Al Gore and UN Panel on Climate Change Win Nobel Peace Prize
Climate change campaigner Al Gore and the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change have been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Mr Gore, 59, was vice-president under Bill Clinton and has since devoted his efforts to environmental campaigning.
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change brings together the world’s top climate scientists.
The Nobel committee said it wanted to help the world focus on the threat it faced from climate change.
Thanks Oui (I overslept).
Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize
From a diary poll in February:
Two out of three so far, time to announce in not too distantfuture.
David Ray Griffin does not.

When I try to explain my disgust about this I lapse into incoherent type rage nobody understands.
Way to go AL!
I heard Al speak about a week ago. He has updated the information about global warming in his presentation and the news is not good. He talked about how we all have an ethical responsiblity to the planet and to each other. He talked about the need for political will. He’s seen the lack of will in our Congress. I think the most ethical thing he could do is run for president. I can see why he would find such an effort distasteful to say the least. I know he is not a Messiah, environmentally or otherwise. But he has been showing leadership in many areas over the past few years. Run, Al, run.
I agree, Kahli!
Run Al, Run!!!!!
I second that, he’s the man for the task at hand.
All-Right!!
I just got done reading nearly 500 comments in the New York times on this, with about 10% bashing Gore for all the reasons we would expect from the uneducated and unenlightened flip side of reason in this country….
However, I was heartened to read many positive comments from people in other countries and the US as well. Many, many of the the comments were to urge Gore to run for President, which I just don’t think he will do. Plus I would hate to see the smearing that would go on if he did run, it’s bad enough the amount that goes on over the film.

LONDON (Telegraph) Oct. 2 – Al Gore’s climate-change documentary An Inconvenient Truth promotes “partisan political views”, a High Court judge has ruled.
Normally that would almost certainly make it unlawful for the Oscar-winning film to be shown to schools. But Mr Justice Burton indicated that it can be shown if teachers follow new guidance to prevent the former US vice-president’s views being wrongly “promoted” to children.
Changes to the old guidance notes were rushed through by the Government after Stewart Dimmock, a father of two, a Kent school governor and a member of political group the New Party, asked the court to ban the film from the classroom.
Mr Dimmock argued the film was unfit for schools because it was politically partisan and contained serious scientific inaccuracies, as well as “sentimental mush”. His lawyers accused the Government and New Labour “Thought Police” of backing the film as a way of “brainwashing” pupils on global warming.
John Day, of Malletts Solicitors, described the offer to re-write the guidance as “a U-turn”, but said it did not go far enough. “No amount of turgid guidance” could change the fact that the film was unfit for consumption in the classroom.
"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
l don’t agree with this assessment, but he raises some interesting points that are certainly relevant:
lTMF’sA
Al Gore has earned the prize as Edwards has put it for
Gore has stood up to ridicule and political adversaries to continue his campaign of knowledge and
alert Americans to the dangers that threaten them and their children, and the world community at large.
The US is a large country and a major polluter that must wake up to its responsibility.
It has been a lonely battle for him at times, but the fact that he persisted is worthy of celebration and acknowledgment.
It is essential for the planet and for humankind that Gore’s message is heard in the US.
If the Nobel prize helps spread Gore’s message wider and make it more acceptable
in the US and the world, it is has served its function.
Congratulations, Al Gore!!!
I’m going to try once again the reasons why I will forever condemn this global warming concept. My objections lie in the totalitarianism of it all. We are just replacing the war on terra meme with a war on the enviornment meme. A war is still a war.
The same people who rally on about the neo-cons and their war on terra also tell me with the very same dedication of Faux News viewers that my conversion from $600 every ten days for oil to a pellet stove is just not good enough? WTF? I was told wood pellets rely on machinery?
For most this is the only green solution.

Big Al Gore with his massive compassion for humanity could have rallied himself with thousands of other completely worthwile causes. Depleted uranium is one of them. Perhaps a real investigation solving the questions more and more people have about 911. How about why media has supressed information about a simple drug that kills multiple versions of cancer.
Simply not, the establishment must remain the establishment and carbon trading as the new Wall Street will be justification for the massive repossetion of the western world’s modern lifesyle.
Blow me Big Al!
Even from the most pessimistic point of view, isn’t an economy based on the reduction of pollution better that one based on human suffering (in Market Capitalism, value=[suffering])?
No because they won’t stop at rational. It is going to by the very same totalitarianism seen currently in the Bush administration.
They are going to shove people into mega-cities.
They are going to lower the modern lifetyle of the entire western world and for what, so the few CEOs can funnel more resources to the gold rush China factory building boom?
So they can make us contaminated dog food, lead painted childrens toys and now lipstick. No it is a scam plain and simple.
