I see Trump is still fantasizing about staying in office longer than eight years. This time, he’s convinced himself that his supporters might demand that he stay in office for a third term, as if the rest of us would just accede to their demands. He’s getting way ahead of himself. First he needs to win election to a second term before he can talk about blowing off the Constitution to serve a thibrd.
I’m not sure what I’ll do if Trump is reelected. Maybe it’s something I should think about. Maybe I ought to be making some kind of contingency plans. Do I set up a survivalist camp in the Idaho wilderness? Whatever I’d do, it wouldn’t involve emigrating, because I’d never cede this country to this president and his supporters. On the other hand, I’d probably have little choice to give up on politics ever setting this place right. If the American people choose this president again, even once, that will convince me that they’re beyond help.

the only thing between us and disaster is the Democratic party.
in other words, we have as much chance as a middle school basketball team against the Toronto Raptors.
There’s always Canada.
One thing if you’ve got family there. For me, that’s a coward’s way out.

Yet more inflammatory, anti-democratic framing by our dangerous demagogue. This is Der Trumper’s version of the “emergency decree” issued by Hitler that abrogated the Weimar Republic, just as his refusal to acknowledge the existence and established powers of the Congress is his version of the Reichstag fire.
That these sorts of anti-constitutional statements (he makes them frequently) are not seized upon by the corporate media shows they ultimately are in on the game, as does the absolute refusal by any Repub to condemn them. Today’s Repubs would absolutely countenance a lawless seizure of power by a dictator, as long as he described himself as a “conservative”. They are no longer a legitimate party for a democracy.
The American people failed as a political people in 2016 whatever their chance for a mulligan in 2020, and have been anti-democratic for quite some time– as their unthinking acceptance (not to say adoration) of the worst elements and mechanisms of the antiquated constitution makes plain. While the American right would participate in a revolution to bring down a democratically legitimate government that they abhorred, it seems doubtful that the American left would revolt to bring down even an unconstitutional one. And if Der Trumper and his followers refuse to cede power upon the loss of an election, there’s not much doubt that the US military would side with the bellicose “conservative” faction against the constitution and “rebels”, oath be damned. That’s what militarism is all about. Illusions of “national security” trump democracy.
