Crash Test Dummies
I like it. π
That’s my favorite song of theirs. The lead singer’s voice is unbelievable….and not really in such a good way. Go listen on Amazon.
I’m a slacker remember. Link please.
Alright lazybones.
Amazon link scroll down the page to listen to 30 second samples.
Thank you SN. I thought for sure you would tell me to get off my slackerly back end. π
Is that a parable or a very subtle joke?
Hi Jim. We could go with parable.
Ooh, a CTD fan. Have you ever noticed how dirty Swimming in your Ocean is?
I heard Brad Roberts the songwriter and deeeeeep voiced lead singer of the group talking about intentionally writing that song to see just how many sexual metaphors he could put in it.
PF
I just listened. Sorry SN, but the lead singers voice didn’t do anything for me, and I now realize I hate those 30 second samples.
Go on, listen to more. You know you want to. The lyrics are so fun and thoughtful.
I agree about the lyrics, I like those. But unless the melody grabs me, I just let it go.
Like I’ve said before, there are songs I’ve known for years that I still don’t know all the words to.
There are songs I’ve known — or thought I knew — for decades that, when I looked up the lyrics to them, I figured out I had them completely wrong.
And then there are songs like The Isrealites. When Desmond Dekker died I looked up the words and was surprised to discover that they were all English, although they seem to be arranged in some sort of Jamaican patois. I had thought about half the song was in some other language. Well, to my whitebread American ear, I guess in a way it was.
I remember that song and the only two words I remember out of it is The Isrealites.
I used to have a friend that was a quasi-Rastafarian and he got me turned on to Reggae. I honestly didn’t understand a lot of the words, but liked the music.
I didn’t know a thing about reggae until I discovered “Jammin'” by Bob Marley and the Wailers on a trip to England one year. I thought it was called “Charmin’.” I’d heard Clapton doing “I Shot The Sheriff” and just knew it was different from anything on the radio, but didn’t know anything about where it came from or who wrote it.
I also didn’t know that Isrealite was ska, sort of a proto-reggae. I knew it contained the phrase “don’t want to end up like Bonnie and Clyde,” but couldn’t make out the rest of the song, except for the very beginning, which I got wrong. I thought he was saying “slaving for breakfast” instead of “slaving for bread, sir.” Everything else was pretty much intelligible. I thought one phrase was saying something like “yasonah Allah” which just reinforced my belief that it was written in something other than English.
n/t
crop it down to the part that is.
I’ve done that many times and just today showed someone how to do that.
That’s one thing I really like about having a 7 megapixel camera — you’ve got lots of pixels you can throw away and still make a usable shot.
(and thanks for the compliment)
One of these days I want to get one of those super duper more megapixels than you’ll ever use cameras.
But I think the next toy I get will be a DVD camcorder. A friend has one and the clarity is really exceptional.
What beautiful wings!
I couldn’t believe how still the dragonfly stayed. I think maybe he was dead but it was seems weird that he would just die while holding onto a stalk of grass.
… and asstd lurking froggies. Looks like we all had lots of RL things to do today … π
Hi Olivia. What cha been doing today?
Deadheading and planting a few seeds. I take it you didn’t give George his buzzcut today?
No George lucked out. I was all ready to give him a buzz cut and a mohawk. Maybe tomorrow.
Planting more seeds huh. Do you have even a lawn? π
Hah! I did mine yesterday, or was it day before yesterday. π
I should clean up around the house more often. We were going through some old boxes yesterday I found a couple of poems I wrote about ten years ago. In my opinion, this guy is good. I actually thought one of them was plagiarized from Edward Lear until I looked at it closely and noticed that it didn’t have the word runcible anywhere in it.
I’ll contemplate posting them later. But right now, it’s getting close to naptime.
You gotta keep up with those nap, Omir. π
You have to post them now … you can’t tease us that way!
π
That’s what I get for opening my big yap.
This isn’t the Lear one. I remember coming up with this, vaguely, but I don’t remember what triggered the poem. I think I just wrote it in one sitting.
THat is wonderful!
<curtsey>
What SN said Omir. You poetry is always great.
May I use that when I teach poetry to my kids next year?
Thank you for asking
… cause this is amazing!
I think the whole poem is wonderful, but I especially like this bit:
unexpected snow…
I love that line.
and I love you.
I’m in and out – as I’m in a weird mood and I may have killed my LG Tromm washer that I got last year but am only now able to use… and the neighbors are so nice and I’m trying to de-load from yesterday and my head hurts from hitting it while I was taking out the trash and I’m worried about Iraq and I’m folding laundry piles after piles.. and I’m just all around moody.
ack. LOL
Where you been lately? Probably settling into that comfy new house.
