UPDATE November 1, 2006

The fOtofair2006 team would like to thank everyone for making this year’s fair such a success. We are so excited to see such wonderful fOtodiaries, and it’s obvious how many talented photographers frequent the pond. We’d also like to thank the participants over at European Tribune for making the fair a global event. If you haven’t visited all the diaries, please take some time over the next few days (and weeks) to do so.

~~~~~~~
I’d like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank the members of the fotofair2006 team: dada, AndiF, Nag, and Family Man. All contributed in different ways to get this event off the ground and running, and their involvment made the fOtofair a truly cooperative effort. It was a pleasure to work with them all! I’d also like to thank Boo for fostering such a rich community, and for supporting events such as the these. And last but not least, I’d like to thank katiebird, who came up with the photo fair idea in the first place, who coordinated the first ever froggy bottom photo fair, and who provided invaluable input which got us started off on the right foot this year.
Thanks again everyone!
fOtofair2006 is this weekend! Are you ready?
Is everyone ready?
Do you have your photos selected?
Have you figured out the templates?
Do you know when to post your fOtodiary?
We’re getting close now: the fOtofair is this coming weekend. If you answered no to any of those questions, don’t fear! There’s still time to get involved, and the fOtofair team is here to help.
For this final diary, we’ll post the links to all the previous diaries, take a look at next steps and what to expect this w/e, and open the diary to any questions and/or comments.
Next Steps
  • You’ve selected your photos and uploaded to your photohost. Not yet? See here for info on photohosts [link].
  • You’ve created your clickable thumbnails. Not yet? Click here for instructions on how to create clickable thumbnails [link].
  • You may have created photo comment templates for each of your photos and saved them to a text file. Not yet? If you haven’t tried out the template yet, feel free to practice in the comments section below. Here’s a link to the template diary [link].
  • When you create your fOtodiary on the day of the fair, you’ll need to use the first template (Diary Template or the one with the red box). Click here for the diary template [link]. Don’t forget to add your own title and tell us a little something about your fOtodiary, such as when and where the photos were taken or the equipment used, etc.
  • On the day of the fair, after you’ve posted your fOtodiary and added your photos (so your diary is complete and ready for visitors :), send us the link to make sure your fOtodiary is added to the master diary. Send to the fOtofair2006 email with YourUsername in the subject line.
  • If you need help with any aspect of your diary, at any point, don’t hesitate to send an SOS: Email us!
What to Expect
  • Feel free to post your diary any time starting on Saturday October 28th — there is no specific starting time.
  • If you run into any problems while creating your diary, don’t panic! Send us an email or post your question in the cafe and together we’ll figure it out. 🙂
  • If you would like to post a diary but are worried about creating thumbnails or templates, please send us an email. We want to make sure that everyone who wishes to participate, does!
  • The fOtofair team will create a master diary that links to everyone’s fOtodiaries. We hope to have this diary recommended so that it’s on the rec list. Individual diaries should not be recommended. We know that this goes against the BT spirit, but we don’t want fOtodiaries taking up all of the slots on the rec lists. So, leave comments and 4s in lieu of recommends please!
Questions and Comments
We’ve provided a lot of details up-front this year in the hopes that people might learn something that could be used outside the fOtofair, such as posting photos online and using html. Hopefully we haven’t confused you.
So, that’s it. This has been an iterative process, building on last year’s fair, so any comments on what has worked or hasn’t would be helpful. The floor is now open to any questions, comments, or suggestions with one final request, and the most important of all:
Have fun with it!
fOtofair2006v4.0: Diary layout, templates, recap, next steps
We’re back!
This time we’ll look at creating the actual fOtofair diary, including where-to and how-to insert your clickable thumbnails. If you’ve missed any of the previous diaries, check them out here. We’ll also take stock and do a Recap, and then look at Next Steps.
Diary Layout
For those who were around last year, you’ll find that we’ve kept both the layout and the templates the same, with only a few tweaks to the font and colour, and of course the logo.
Where-to
The fOtodiary consists of a small introduction box in the main diary section, and the actual photos posted in the comments section. Take a look at Indianadem’s diary from last year to see the overall dairy layout.
There are two templates used to create the fOtodiary, one for the introduction box (Diary Template), and one for the photos (Photo Comment Template), both of which are described below.
To create your fOtodiary, copy the Diary Template code and paste that in the main diary section, replace the example title and short description, and hit ‘Submit.’
When your diary has been created, you add your photos as you would regular comments. Copy the Photo Comment Template and paste into the comment box, replace the example with your clickable thumbnail link, photo title, and description.
We’ll take a look at both of the templates and walk through each step in more detail below.
Diary Template
Template Code
<– Begin Photo Template Code –>
<div style=”border: thin solid red; padding: 15px; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans serif; font-size: small; margin-left: 2%; width: 80%;”><table><tr><td><img src=”http://tinyurl.com/ynf8gy”></td><td>&nbsp;</td><td><b>Your
Title</b><p>Your descriptive text here.</td></tr></table></div>
<– End Photo Template Code –>
How-to
  1. Copy the code as follows: Select everything between the <– Begin etc. –> and <– End etc. –> markers, so from beginning of <div style …> to end of </div>.
  2. Paste this code into the BT ‘Intro Copy’ box (the top one) of your fOtodiary.
  3. Locate ‘Your Title’ in the code, and type your own title over this.
  4. Locate ‘Your descriptive text here.’ in the code, and type your own descriptive blurb over this.
  5. Make sure that you have formatting set to ‘HTML formatted.’
  6. Enter your diary title using the format: fOtofair2006 YourUsername
  7. Important! Preview before posting to make sure the template displays correctly, and that the text fits within the box. If it looks good, hit submit.
  8. Once your diary is posted you will find it on the Recent Diaries list. Click on it to open, and begin adding your photos as you would regular text comments (see next section: Photo Comment Template).
  9. This is an example of what the diary section should look like:
::
Photo Comment Template
The photo template is where you will post your clickable thumbnails. They are posted as individual comments to your fOtofair diary in the comments section. Post one photo per comment, which will give you a maximum of 10 comments per diary. (Remember that the maximum number of photos per diary is 10. You may post a total of 4 diaries – 2 per day – over the course of the fOtofair.)
We recommend that when you create your photo comment templates, you save them to a text file. That way, you can work on them now and have your diary ready to go — instead of doing all the work the day of the fair.
Template Code
<– Begin Photo Template Code –>
<TABLE border=”1″ cellpadding=”7″><TR><TD><a href=”http://www.LARGE_PHOTO_CODE.jpg”><img border=”0″ src=”http://www.thumbnail_code.jpg”></a></td><td><b>Your Title Here</b><p>Add a description of your photo here.<p><i>Click image for larger version.</i></td></tr></table>
<– End Photo Template Code –>
How-to
  1. Copy the code as follows: Select everything between the <– Begin etc. –> and <– End etc. –> markers, so from beginning of <TABLE …> to end of </table>.
  2. Paste this code into a text file (if creating your diary ahead of time) or the BT comment box.
  3. Copy the code for the clickable thumbnail you have created, and paste that over the example in the above code.
  4. Locate ‘Your Title Here’ in the code, and type your own title over this.
  5. Locate ‘Add a description of your photo here.’ in the code, and type your own description over this.
  6. Enter your comment title using the format: fOtofair2006 YourUsername
  7. Important! Preview before posting to make sure the template displays correctly, and that the photo appears and the link works. If the thumbnail and text fit within the box and the link opens when clicked, hit post.
fOtofair2006v3.0: Creating clickable thumbnails
Hello! In this installment we’re creating clickable thumbnails for the three photo hosts recommended in the last fOtofair diary. Thumbnail files are smaller and this allows the diaries to load quickly (which is important for BTers on dial-up), while offering access to higher resolution images. Check out the great explanation of clickable thumbnail links written by ejmw.
Once again, we welcome your questions and feedback. Please feel free to practice creating clickable thumbnails in the comments section below. Most of all, have fun!
Please recommend this diary so that everyone has a chance to read it. To find the most up-to-date diary when it has fallen of the rec list, check out the froggy bottom cafe which posts a link on the virtual bulletin board.
To make this diary more manageable, click on the photo host site you are using to jump to that particular section of the diary.
Photobucket | Flickr | Imageshack
::
Photobucket
Photobucket, like ImageShack, generates clickable thumbnails automatically. There are a few different variations of html code produced for use on different forums, blogs, etc., so you have to manipulate the code a bit for it to work at BT.
To create clickable thumbnails:
Upload your photo.
Select the photo you want to make thumbnail for by checking the little box underneath each image.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to locate the button Generate HTML and IMG code and click.
For BT, copy the code in the first box labelled HTML clickable thumbnails for Ebay, Livejournal, MySpace, etc..
Paste the code into the comment box at BT or a text file.
BT does not allow some code, so we have to remove that part before the clickable photo will work. Remove the following bits:
alt=”XXX”
target=”blank”
<center> </center> codes
This is what the final clickable thumbnail code should look like:
<a href=”http://www.LARGE_PHOTO_CODE.jpg”><img src=”http://www.thumbnail_code.jpg”></a>
Important! Before posting, test to make sure the photo appears and the link works by previewing the comment and clicking on the thumbnail. If the thumbnail displays and the link opens, then hit post.
::
Flickr
Unlike Photobucket and Imageshack which generate clickable thumbnails automatically, you have to manually create them in Flickr. It’s not difficult to do — just a matter of copying and pasting the urls for both the thumbnail and the large photo.
To create clickable thumbnails:
Upload your photo.
Select the photo you want to make the clickable thumbnail for by clicking on the button All Sizes on top of the photo.
A new page will open where you can then select the size of photo and corresponding code. To make the clickable thumbnail you will have to copy two sizes: the thumbnail and the large photo.
Select the large size photo to get the code, which will be displayed below the image at the bottom of the page.
Copy the code in Option 2 (Grab the photo’s URL) and paste to the BT comment box or a text file.
Next, select the thumbnail photo to display the code. Copy the code in Option 2 and paste in the BT comment box or text file.
Combine the two codes to create the clickable thumbnail as follows:
<a href=”http://www.PASTE_LARGE_PHOTO_CODE_HERE.jpg”><img src=”http://www.paste_thumbnail_code_here.jpg”></a>
Important! Before posting, test to make sure the photo appears and the link works by previewing the comment and clicking on the thumbnail. If the thumbnail displays and the link opens, then hit post.
::
ImageShack
ImageShack, like Photobucket, generates clickable thumbnails automatically. There are a few different variations of html code produced for use on different forums, blogs, etc., so you have to manipulate the code a bit for it to work at BT. Also, we’ve found that the link that opens to the large sized photo with the auto generated thumbnail has a banner ad running across the top of the page. For some BT users running Macs, this ad caused their web browser to crash. Because of this, we’ll walk through setting up the clickable thumbnail linking to an ad-free large photo.
To create thumbnails:
Upload your photo.
We recommend that when you upload your photo you select the box that turns off the size/resolution bar for thumbnails. This black bar is a small strip that runs along the bottom of the thumbnail photo, and identifies the height, width, and size (in kbs) of the large photo. To turn off the size/resolution bar click the little check box:
Click on photo, and on the next page locate the code for thumbnails. Copy that code into the comment box at BT or a text file.
Next, locate the large photo code that will give you the ad-free photo.
You need to paste the large photo code into the autogenerated thumbnail code. Use the following as a guide:
<a href=”http://www.PASTE_LARGE_PHOTO_CODE_HERE.jpg”><img src=”http://www.thumbnail_code.jpg”></a>
BT does not allow some code, so we have to remove that part before the clickable thumbnail will work. Remove the following bits:
target=”blank”
alt=”XXX” (if present)
Important! Before posting, test to make sure the photo appears and the link works by previewing the comment and clicking on the thumbnail. If the thumbnail displays and the link opens, then hit post.
fOtofair2006v2.0: Submission Criteria & fOtohosts
Greeting’s, once again, from the fOtofair team. We’ve been busy putting together the criteria for this years fair, and today, we’re also going to delve into the wonderful world of fOto-hosting sites.
Before we get started, thanks again for all the responses to the Launch Diary and for your votes and volunteering…we will be in touch.
As you can see, the date selected was October 28-29, with a submission deadline of 21 October for those needing help with creating diaries…more on that later, but props to all!
Please stand on the moving yellow line…and repeat after me…
Submission Requirements:
    All submittals must be:
    ORIGINAL work
    B&W, colour, and manipulated, ie: photoshopped, images
        are included
    NO VIDEOS
    Maximum photos per diary: 10. HTML Primers are below and
        Posting templates and details will be in the next
        communique.
Simple, eh? Thought so…Now the fun stuff
fOtohosting Sites:
Weeks, days, hours
, OK, a few minutes of exhaustive research and testing, have identified the three major hosting sites most often used by the denizens at BT…Photobucket, Flickr, and ImageShack.  If you haven’t yet signed up for one of these, we offer the following information to, hopefully, assist you in your quest. BTW, they’re all FREE!
Photobucket:
The first, most popular, and, in the not so humble opinion of some fOtofair team members, best site. Easy to use, lots of storage: 1G, multiple image uploading, easy editing, creates thumbnails [more on that next time], excellent privacy controls, and lots of good tutorials and forums for assistance. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Flickr:
The second place finisher, has lots going for it. Easy to use, automatically resizes photos, good privacy controls…the works. Requires a Yahoo ID but, it has a fairly restrictive upload requirement…20Mb/month…very easy to burn thru.
ImageShack:
Very similiar to photobucket with the notable exception of some difficulties with the thumbnail links, and their attendant ads, which cause some browsers to crash, most noticeably, Mac OSX2.8/Safari. We have been unable to test it w/ later V’s such as OSX3.9 or 4, and would appreciate any input re: it’s efficacy with those.
A fourth site, kind of the new kid on the block, is Zooomr. Very similiar to Flickr, with more bells and whistles, and lots more storage. But, very buggy on Macs, again, OSX2.8…so if you’ve tried it, or try it, w/ a later version of OSX, please chime in as it looks very promising.
And, just for FYI purposes, here’s a list, not inclusive, of other hosting sites that we’ve id’d. Again, any insight you might have regarding these or others, is encouraged:
    Picturetrail
    Alternatives
That’s all we got for now, the next installment will be devoted to HTML, How to do Thumbnails, and the template for posting your fOto diaries. For those of you wishing to read ahead for extra credit, RenaRF’s excellent HTML 101 @ MLW is Highly Recommended. [Hope that’s ok MSOC, and all the wingers are invited to participate!] as is Superscalar’s outstanding: How’d Boo do that?
Questions, comments and all input is encouraged and requested.
Please Recommend this diary so it may reach everyone who may be interested
Thanks, we will be back.
[Updated] fOtofair2006
Update [2006-9-16 0:32:14 by fOtofair2006]:
Thank you everyone for voting, volunteering, and expressing interest!
Based on the results of the poll, the date of fOtofair2006 will be October 28-29.
We’ll post a dairy next week with more details, including diary guidelines and photo hosting sites, so stay tuned!
(Original diary below the fold)
::
OK, all you photogs out there…It’s fall again and time for the second annual FrOggy BOttom fOtofair.
The leaves are turning, the gardens are starting to go dormant and thoughts have once again turned to…what am I going to do now?
Well, if we may be so bold as to suggest, what if you gather up all those great photographs that you’ve taken, and those that’ll happen in the next few weeks, and share them with the rest of the Pond Dwellers.
A group of your friendly neighbourhood frogs have been thinking about it, and with the help of BooMan, Dada, Olivia, AndiF, and Katiebird…the mastermind behind the great inaugural version…have a few ideas.
Follow along and let’s get started…
Last years Fair drew over 30 submissions from Tribbers world wide; given that the site membership has more than doubled, we hope to receive many more this year. But the first order of business is to gauge the level of interest here, and at our sister site ET, and settle on a date.
Two potential dates have been identified; the first: October 28 – 29; the second November 18 -19. Submissions from those who need help with posting and creating Diaries would be required a week earlier so that volunteers can do the coding work required to make sure that they’re all included. This will, by necessity, have to be a hard date as late submittals created a bottleneck last year.
Further information on photo hosting sites, templates, HTML primers, questions and assistance, submission requirements/guidelines will be next.
So sign in, sign up, let us know if you’re interested in participating and/or volunteering, and show us your best work.
Please Recommend this Diary so as many people as possible may see it.
Thanks
