Hello again painting fans.
This week I will be continuing with the painting of the Grand Canyon. The photo that I’m using is seen directly below. I’ll be using my usual acrylic paints on a 6×6 inch canvas.
When last seen the painting appeared as it does in the photo seen directly below.
I’ve added more color, darkening things a bit to see if the image will have the illusion of great distance. Note the brown lit buttes and dark shadows below. I’ve left the far distance lighter for an attempt at aerial perspective.
The current state of the painting is seen in the photo directly below.
I’ll have more progress to show you next week. See you then.
Earlier paintings in this series can be seen here.
It’s been so long since I’ve been to the Grand Canyon. I need to get back, and also to see Bryce Canyon and Zion again.
I always manage to drive past the exits to Grand Canyon while on the I-40. Really need to figure out how to schedule my life a bit better.
The painting itself as of a couple weeks ago looks like it is really coming along. I like how you are getting the background detail here. Foreground detail is a work in progress. I’m sure a lot can happen in a couple weeks. And yes, I get the impression from the painting that there is an aerial perspective – it at least has the feel of viewing the actual subject itself from the perspective of the photographer. I’m liking what I am seeing. Of course, I am no artist – still barely can draw stick figures. I do know my way around a camera and when I see a landscape portrait that captures what I might be trying to capture with a 35mm or even my cell phone (the cameras on those things are now crazy good), I get impressed. Hopefully we’ll see more of this one.

Sometimes it is good to take a break from our hobbies as well. I am sure that however this painting is progressing or will progress, that it will be pretty cool.
