TNR has found a quote from George Herbert Walker Bush responding to a plan by Presidential candidate Pete Dupont for partially privatizing Social Security. It’s from the November 23, 1987 issue…
“I think it’s a nutty idea to fool around with the Social Security system and run the risk of [hurting] the people who’ve been saving all their lives…. It may be a new idea, but it’s a dumb one.”
Bush Sr. has been on record as opposing his son’s pet projects.
I guess he’ll never impress dear old dad.
I’m also amazed how often I find statements from Sr. against his son’s policies. Do they actually agree on anything?
I keep wondering what it must be like to be the father of a President who is totally screwing up the country while you realize it. This must be like a nightmare for him.
I guess that’s a good thing, since it’s a nightmare for us as well.
I never liked 41, but I respect him more than his liar of a son.
they have audio of that.
