I’ve mentioned the the ideas contained below in a couple of comments, but I decided to post it a dKos in hopes of reaching the masses, and then cross posted it here… just because, well, this place is where I keep my lilly pad.
If you listened to Bush’s speech today, or read it, or read about it, this diary is important to you. Some moderate folks, some non-political folks, and certainly almost all Republicans eat the stuff he said today up. His message, basically, is:
They are blowing up children. They hate us. They cannot be appeased. We must fight them there, not here. We cannot fail against this evil
I’ve recently read parts of Dying To Win by Robert Pape. And the book contains a very simple, very powerful argument, which I think we all need to understand, to defeat the simplicity, and wrong-headedness, that Bush is spouting. If you don’t know about the book, joining me for a second, after the flip.
Pape’s thesis is really very basic, and very simple. And it completely blows almost everything Bush says out of the water.
Pape did a statistical analysis of suicide bombings in the modern world, searching for the root causes. It is based on solid social scientific evidence. It doesn’t appear, in my reading, to be ideological in any way. And the basic thesis can be grasped if you just plod through the first couple of chapters at the bookstore, or read a diary on dKos, for that matter.
Pape would tell you that suicide bombings are caused when democratic societies, like the U.S., occupy foreign lands with bases or soldiers, particularly where the occupying forces do not share the same culture/religion with the people being occupied.
So, when Bush suggests that we are going to keep ourselves safe from 9/11-like events, and car bombings, and train bombings, etc., by fighting a war in Iraq, he is exactly wrong. Our forces in Iraq are creating the exact conditions necessary to make people want to engage in suicide bombings.
And, when Bush says, as he did in his speech today, and I paraphrase, “To people who say Iraq is causing more terrorists, I would remind them that we weren’t in Iraq when bin Laden attacked us on 9/11, and the Russians opposed Iraq but were still subjected to the school bombing in Beslan.” Well, your response, being a well informed individual, and knowing what you know about Pape’s thesis, is pretty easy. People commit suicide bombings because there are troops from a democratic country on the ground in their homelands, and the troops do not mesh well culturally or religiously. So, 9/11. Well, bin Laden stated clearly that his goal was the removal of U.S. bases in Saudi Arabia. Our troops there, a remnant of the first Gulf War, were the pre-existing condition that caused a large group of Saudi young men to fly planes into buildings. And Russia (I know, a questionable democracy) — well, they have troops on the ground in Chechnya which led to Beslan.
The book goes on to argue that Islamic fundamentalism is only tangentially related to suicide bombings, citing plenty of examples of secular bombers fueled by (you guessed it) occupation by a non-assimilating democratic force.
It is how oppressed people fight back against democracies who are invading them. It has been fairly effective as a tool of war for marginalized peoples. People are lining up to kill us, in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Saudi Arabia. And they aren’t insane. This is their rational response to the situation on the ground. And if we don’t wise up. Learn from the facts in evidence. We are doomed to see more explosions. Coming to theaters near you, perhaps.
So, I think it is important, that we are prepared to tell people these facts. In response to our fearless leader’s rhetoric.
Sorry. Didn’t mean to lecture to anyone here. Just because I read part of a book. But listening to Georgie today kind of sent me off the nut, I guess. And this is a powerful little bit of information that has been planted in my head. So I wanted to share it with you all.
Your post is especially valuable to me because I would have never known about the book and really don’t have a lot of time for reading.
Frankly, if people from an invading country broke down my door and pointed guns at me, it would be a mighty temptation to take them out in whatever way I could. Hope that doesn’t happen, and I hope it’s not American military. George must not be allowed to steal our democracy by military coup.
My suggestions for more reading time. Continue to live in Bush’s America. Soon you will be in the 0.2% of the people who will own everything, or in the 98.8% of people who are essentially jobless. More time to read either way.
Yeah. The parts I have read are very intuitive. Lots of people in their situation would do the same thing. You say “terrorist” I say “freedom fighter.” You say “suicide bomber” I say “patriot.” Tomato, tomatoe, potato, (What’s that thing called Quayle-boy), let’s call the whole thing off. Whoa — burst into show tunes mode there for a minute. But, it is a simple concept, bourne out by the facts. And I think it blunts about everything Bush says in his War on Terror arguments.
Hey Joe! I picked up Zinn’s “A Peoples History of the U.S. I like it. Just started with the genocide of the natives. Man never learns hunh? Any other recommendations(book wise)?
I am still in the midst of Zinn right now. I am slow reading. Spending too much time here, awaiting indictments and such. Awaiting my novel.
But, yes. The best book ever for me. In terms of mind opening. Hegemony or Survival. Noam Chomsky. I don’t know how you can think about U.S. Forgeign policy and not be sickened after reading it. Powerful. Dangerous book. Highly recommended, if you think you might want to oppose what your government is doing for the rest of your life.
Thanks Joe, I’ll check it out. Presently I’m also reading Chomskys “Imperial Ambitions”. Take care buddy, blog with you soon.
Hey. If you are up to it, I meant to ask you, you should pick up the Zinn mantle. Blog on about his book. In the post Revolutionary chapters. For the good people here. They lovet he topic. And we’d all love to hear your voice in diaries, I’m pretty sure. Assuming you ever find the damn time in that schedule of yours.
Best. And, I will always remember, that Jello is not just a snack food for my kids.
Your soooo a role model. Off to work, Ciao!
There’s always room for Jello. ๐
ever read Eduardo Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America? It’s basically a “people’s history” of the rest of the hemisphere, as well as very good background on the rise of mercantilist empires worldwide.
AND, as with many latin writers, Galeano has a lyricism that will keep you turning the pages. I’m also a big fan of his book “El Futbol A Sol y Sombra” (Soccer in Sun and Shadow). It’s a must for fans of the beautiful game.
Have to put them on the reading list.
Less troops occupying sovereign nations’ lands = less people willing to die to make us pay.
Less arrogant strutting about with guns and bombs in order to make the world over in our image = less people blowing up schools, subways, buildings, you know, whatever it takes to get our attention.
Pretty simple isn’t it? Why, oh, why don’t people get it?
Nice formulations. ๐
I guess we are going to have to educate them brinnaine. I like this because it is such a simple message. And true and powerful. Best kind of teaching tool.
Heh. I learned from a master! ๐
When I was in the classroom, I used to do a lot of “what if/let’s imagine” scenarios with my students — trying to get them to think what things might look like if they were standing on the other side of whatever position they were taking — I really feel like this is the ONLY way that Americans will be able to understand this simple point.
We need foreign intervention, right here, on our soil, and very, very soon. Once Bush gets the ability to declare martial law and send in the troops domestically, we are all screwed (including the troops).
I’ve been telling my sister for several years now that bush follows his own ‘script’. He dreams up something like the Iraq invasion and he has a plan of how things will go. We invade to free the people, they love us for it, it may be difficult but worth it, progress is slowly made as in the elections, constitution, etc etc and he gets on tv to periodically promote his fantasy script as what is happening and all according to his plan.
That it has no basis in reality means nothing as he really has no clue as to what is really happening and he doesn’t care either…he just goes out with his prewritten updates etc all according to his plan…in other words that old saying definitely applies to him-don’t confuse me with facts or more importantly with bush is don’t even tell him the facts-he wouldn’t believe them anyway.
He’s of course looked into his own eyes and seen his soul(although I’d be hard pressed to find a soul peering out of his dead eyes myself) and his gut tells him he’s right, case closed. Party on till the next update, pretzel man.
