Bush is a true believer of neo-conservative ideology. As a true believer, America must do whatever necessary in order to maintain its global hegemony. For neo-cons, Iraq is the country where the United States can secure a foothold in the mid-east and further promote its control of the region and the natural resources contained there. According to Bush it is imperative to strengthen our control in the mid-east and Iraq is essential to that mission.
For Bush, the idea of pulling out of Iraq equates to giving up our foothold in the region and allowing a regional power like Iran or China to have the upper advantage. I fear his decision making is not driven by ego or the mere preservation of his legacy, it is driven by the true believer mentality that Iraq is the cornerstone to American hegemony in the mid-east and we must pull out all the stops. If Bush were an egoist he would be thinking much more rationally in order to truly save face. We are not witnessing rational thinking from this president. At every step this president goes it his own way. This is why I fear a second surge in troops will not be Bush’s final attempt at “victory” in Iraq. With this line of thinking we are sure to witness continued bloodshed. We need true leadership! Stay tuned as the “decider” decides the fate of our troops.