I’ve been marching and protesting, baby π
Heh . . . I almost wrote “Out making the world safe for democracy, I suppose” instead of the bit about the house.
You’re chatting with a known enemy of the state – ya know. There was a Navy guy taking video of us the entire time of the march. Not cool. Was a very scary protest for me.
But I’ll go back out there of course
Medea Benjamin (co-founder of CP)his showing up next week π
Hey, cool! You get to show her now it’s done. π
When people are taking your picture you should hold up a Wile E. Coyote sign that says “Hello to all my friends and fans in domestic surveillance!” That way they know you’re watching, and it gives the talking heads on the TV news something to talk about.
I’ve got to run for a little bit and get dinner ready.
Back in awhile.
Some flowers from the Encino Farmer’s Market. It was very pleasant there, pretty much a family scene. The smells of freshly baked bread, flowers, popcorn, and smokey barbecure were fantastic.
Oh my!!! They almost look too perfect!! I thought the first set was a bunch of painted stemware π
Lovely, MM π
Thanks, DJ! After I posted these I fell victim to a delicious nap attack. Almost couldn’t wake up again, my son had to pour a bucket of ice water over me!
Those are cool lookin’. Farmers market, huh? I used to occasionally take pictures of the fruit arrangements at the local supermarket. No good reason, I just like doing pictures of the big piles of apples.
I took some produce photos, too, but I guess I don’t really have a knack for that since none of them came out very interesting!
is around — it helps me not miss your ocean pictures so much.
I really like the flower collages you’ve doing — I’m completely taken with their splashes of color and interweaving lines.
Thanks, AndiF! I miss the ocean, too, all the great photo ops, and an awesome nature walk just outside my door… I think I’ve put on a few pounds since I got back to LA, unfortunately!
Just like you, the flowers are looking good today. You’ve become quite the farmer’s market flower stalker lately, eh? Fantastic views… the first one made me think of finely crafted chocolates until I realized they were buds! I hope Olivia enjoyed the dianthus in that second shot, hehe.
Thanks, IVG! We really do have to stop meeting like this! I was down for the countdown right after I posted these and almost couldn’t wake up again.
I am home from the convention and still tired. The convention was a blast and I met lots of great people. I did see some things happen at the convention that sadden me greatly and will be doing a dairy about them later. Old school politics is alive and well in Texas and doing anything including slander to win is still acceptable….NOT!!!!! This will come back to bite the assholes doing it in 2008.
Has anybody seen Maryb? Do you know if she’s back from Las Vegas yet?
Is anyone around?
D’ya have a good day?
Hi you two. I must have stumbled into Canada night at Booman. π
Hi SN. How are things is NC? Have I ever mentioned that my brother moved to NC about 2 years ago, for work?
Where does he live? I’m guessing either the Triangle or Charlotte.
He just moved to Greensboro. Hw started out in the Charlotte-area.
My daugher goes to college at UNCG and this is the first summer she’s staying there. She really likes it.
How was your day SN?
Lots of cleaning and catching up on some yard work now that it went below 90 for a change. Now we are having some good thunderstorms passing through.
At least at my place … π Is this the time of year for bad storms there?
Yeah, any time it stays hot and humid you’re bound to have some convective type thunderstorms. Not as magnificent as in the midwest, however. I miss those.
Hi Olivia. We had a great day – #2 of summer vacation. How was your day?
It was a good day. Working around the house kind of day.
We took Andrew to his first Art Fest today. There was a kids’ area and he got to pound on some drums for a little while.
How are your herbs doing?
I imagine he had a great time playing drums.
Herb’s are doing well. Smelling good. Tasting good. π
for dill? My plant isn’t looking so healthy? I had the same problem with dill last year. Right now, it is getting morning sun.
Not knowing your growing situation, my guess would be that it’s not getting enough light if it’s only morning light. Dill likes full sun and rather poorish soil, but well drained… so if it’s in a damp spot or too rich soil it might not be very happy about it. As a general rule, herbs don’t want a real good soil, but do need good drainage and lots of sun. For example, our sage thrives in rocky poor soil along the fence edge of our yard which borders the neighbor’s driveway…
I gave up on dill a few years ago, not because it wouldn’t grow, but because the rabbits regularly mowed it down and I got frustrated re-planting.
Thanks, I’ll move it to full sun!
I was going to say full sun is recommended too, but I don’t grow it here so not sure what else to try … π
Howdy all, TT, Olivia, SN and lurkers… talk about a putzing around the house day, I got that in spades today. Just wasn’t motivated enough, nor was it warm enough to go work in the garden, so I putzed around and basically slacked. FM, please take note of last comment, eh?
