Habits, Not Teddies

I was going to let it go. K-Lo’s rant about the Super Bowl halftime show was par for the course. And, besides, who can argue with her complaint? “Why can’t we have a national entertainment moment that does not include a mother gyrating in a black teddy?” I was just relieved that she didn’t point out that Beyoncé was causing some lust in the white folk.

In any case, I was going let it go until I realized that she had come back for a second bite at the apple. This time she got philosophical.

Yes, a woman embracing her womanhood is a powerful thing. Which is exactly what we tend to suppress in so many other contexts (say, federal policy mandating that we treat women’s fertility as a disease to be medicated). We absolutely are in desperate need of a sane, healthy embrace of human sexuality. But I have my doubts the halftime show pulled it off.

Just so we’re clear, K-Lo is saying that planning your parenthood is the opposite of embracing your womanhood. You always have to be ready for the pollen in the stalk. It seems absurd, but it’s Catholic Doctrine, and we know how the Church excels at embracing human sexuality.

I think Roy Edroso has it right: “Maybe the folks behind Conservapedia can organize an alternate Super Bowl where a bunch of nuns sing “Dominique” at halftime.”
