According to Reuters:
The move, expected in a White House ceremony, would come over the protests of Senate Democrats who complained that the blunt, combative Bolton lacked credibility.
According to CNN, Bolton’s appointment will be announced at 10 am ET this morning.
Chris Dodd spoke about the impending appointment on Sunday and echoed what his opponents have been saying for months:
“This would be the first U.N. ambassador since 1948 we’ve ever sent there under a recess appointment. That’s not what you want to send up, a person that doesn’t have the confidence of the Congress,” Dodd told “Fox News Sunday.”
Bolton will hold the position until January, 2007 – just enough time for Bolton to cause major chaos, as is his pattern, in his efforts to “reform” the UN. Stay tuned for some hard line statements by Bolton as he attempts to further the agenda on the neocons. He will not sit quietly.
More as reactions come in…
A “ceremony” for Bolton? This is hardly a ceremonial occasion. Maybe Bush will give him a preemptive medal too…
Bush is big on that lately. Think about the stage craft that went into his introduction of Roberts. I’ve been thinking it’s like a nest of vipers. Bush has to keep promoting these people because they all have the goods on him.
It’s all very incestuous.
CNN is covering this live right now – 10 am ET.
“grrrrr” comes to mind…
Yee-haw!! I’m John Bolton and I’m here to reform thissy here rootin’ tootin’ United Nations!
The arrogance of the Bush administration never ceases to amaze me. I think I’m glad that I can’t watch this on TV.
Bush: “Because of partisan delaying tactics” blah blah blah…
What BS! The only delaying tactics have come from the WH which has refused to release unredacted NSA intercepts so the senate can fully investigate Bolton.
Bush and Bolton should both be ashamed of themselves. Bush says Bolton will bring “dignity” to the position. That is one word that will never be used to describe John Bolton.
Well, it wasn’t as grand as I expected. Roberts got the big hall and a red carpet. Bolton got a small room and bookcases for a backdrop. Not very dramatic.
If Bush was so sure about having the votes, why didn’t Frist push it thru? Trigger the nuclear option and all? What a baffoon!
Hmm… shall we start guessing on how long it will be before Bolton causes outrage among our allies?
well Hitler put large medals on his thugs, and paraded them all over, often.
I wonder how many he signed up for the draft at the past weekend scouting jamboree ???? Youth Corps
I need a drink.
I mentioned this on the Kos board.
Bush bypassed Congress, even though significant insight to Bolton’s management style was gleaned. Would this make Bush legally liable in a civil lawsuit over the eventual hostile work environment lawsuit that will be filed by one or more of Bolton’s staff members?
Anybody catch Lieberman’s act on this?
“Yes, he will go to the UN under a cloud. That said, it’s time for Congress to put this behind us and get behind Bolton as he is our representative at the UN…”
Joe, Joe, Joe. How many times does W kiss you each and every day? Besides, if the lying, cheatin’, spyin’ sombitch is under a cloud here, what do you think the rest of the UN thinks of Mr. Bolton?
Lieberman’s comments illustrate exactly why the dems are a minority party. Beacause they deserve to be with wussy senators like Lieberman. Show me a good loser, and I’ll show you a loser – Vince Lombardi.
Yes, Bush appointed Bolton, there’s not much Lieberman can do about that in a practical sense. But there is a lot he can do politically. He could have used his little pulpit on MTP (or Wolfie, I forget which), to talk about how this is a travesty and a blatantly stupid position for the president to take.
<rant>Yes. Call the president Stupid. It will get on all the airwaves. Rush will attack you. It will be all over Fox News. But guess what. The message will get out to all the conservative (and not so conservative) media that this move was stupid! </rant>
You’d think the Democrats were some kind of boogeyman or gremlin destroying the process of democracy, the way he talks about it.
The Dems have got to really got to throw it back at them. Its beginning, its being said more often, but the line really needs to emphasize that the Republicans have a radical, narrow agenda and they are not interested in working with anybody in the world who disagrees with them.
They do not speak for the American people. I am so sick of McClellan telling the press corp what it is the American people want. Today he was saying they want reform at the UN, which ironically is the same thing as appointing Bolton.
They pervert the rules and have no respect for general consensus. Though Bolton’s appointment is legal, its callous, and it is seen by the world as pompous and thoughtless. The polls show Americans are not interested in Bolton being the ambassador and yet that swollen-eyed snake-tongued mouth-puppet McClellan will look directly at the press and the cameras and say this is what the American people want.
