we’re raging bigots who feel like White America is the only legitimate America. Black and brown people taking a fully equal role? That’s “changes that have been foisted” onto “most of us.”
And the “most of us” means, un-self-consciously “White People.” Particularly George Bush’s “Real Merkins.”
And Corsi was the leading edge of that racist spear-tip. He was the active agent not afraid to get his hands dirty. He has a lot of blood on both of his hands today. The Vultures of his Kulturkampf have come home to roost with a vengeance in the Trump Administration and now a lot of people are dying to right-wing domestic terrorism.
The nihilism has come full circle.
So, they crashed the plane. They don’t care about the future. There isn’t a future. They only know that they hate the libs and whatever sensible people might want they want to do the opposite. Even if that means their children die in a Global Warming desert. Because it’s just so juicy sweet “owning the Libs!” seeing liberals in anguish about baking the planet and the fact that unless truly radical action is taken, their children are all going to die horribly. Stuff like that. Good stuff!
Corsi was far from unique. They all want to go down, and they know for certain that they are losing, that the racial changes they hate are irreversible, howling with their teeth in the throats of the rest of America, the majority of Americans, screaming “NO!”
Well, it’s going to be a bumpy ride, these next 20 years or so. It’s unfortunate that a significant minority of Americans have chosen this critical time to go absolutely bat-guano insane and are blocking everything we need to do to survive. We are simply going to have to crush them if we are going to survive.
A minor historical correction. Corsi is in no way comparable to Lavrenti Beria. The latter created the NKVD (one of the predecessors of the KGB) and the police state that Stalin created. He was infinitely more important and more disastrous for the world than the worm, Jerome Corsi. Beria was responsible for organizing the murder of many millions of people, Russians and Eastern Europeans. He was one of the greatest monsters of modern history.
The difference is that Trump doesn’t have the absolute power of life and death like Stalin did. If Trump succeeds in building his Utopia, in which he is absolute dictator like his hero Putin, then of course! Do you actually doubt for one split second, that this man utterly lacking in any trace of human compassion wouldn’t do exactly what Stalin did to his enemies.
Trump openly pines for the day when he can simply “lock her up!” – just give the order to his loyal troops to put all his enemies in camps. And declare martial law with himself in charge. His cultists would absolutely LOVE him if he could do exactly that. If he tried to overthrow the government and openly replace it with Trumpistan, they would all be saying “go for it!”
All about “owning the libs.”
Corsi is limited by the nature of civil society in America. He is not remotely less evil than Beria or Yezov, only less powerful. He plays essentially the same role, that of political enforcer, with as much violence as is permitted by the prevailing political culture. His type of authoritarian would kill enemies without qualm. And make no mistake. For Trump’s loyal Kultur warriors, WE are very much the enemies. Just as much terrorists as the Muslim terrorists they fondly imagine are marching on our borders.
They want to KILL YOU Astamari316. They want to kill you and your family very much dead. If someone would do that they would cheer. They are dead serious ready to march if Trump gives the command, like Mussolini giving the order to March on Rome in 1922.
I’d say the comparison to Beria is quite well taken – on a moral level which is what I’m comparing. Corsi just hasn’t had his chance to follow Trumps’ orders to shoot millions of people. But, have no delusion Corsi would shy away from the behavior that Beria got up to. For both of them their philosophy of absolute power, applied absolutely without morals entering into the matter makes them peas in a pod.
Enjoyed your comment and historical tie-ins. Granted both men were/are extreme sadists, sycophants and authoritarian lick-spittles. Beria, of course, lived in a society that demanded one be a cowering lick-spittle to (virtually absolute) dictatorship, while Corsi, living in a free society, has voluntarily elected to be a deformed reactionary foot soldier, rooting around in the moral filth of American “conservatism”. Sort of like being a very early Nazi. Hell, we can concede that Corsi dreams of being an American Beria (or Himmler).
But you did open your comment with the claim that the “conservative” worm Corsi was just as “important in history” as NKVD-founder and mass-murderer Beria, and that just can’t be sustained—as important as it is to identify the moral foundation and cherished ideals of American “conservatism”, haha!
Oh please. Corsi is a squalid miserable little blowhard, but that is all he is. Drag him out in the light and all he could do is blink. Comparing him to Beria is like comparing Beria to any of the millions of vodka-boasting Beria-wanna-be’s that Stalin’s Russia was full of. Beria wouldn’t have struck a match on any of them.
We are perhaps fortunate (who should be so lucky?) that Trump doesn’t have any Beria material to draw upon. Probably the single most dangerous person he has working for him is John Kelly, and Beria would have made John Kelly sh1t himself in about 3.7 seconds. If there’s a difference between now-here and then-there, that is the difference.
Beria was a serial rapist and mass murderer. Even by the standards of Stalinism he was something. There are (thankfully) no Berias in American politics.
Wait, isn’t this a kind of revolutionary act? Pushing back against the Deep State? Sticking it to The Man?
¡La lucha vive!
Like most rightwing vermin, Corsi not only has spread utterly false defamation stories but, when cornered, is the usual desperate rat seeking to make a deal without giving up anything.
This guy is utterly disgusting and I hope Mueller is able to find a way to prosecute this bastard.
