FBC Cafe – Humpday Edition

jeezluise time is flying by these days… I’m pretty sure I’m not alone feeling like I am living in a world that is
perpetually 6:15 am and 11:00 pm without a whole lot of moments of sanity in between.  It’s a crazy business, whatever it is you find yourself doing, and it’s hard to take a time out and a deep breath.  So just for you, just in time, right smack in the middle of the muddled work week, here it is – your reservoir of clarity, your bastion of e-caffiene, cyber-news and stunning pics of all the amazing vistas outside of Gooserock’s window…  come on in, tell us how yer doing, what’s making you happy, and what’s firing you up, cause it’s YOUR FBC Cafe – the Humpday Edition!

OK I tried the goofy intro today.  It’s late when I am writing this, and I just finished practicing a speech for manana and that always makes me feel like I should be Rod Roddy decribing the folks on contestants row what they are bidding on… (btw is the Price is Right still on?  Does Bob Barker still make folks reach into his pocket to snag a $100 bill if they guess the price just right?  Did anyone else find that a bit creepy???)  See!  I’m a mess!  Someone take the ‘puter away
from me before I hurt someone!

OK, I’m heading to class to learn about (in order of appearance): hypothesis testing with confidence limits, estimation bias, the problems that develop when corporations/executives get away with cheating, a speaker on socially responsible equity funds, and finally, a 5 minute speech on something I haven’t decided yet…  I better get crackin’!  I’ll leave
the rest of the blogging for you guys.

Drinks are on the house!  (See, I’m not learning jack in business school…)

Hey!  I’m here!  And on time!!!  As Mel Allen used to say “How about that!?!?!”

Hey Diane – stop shaking your head in disgust!  I can see you back there!  ðŸ˜‰

Anyway, it’s Humpday again, halfway through the work (or study) week as the case may be, and the FBC Cafe is up and open for business!

So I’ve got a ton of stories to tell, but only sporadic moments to share ’em between
classes, but comeon in and take a load off anyway…

Regardless, it’s Cafe time, and I gotta tell you all, it’s great to be somewhere familiar if only for a quick read of the headlines and barnstorm through the Cafe.  This whole school thing ain’t like I remember it…  sure, there’s still tons of beer, cute girls (and boys) and swarmy professors with plaid sportscoats with those neat leather patches on the elbows, but wow what a difference a the years make.  My liver and my brain don’t feel up to the challenge quite yet, but every day brings something back, and the lights start
to flash on again in the cobweb-filled noggin…

I gotta say though, College is intimidating this time around.  The wicked smaht kids are kicking ass and I’m frantically paddling against a neverending barrage of reading and problem sets and projects and clubs and godknows what…

and the best part is, it’s fantastic.

In other news, I discovered the magic of the Americano at a local cafe…  the double shot of expresso diluted with boiling water sure ups the caffienated ante over my standard issue cupojoe…  sit back and I’ll fire up the expresso machine for you all and
in the meantime, what’s up with all of you???

FBC Cafe – Humpday Edition

Oh my how time flies.  It’s Humpday again, halfway through the work (or study) week as the case may be.  How are things going for you?  Getting anything good done between eagerly checking the internets for Cindy updates?

Regardless, the Cafe is alive, kicking and (just for Diane) finally OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Today is stats day for me.  While you sip your lattes and snarf down bacon and bagels, I’ll be desperately trying to re-learn a basic statistics course I took maybe 10 years ago…

Let’s see what you all remember, or maybe you need to spend next week at Math Camp!

FBC Cafe – Humpday Edition

Happy Humpday Tribbers!

It’s a beautiful day in the Bay Area, and I’ve got the world on a string…  no work, just play, and a tiny bit of studying for your host today.  So feel free to swing by the Cafe in the park and we’ll toss a frisbee or a baseball or just watch the world go by and ponder how the hell working 10 hours a day ever feels “normal”.

I’ve got some chopped nectarines and what the Abbott-ette dubiously dubbed “pluquats” (which I thought were Indians with a giant casino in southern CT until about 5 minutes ago)…  see you all inside!
Did any of you catch the descriptions on all the news outlets on how a space shuttle re-enters the atmosphere and lands?  Absolutely insane.  It makes landing a 747 look like a piece of cake.  I’m pretty sure I can’t land either, but holy hell, that looks like a crazy ride.  Kudos to the fine folks who helped land it safely.

What’s on your plate today?

FBC Cafe – Humpday Edition

Happy Humpday Tribbers!

After a 3 week hiatus, the Humpday Edition is back from vacation and ready to meet your less than political chatting needs.  Wherever you are, whatever time it is, we’re here to brighten your day, fill your cup and fix you up with a side of bacon.

So step up to the bar, tear open the paper and have at it ’cause the Café is up and open for business!

Plenty to chat about in the news today –

Paul Hackett (and grassroots dems everywhere) inspired many with an exceptional showing last night.  BTW – thanks to everyone here, at dKos, MyDD and SSP for keeping those of us at work up to the minute with constant streaming posts last night.  GREAT JOB!

