The so-called Millenium Bomber, Ahmed Ressam, who was caught attempting to cross the US border from Canada in 1999 on the way to bomb LAX has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.
U.S. District Court Judge John Coughenour, while handing down the sentence had this to say about the integrity of the US justice system in dealing with terrorist cases:
“We did not need to use a secret military tribunal, detain the defendant indefinitely or deny the defendant the right to counsel,” Coughenour said in court.
“Our courts have not abandoned the commitment to the ideals that set this nation apart.”
Bravo!
Now there’s a judge who has proven that you don’t have to forego the constitution and international treaties in order to successfully handle these types of cases. More importantly, he took the opportunity handed to him in this high profile case to make a politcal statement of major importance. That’s to be admired.
Take that, Bushco!
It’s worth noting that I initially heard about this aspect of the judge’s statement on Canadian TV. CNN? Not a word…
I like the judge’s speech. It needed to be said.
I am so proud of that judge.
Gawd, if only the cable news shows were talking about his speech instead of Aruba.
Today’s Guardian carries an abridged address by noted UK attorney Cherie Booth, commenting approvingly on the Law Lord’s ruling that indefinite detention of terrorist suspects was a violation of UK human rights law. The following snippet is just as applicable here:
I guess when push comes to shove she’s got more honor (sorry, honour) than her husband the Bush acolyte.
Catnip! Here’s another story for you — i haven’t read it yet — just saw the headline at the Seattle P.I.:
Outspoken judge draws praise, respect
“U.S. District Judge John Coughenour — a maverick who rides a Harley and sometimes visits the people he’s locked up — may be becoming as well known for his beliefs as for his rulings…. “
OUR HERO!