Need to get some food in me, but wanted to stop in and say hi to all…
Olivia, thanks to you I made the leap and created my b-thingie a little bit ago. There’s not much there yet, but I’ll figure this out and have it customized soon. If you’re interested, go here.
Sounds like everyone had a pretty mellow day, overall?
on the site IVG!
Thx, TT! I hope folks will be patient with me as I get my rhythm up doing it… I’ve got to figure out all the formatting issues, but once I do, I hope it will turn out to be a good resource for people. If I can get into a daily routine of shooting pics and writing, it could be fun.
I’m sure that it will be great.
Hi there … did you hear that squeal all the way from Ottawa? I’m going to look as soon as I post this …
I see you checked in late last night! It was a s-l-o-w night. NDD’s having that bbq w/e right?
I’m going to add you to my b-roll too … π
Didn’t hear the squeal, but since you’re largely responsible for this step, I’m glad you approved. Now get ready for the onslaught of my formatting questions!
Yeah, I was up late, and felt lousy as a result today, but I did catch up on a lot of diaries and other stuff. Thus my slackerly day…
I’d like to add you and FM to mine too, when I get to that point, so if you have any objections, let me know soon.
I’ve never been one of those! Kewl … π Yes to adding my site … and if you need help doing that let me know. Seriously, feel free to send e/m, okay?
Are you feeling better now though? Do you think it’s the crummy weather that has you down?
That you must approve … π
I have to approve comments? Oh crap… better turn off that comment moderation thingie then! Thx for doing so, though!
Ok, now not moderating comments! Sheesh.
Yeah, I think the weather has something to do with my crummy mood and feelings lately… then the frustration of needing to get stuff done, and just not finding the oomph to do it. This too, shall pass, as they say.
When I was out deadheading etc., and told him how overwhelmed I was by it all and he said I should let it die LOL … so no pressure from them on keeping things up I suppose.
Hopefully it will warm up soon so that you can get back out there.
Hey, that’s cool! I really like the name you’ve chosen and look forward to more pics and articles.
Just be patient till I get the rhythm going! That name I’ve been kicking around for a long time as a potential book title for the guide I want to write… and this blog is intended to get me off my butt and writing… we’ll see how that works, lol.
I’ll be honest, I read nothing prior, but wanted to say hello. I’m sorry I swore I would not get involved in the whole Armando thread again and I did. I’m sorry. :>)
Hugs to all and I promise what is outside the door stays outside the door. :<)
I’m trying to prepare my house for a move, but I am such a packrat I don’t see it happening, even though I know it must!
After my husband moved out I went through this major lifechange where I just wanted all of the clutter out of my life and my house. I thought I’d regret getting rid of all of the books and clothing and nick-nacks and everything, but I really don’t. I like space!
LOL…This is partly a move to get rid of all that was him, but really I am just trying to get rid of all that is not necessary. I know it will not be a complete success, but I do want to get rid of alot. I want to start new and fresh and clean. I really do.
He moved all of his stuff out (after 20 years of marriage it’s hard to remember what stuff belongs to who!) and I just started to really dig the extra space and the wide open feel of the house. Cleaning it and getting rid of clutter was kind of a metaphor for the way my mind was feeling too! π
Hi Kama – where are you moving to? Not far I hope. Good luck with the clearing and the moving. At least it gives you a good excuse to tackle accumulated stuff. It’s amazing how STUFF adds up isn’t it?
Not far! Just a smaller place around the corner. I am only moving so I can finally adress the accumulation and maybe save a bit each month.
Moves are good for pack rats! Painful, but good! You will feel so much lighter in the end.
Figures…this looks like the best weather day of the Seattle leg of the trip, and I spend most of it sleeping whilst spouse was ensconced on the computer… π
Did at least make it out to church though — and got a treat; the choir at St. Mark’s Cathedral did Polenc’s Mass in G for the service. I’ve sung the Poulenc Gloria and could immediately recognize the similarities. Polenc was fond of dissonences — not sure if being French has anything to do with that. As a singer, it’s always cool to come across a new work and still be able to identify with it in some way.
Heading out to dinner down the street shortly, then need to go get bus schedules — the ferry terminal supposedly has a complete set available.
Have a good evening/night/whatever…
How many days until Alaska?
visit this evening. I’ll see everyone tomorrow.
We’ll catch up with you again soon, I’m sure! Enjoy the rest of the weekend and your new summer freedom!
As for me, I should check out for a while myself, and get some food in me… not to mention the shower I’ve blown off all day due to slacking. Will check back later to see who’s stirring in the FBL…
Ciao for now, folks!
over here.