Raffy Palmiero may have torn up his ticket to Cooperstown by testing for the same dope Ben Johnson used to give away a Gold Medal a decade ago…  on the upside, there are still plenty of awkward Viagra jokes to be made, so have at ’em.

And, Adidas bought Reebok today, bringing me one step closer to uniting 2 of my favorote sneakers of youth into one uber-sneaker – The Pump-Samba Classic.  I’d rock those with some Umbro shorts and it’d be like 6th grade all over again.

So come on in and take a load off, and maybe later I’ll show you some pics from my trip if work is slow…

FBC Cafe – Humpday Edition

Happy Humpday Tribbers!  Welcome to my final Humpday Cafe as an actuary!  Next week at this time I will be happily jaunting around Mexico looking for Coronas and Mayan ruins.  (Not necessarily in that order.)  After that, I return to you a student, and a poor one at that.  I reserve the right to steal food from behind the counter, and drink from the tap in the bar when no-one’s looking.  So, in honor of this glorious day, today’s topic of the day is “Careers I once had and why I left ’em or loved ’em.”  Because apparantly everyone changes jobs 42 times in their lifetime (or something like that).  Happy stories, sad stories, and tales of office holiday parties gone horribly wrong are all welcome and encouraged!

So without further ado, I pronounce the Café to be up and open for business!
You all know the rules – in the Café, anything goes, but please remember to tip your server.  Oh, and whatever rules Diane and co. have devised restricting large pics and wide comments and all that still apply.  Unless it’s a really cool picture, then it’s ok.  ðŸ˜‰

NOW HIRING – the Humpday Cafe will need a surrogate host next week.  Please post a resume indicating your blogging experience, and the reason I should pick YOU to host the Humpday Cafe!

FBC Cafe – Humpday Edition

Happy Humpday Tribbers!  It’s a short workweek for many of us and I for one, definitely enjoy the concept of a wednesday that feels like a tuesday but is way closer to friday than tuesdays in general…  Abbott’s special bacon is fryin’ as always – for the west coasters, we’ve got breakfast, and for the more easterly types, well I can make a lovely BLT with fresh heirloom tomatoes.

The Café is up and open for business!

A quick view of the news today, it appears an appeal by HRC and a free stadium for the Mets was not enough to get the 2012 Olympics for NYC.  Now, I am big a sports fan as they come, but does ANYONE (outside of the 3 folks pictured on nytimes.com shreaking with excitement) really give a flying crud?  Do you watch the Olympics?  Do you care where they hold it so long as your back yard isn’t flooded with porto-johns and juiced up, sexually ambiguous Russian swimmers?  Not me.  Just thought I’d ask…  =)

*Small Editorial Note:* Folks, at the request of the FBCers, instead of recommending our FBC diary, add it to your Hotlist, please! I’m thinking we want to keep that slot in the Recommended Diaries section available for important stories for the Boomen and Women. Thank you!

Humpday FBC – Happy Hour Edition

Step on up to the bar, pull up a stool and take a load off, cause it’s time for some mid-week boozin’ and gabbin’ in the bar where everybody knows your name…  err, handle…

Got a Carnacki-esque happy story?  Know any good jokes?  Just need a place to hang for a while?  Well, jump in with the rest of us after the break!  See ya over there.
The order of the day is to unrec the original Cafe and spackle this one up there as it would be rude to take up too much space with this a-political banterfest of ours…

Now who has a good joke?

Humpday FBC is OPEN!

Happy Humpday Tribbers! The Café is running a little late today as management has been swamped at the aspects of his job that don’t involve the internets this morning.  Happily, everything is back on track, the bacon is on the stove and the Wednesday Café is Open for Business!

You all know the rules – in the Café, anything goes, but please remember to tip your server.  Oh, and whatever rules Diane and co. have devised restricting large pics and wide comments and all that still apply.  Unless it’s a really cool picture, then it’s ok.  ðŸ˜‰

Update [2005-6-29 16:1:23 by Abbott]: THIS CAFE HAS MOVED – Please unrec and hop on over to the bar…

Wednesday FBC Happy Hour!!!

Happy Humpday Tribbers!  The coffee’s on, the bacon’s a-fryin’ and the café is open for business.  Eggs Benedict and Chocolate Banana Pancakes (a special request from the Abbottette) are the specials of the day, and the fruit cups with yogurt and granola look lovely, but I can’t vouch for them since I filled up on bacon.

Update [2005-6-22 14:44:4 by Abbott]: BREAKING NEWS!!! Frozen margaritas will be served free of charge for the forseeable future! Step right up!

Update [2005-6-22 14:51:31 by Abbott]: Also, it has come to my attention that Renee from Ohio has melted a giant popsicle only a few threads above the cafe. The bar has a limited supply of paper umbrellas left over from “Mai Tai Night” and will dole them out on a first come, first serve basis.

Also, please note that while breakfast is over, bacon is available all day long.

You all know the rules – in the Café, anything goes, but please remember to tip your server.  Oh, and watch out for Sven, I hear Finns have a tendency to spit on the sidewalks…  or something like that.  =)
