Froggy Bottom Cafe and Lounge – After the Storm Edition

Alright. Electricity is back on in my corner of the US. I don’t have any photos of the damage I saw around my community, but when you have tornadoes touch down nearby, you end up seeing more than a few upended trees, damaged structures, and utility poles. Never a dull moment during severe season. In my community, the worst severe weather goes just to the south of the city or just to the north. This was an exception. Hopefully we are not seeing the beginning of a new normal. In the meantime I am breathing a sigh of relief until the next round of storms. How are things where you are?

  1. Finn had six plate appearances this weekend and got six walks. He also closed out the game today by getting the batter to hit a comebacker and making a good throw to first. He won 7-5 on Saturday and 5-0 today.

  2. Power is back on for most folks in my community. I hope we are ready for the next set of storms. We definitely had tornadoes touch down in my city this last time. The system heading our way has the sort of energy you’d expect from a mid-winter system. Could be in for some interesting times early this week.

      1. Right on the Arkansas-Oklahoma border (think of the setting of True Grit and I am reasonably easy to find). It was pretty intense Saturday. Next system, depending on the forecaster, is expected to be worse. Tornado apparently touched down just a few blocks from my home Saturday. Drove by some of that damage early Sunday. Could have been a lot worse.

        1. I went to school with Doug Sahm’s son for a bit. We lost touch after I moved. He did well filling his late dad’s shoes later on. Spend any time in south central Texas and it “Tex Mex”, progressive country and so on were just part of the soundscape.

      1. People who go to New Orleans know about Hurricanes (the drink, not the cyclonic storm), but not many people know about the Tornado cocktail.

Thirsty Thursday’s Kathleen Cooke shows you how to mix up a Tornado featuring four different liquors!

        Tornado
        1 oz whiskey
        1 oz vodka
        1 oz rum
        1 oz tequila
        Coke
        1 tsp sugar
        Ice cubes

Preparation is the key with this recipe! Mix all liquors with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into a glass. Add in one teaspoon of sugar and stir before adding ice to the glass. Next step, add the coke and stir well.

That’s it for my recipes here. I’ll continue over at this week’s Midweek Cafe and Lounge.

  3. I’ve never tried a Vimeo link here, so let’s see what happens. This is of Ornette Coleman from 1979. I think this might be from his appearance in Season 4 of SNL. When I think about the sheer variety of musical guests that season (and really the first five seasons) and their willingness to experiment, I realize at least one of the positives that came with growing up during that turbulent era. I think Human Arts Ensemble, Defunkt, and even Lounge Lizards tried to draw on Coleman’s work at the time, but his genius was difficult to imitate:
