Syrian Civil War – Endgame In Idlib? [Update]

Will the West accept defeat in their attempt to overthrow Bashar Assad?
Will the Atlantic Alliance and NATO concede the intrusion of Russia/China/Iran in their backyard?

Will Netanyahu’s rightwing government keep quiet in the coming weeks or intervene in Syrian politics?

[Update] See my new diary – Fucking Israelis Stirring Up Big Trouble

Will Germany’s Merkel show military muscle to play the game with the “Big Boys” to keep her chance for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council?
Will Russia especially and Syria use the Idlib Battle for a lethal blow to the foreign jihadists holed up with no place to go?
Will Turkey manage to keep the border shut for Syrian civilians in the fear of letting terrorists into their country?
The US, UK, France and NATO allies are ready to make a devastating bombing campaign over Syria. Germany is willing to do their part although 75% of its citizens are opposed to intervene militarily.

One thing is guaranteed, lots of PROPAGANDA coming your way the coming days and weeks about the END GAME in Syria.

A worthy panel discussion on DW this morning … I particularly liked the views and responses during the show. These realistic views are too few and far in between in the European media, especially the UK, France and in The Netherlands.

Battle for Idlib: Endgame in Syria?

Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad and his allies are getting ready for a final assault on the last rebel stronghold in the country, Idlib. The city is home to an estimated three million people and many observers fear a slaughter of civilians. Guests: Maissun Melhem (DW), Michael Lüders (Middle East Expert), Alan Posener (Die Welt)

Russian warships lurking off Syria are probably hanging around for cruise missile strikes in a major offensive

Unless the Russian navy is hunting for the Red October in the eastern Mediterranean, it is likely that so many Russian ships have remained there since the end of Moscow’s latest naval exercise primarily to support Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, Pentagon officials said.

  • More than a dozen Russian ships have massed close to Syria, and many of those vessels are equipped with KALIBR cruise missiles, Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said.
  • “The question remains, then, why is Russia’s naval presence still elevated in the region?” Pahon told Task & Purpose. “Is there another reason?”
  • The Assad regime is currently poised to launch a massive assault against rebel-held Idlib province and Russian ships have previously launched cruise missiles in support of the Syrian regime.

US: ‘Lots of evidence’ Assad planning chemical attack | Arutz Sheva |

Jim Jeffrey, the new US representative for Syria, said on Thursday there is “lots of evidence” that chemical weapons are being prepared by Syrian government forces in Idlib region in northwest Syria.

Jeffrey warned that any attack on the last big rebel enclave would be a “reckless escalation,” reported the Reuters news agency.

“I am very sure that we have very, very good grounds to be making these warnings. Any offensive is to us objectionable as a reckless escalation,” Jeffrey told reporters. “There is lots of evidence that chemical weapons are being prepared.”

Jeffrey said any offensive by Russian and Syrian forces, and the use of chemical weapons, would force huge refugee flows into southeastern Turkey or areas in Syria under Turkish control.

Jeffrey described the situation in Idlib as “very dangerous” and said that Turkey, which has backed some rebel groups in the region, was trying to avoid an all-out Syrian government offensive.

You “progressives” on this blog, US citizens and its western allies have been LIED to and clouded by military propaganda from their governments. How many deaths did these criminal acts cause in Syria by extending the civil unrest. How many civilians have fled their homes and millions crossed into Europe causing an “immigration” issue which led directly to a conservative movement of white supremacy and a strong shift to right-wing politics across Europe.

It’s all there for you to read in the archives of European Tribune and @BooMan. I have not been fooled.

Pick-up trucks and uniforms

The investigation also shows that the Netherlands supplied Toyota Hilux and Isuzu D-max pick-up trucks to Syrian rebels, among other things. The Netherlands also sent uniforms, satellite telephones, laptops, mattresses, backpacks and cameras. The rebels tell Nieuwsuur and Trouw that they are very satisfied with the Dutch help and that they are already using the goods received by the Netherlands in the armed struggle.

More below the fold …

On video images that the rebel groups supported by the Netherlands put on their YouTube channels, you can see how they use the type of pick-up truck that the Netherlands supplied by fixing machine guns and shooting their targets from the truck. It is not possible to check whether the trucks controlled by the Netherlands have actually been used for this lethal purpose because the pick-ups are not provided with a distinguishing mark.

The Public Prosecutor confirms that she is currently prosecuting a Dutch man for participation in Jabhat al-Shamiya in 2015. The OM also confirms that she has labeled Jabhat al-Shamiya as terrorist in this case. The Public Prosecution Service maintains its position and continues the prosecution. She does not want to discuss the policy of Foreign Affairs. The OM also states that it assesses groups of warriors per criminal case and does not make statements about periods that fall outside a case.

Dutch taxpayers’ money to jihadists killing Syrian Kurdish children

… from 2016 to the beginning of 2018 the Netherlands supported the Sultan Murad Brigade with pick-up trucks and uniforms, while this brigade was guilty of war crimes in the same period, according to human rights organizations.

The brigade deployed child soldiers in the battle and was actively involved in attacks on the Sheikh Maqsoud Kurdish district, killing 83 civilians, including 30 children. The Dutch Division of Defense Division 13 also participated in these attacks on Kurdish civilians.

The Netherlands promised to carefully select the groups and stop the support if there were signs of human rights violations or other ‘undesirable behavior’. But support to groups such as the Sultan Murad Brigade continued – despite public warnings from, among others, the UN Human Rights Council – until the beginning of 2018.

Dutch propaganda … now admittedly this was false news, not telling Dutch parliament as the facts were on the ground in Syria.

Netherlands stops supporting Syrian aid project over suspected extremist ties | Dutch Times – Dec. 2017 |

The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs temporarily halted the Netherlands’ support for an aid project in Syria due to concerns that some of the money ended up with extremist groups. Since 2014 the Netherlands contributed 12.6 million euros to the Access to Justice and Community Security Project, which includes the Free Syrian Police, AD reports.

The Free Syrian Police is an unarmed police service set up after the start of the civil war in the country. The aim is to provide ‘peace and justice’ in areas controlled by the Syrian opposition. The Free Syrian Police is supported by the Access to Justice and Community Security Project. The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Great Britain are among the six Western countries that contributed millions to the project over the past years, according to the newspaper.

The project came under fire this week after British television program BBC Panorama reported that extremist group Nour al-Din al-Zinki forced the Free Syrian Police in the Aleppo region to transfer 20 percent of its salaries to the group, because they protected the five police stations in the region. According to the BBC, this happened until 2016.

The program also reported that in another region the Al Nusra front, which is linked to al-Qaeda, chose officers for the Free Police. According to the BBC, these officers also cooperated with courts that imposed executions and stoning as punishment. A man told the BBC that members of the Free Syrian Police were aware of torture happening in the prison where he was detained.

The Dawn of Mass Jihad: Success in Syria Fuels al-Qa’ida’s Evolution – Sept. 2016

Jabhat al-Nusra’s decision to decouple itself from its external affiliations and to rebrand itself as Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (JFS) is merely the latest move in the organization’s ‘long game’ in Syria. Though its Syrian audience has praised the move thus far, the group has also lost several senior leaders who were unhappy at the disengagement from al-Qa’ida. Al-Qa’ida is itself increasingly evolving into an idea adopted and empowered by largely autonomous affiliates whose individual strategies have become explicitly local. Consequently, JFS represents a formidable movement in Syria, whose localist focus should be seen as a harbinger of a new era of more broadly supported, more sustainable and, thus, more dangerous jihadist militancy.

After a series of coordinated leaks and media releases, Jabhat al-Nusra announced on July 28, 2016, that it had dissolved all “external” ties and “in serving the people of al-Sham” had renamed itself Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, or the Front for the Conquest of the Levant. The group’s leader, Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa (Abu Mohammed al-Julani), revealed his face for the first time as part of this consequential rebranding exercise that was aimed at distinguishing his movement’s activities in Syria from those of the transnational al-Qa’ida organization. Situated at either side of al-Julani during his video statement, however, were his chief aide and sharia official Abdulrahim Attoun (Abu Abdulrahman al-Shami) and jihadist veteran figure and former confidante of al-Qa’ida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, Ahmed Salameh Mabrouk (Abu Faraj al-Masri).

John Bolton threatens International war crimes court (ICC) with sanctions in virulent attack

Bolton vowed that the United States would retaliate by banning ICC judges and prosecutors from entering the US, imposing sanctions on any funds they had in the States and prosecuting them in the American court system.

“If the court comes after us, Israel, or other US allies we will not sit quietly,” he said, also threatening to impose the same sanctions on any country that aided the investigation.

He condemned the inquiry into war crimes in Afghanistan as an “utterly unfounded, unjustifiable investigation” and the court as illegitimate.

“We will let the ICC die on its own. After all, for all intents and purposes, the ICC is already dead,” Bolton said.

He said the US would negotiate more binding, bilateral agreements to prohibit countries from surrendering Americans to the court in The Hague.

David Scheffer, who established the ICC on behalf of the US and served as the country’s ambassador-at-large for war crimes issues, said: “The Bolton speech today isolates the United States from international criminal justice and severely undermines our leadership in bringing perpetrators of atrocity crimes to justice elsewhere in the world.

“The double standard set forth in his speech will likely play well with authoritarian regimes, which will resist accountability for atrocity crimes and ignore international efforts to advance the rule of law. This was a speech soaked in fear and Bolton sounded the message, once again, that the United States is intimidated by international law and multilateral organizations. I saw not strength but weakness conveyed today by the Trump Administration.”

The senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat confirmed that a US official had notified the Palestinian leadership that its diplomatic mission in Washington DC would be closed.

The End of Exceptionalism in War Crimes by David Scheffer - Harvard Issue Nov. 2007

Exceptionalism may have a place in international politics, but this concept has run its course in the sphere of international criminal justice. No nation should ignore its duty to bring war criminals to justice or otherwise shield its own leaders or soldiers from charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, or war crimes. The rule of law debacles in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantanamo have been the death-knell of exceptionalism in the war crimes business.

Reality is knocking and its name is the permanent International Criminal Court (ICC). Any claim that the US may have to moral high ground in foreign policy necessarily requires that the United States join the ICC and do so relatively soon. The United States needs the ICC to help restore its global credibility, discipline its own decision-making, and strengthen judicial intervention against atrocity crimes.

Reject and Punish

In recent years, the United States has lost not only its leadership in the field of international law but has also crippled its own national interests and foreign policy objectives. The descent into a yawning credibility gap can be traced back to 2001, even before 9/11, and the Bush administration’s rejection of the ICC, the Kyoto Protocol, and multilateralism writ large. These decisions were based on a mindset deeply skeptical and dismissive of international law.

I reside in The Hague, a stone’s throw away from the International Criminal Court. Should I be afraid of the U.S Congress legislation called the “The Hague Invasion Act?” I fear not!

FBI Agents tried to flip Russian oligarch Deripaska to get to Trump | The New York Times |

In the estimation of American officials, Oleg V. Deripaska, a Russian oligarch with close ties to the Kremlin, has faced credible accusations of extortion, bribery and even murder.

They also thought he might make a good source.

Between 2014 and 2016, the F.B.I. and the Justice Department unsuccessfully tried to turn Mr. Deripaska into an informant.

More below the fold …

The attempt to flip Mr. Deripaska was part of a broader, clandestine American effort to gauge the possibility of gaining cooperation from roughly a half-dozen of Russia’s richest men …

Two of the players in the effort were Bruce G. Ohr, the Justice Department official who has recently become a target of attacks by Mr. Trump, and Christopher Steele, the former British spy who compiled a dossier of purported links between the Trump campaign and Russia.

The systematic effort to win the cooperation of the oligarchs, which has not previously been revealed, does not appear to have scored any successes. And in Mr. Deripaska’s case, he told the American investigators that he disagreed with their theories about Russian organized crime and Kremlin collusion in the campaign, a person familiar with the exchanges said.

The person added that Mr. Deripaska even notified the Kremlin about the American efforts to cultivate him.

The outreach to Mr. Deripaska, who is so close to the Russian president that he has been called “Putin’s oligarch,” was not as much of a long shot as it might have appeared. He had worked with the United States government in the past, including on a thwarted effort to rescue an F.B.I. agent [Robert A. Levinson] captured in Iran, on which he reportedly spent as much as $25 million of his own money.

The timeline sketched out by Mr. Ohr shows contacts stretching back to when Mr. Ohr first met Mr. Steele in 2007. It also shows what officials said was the first date on which the two discussed cultivating Mr. Deripaska: a meeting in Washington on Nov. 21, 2014, roughly seven months before Mr. Trump announced that he was running for president.

Mr. Steele served as an intermediary between the Americans and the Russian oligarchs they were seeking to cultivate. He had first met Mr. Ohr years earlier while still serving at MI6, Britain’s foreign spy agency, where he oversaw Russia operations.

Mr. Steele helped set up a meeting between the Russian and American officials during the 2015 trip. Mr. Ohr attended the meeting, during which the Americans pressed Mr. Deripaska on the connections between Russian organized crime and Mr. Putin’s government, as well as other issues, according to a person familiar with the events. The person said that Mr. Deripaska told the Americans that their theories were off base and did not reflect how things worked in Russia.

Mr. Deripaska would not agree to a second meeting. But one took place the following year, in September 2016, when F.B.I. agents showed up unannounced at his door in New York.

Mr. Deripaska, though, told the F.B.I. agents that while he had no love for Mr. Manafort, with whom he was in a bitter business dispute, he found their theories about his role on the campaign “preposterous.” He also disputed that there were any connections between the Trump campaign and Russia, according to the person familiar with the exchange.

Mueller may have a conflict — and it leads directly to Deripaska | The Hill – May 14, 2018 |

In 2009, when Mueller ran the FBI, the bureau asked Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska [NYT] to spend millions of his own dollars funding an FBI-supervised operation to rescue a retired FBI agent, Robert Levinson, captured in Iran while working for the CIA in 2007.

Some aspects of Deripaska’s help were chronicled in a 2016 book by reporter Barry Meier, but sources provide extensive new information about his role.

They said FBI agents courted Deripaska in 2009 in a series of secret hotel meetings in Paris; Vienna; Budapest, Hungary, and Washington. Agents persuaded the aluminum industry magnate to underwrite the mission. The Russian billionaire insisted the operation neither involve nor harm his homeland.

“We knew he was paying for his team helping us, and that probably ran into the millions,” a U.S. official involved in the operation confirmed.

Before long, he [Levinson] was retained by the CIA to assist a new unit focusing on illicit international finance, a group that found his comprehensive reports educational and invaluable. By 2006, the Illicit Finance Group had been tasked to gather intel that could be used against the leaders of Iran, and when that responsibility was passed on to Levinson, he made the risky journey to meet an American-born terrorist, an assignment from which he never returned. [Source: The American Spy Who Vanished in Iran]

One agent who helped court Deripaska was Andrew McCabe, the recently fired FBI deputy director who played a seminal role starting the Trump-Russia case, multiple sources confirmed.

Deripaska’s lawyer said the Russian ultimately spent $25 million assembling a private search and rescue team that worked with Iranian contacts under the FBI’s watchful eye. Photos and videos indicating Levinson was alive were uncovered.

Then in fall 2010, the operation secured an offer to free Levinson. The deal was scuttled, however, when the State Department become uncomfortable with Iran’s terms, according to Deripaska’s lawyer and the Levinson family.

FBI officials confirmed State hampered their efforts.

Project Cassandra reached higher into the hierarchy of the conspiracy | Politico – Dec. 2017 |

By May 2010, Brennan, then assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, confirmed in a speech that the administration was looking for ways to build up “moderate elements” within Hezbollah.

“Hezbollah is a very interesting organization,” Brennan told a Washington conference, saying it had evolved from “purely a terrorist organization” to a militia and, ultimately, a political party with representatives in the Lebanese Parliament and Cabinet, according to a Reuters report.

“There is certainly the elements of Hezbollah that are truly a concern to us what they’re doing,” Brennan said. “And what we need to do is to find ways to diminish their influence within the organization and to try to build up the more moderate elements.”

In practice, the administration’s willingness to envision a new role for Hezbollah in the Middle East, combined with its desire for a negotiated settlement to Iran’s nuclear program, translated into a reluctance to move aggressively against the top Hezbollah operatives, according to Project Cassandra members and others.

US supplied bomb that killed 40 children on Yemen school bus | The Guardian |

The bomb dropped on a school bus in Yemen by a Saudi-led coalition warplane was sold to Riyadh by the US, according to reports based on analysis of the debris.

The 9 August attack killed 40 boys aged from six to 11 who were being taken on a school trip. Eleven adults also died and local authorities said 79 people were wounded, 56 of them children. CNN reported that the weapon used was a 227kg laser-guided bomb made by Lockheed Martin, one of many thousands sold to Saudi Arabia as part of billions of dollars of weapons exports.

Continued below the fold …

The Gulf monarchy is the biggest single customer for both the US and UK arms industries. The US also supports the coalition with refueling and intelligence.

The investigative journalism site Bellingcat identified bomb fragments, on photographs and videos taken soon after the bombing, as coming from a laser-guided version of a Mk-82 bomb called a GBU-12 Paveway II. Based on marking on a fin segment of the bomb, Bellingcat traced the bomb to a shipment of a thousand of such bombs to Saudi Arabia, approved by the state department in 2015, during the Obama administration.

A spokesperson for Lockheed Martin referred questions about the bombing to the Pentagon. The defense department has said it does not make tactical targeting decision for the Saudi-led coalition but does provide support to improve targeting.

The Obama administration offered Saudi Arabia more than $115bn in weapons in the course of its two four-year terms, more than any previous US administration, according to a report in 2016.

After the bombing of a funeral hall in October 2016, which killed 155 people, Obama halted the sale of guided munition technology to Saudi Arabia, on the grounds that improved precision would not save civilian lives if the Saudi-led coalition were not taking care to avoid hitting non-military targets. The sales were reinstated by the Trump administration’s first secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, in March 2017.

Brennan: “I admire Gina Haspel and I want her to stay as head of the CIA …”

Record of John Brennan who served under Presidents George Bush and Barack Obama. Mr. John Brennan in 2005 [cached]:

To ensure a more comprehensive accounting of terrorist incidents, we in the NCTC significantly increased the level of effort from three part-time individuals to 10 full-time analysts, and we took a number of other steps to improve quality control and database management. This increased level of effort allowed a much deeper review of far more information and, along with Iraq, are the primary reasons for the significant growth in a number of terrorist incidents being reported.

Now, this increase in the number of incidents being reported today does not necessarily mean that there has been a growth in actual terrorist incidents. In other words, the data you will see today represent a break from previous years, and the numbers can’t be compared to previous years in any meaningful way. This point was made to congressional staffers earlier this week, but has not been accurately captured in the various press articles over the past couple of days.

Now, second. In our scrub of last year’s data, it became increasingly clear that there were methodological problems associated with statutory language and counting rules. These criteria dated to a period of focus on state-sponsored terrorism in the early 1980s and not the transnational phenomena we confront now. I will discuss some of these methodological problems and what we’re doing to improve the process of accounting for global terrorist incidents. I would like to first turn to our charts. Using the statutory criteria found in Title 22, Section 2656-F of the U.S. Code, along with counting rules that were provided to the National Counterterrorism Center, we compiled data on 651 attacks that met the criteria for significant international terrorist incidents. Now, there are several points of note. As you can see on the left-hand side, there were over 9,000 victims of significant international terrorism last year, of which 1,907 were killed. On the right-hand side, you can see the regional breakdown of total attacks and the relative share of the 1,907 individuals killed.

Now, a couple of points of note. Much has been made in the press about Kashmir and clearly there was, on average, an attack nearly every day in Kashmir. In fact, there were a total of 284 attacks in Kashmir that met the statutory criteria for significant terrorist incidents. Now, the total number of people killed in South Asia was about 500. In other words, the attacks were often conducted against one or two people. By contrast, there were very few attacks in Europe – it’s represented here on the blue bar, in Europe — but there was a very high death toll. This reflects the very deadly attacks in places like Madrid and Beslan, Russia, where many hundreds of people were killed in single incidents.

As you can see in the lower left-hand corner, the methodology, chronology, and selected statistical charts are being posted and are already posted on www.tkb.org. This is the website for the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism in Oklahoma City, and we are most appreciative of the institute for partnering with us to make the data available to the American public.

Now, the next chart. This second chart reflects the subset of significant international attacks conducted against U.S. interests. As you can see on the left, 64 attacks, approximately 10 percent of the total number of attacks worldwide, were conducted against U.S. interests. The vast majority of these anti-U.S. attacks took place in the Middle East, where 83 percent of those attacks occurred. As you can see on the pie charts on the right-hand side of the briefing board, a far lower percentage of U.S. citizens were actually wounded or killed. Of the roughly 9,300 individuals wounded in significant international terrorist incidents, 103 were Americans. Total U.S. victims: 103. And of the more than 1,800 people killed last year in significant international terrorist incidents, 68 were Americans.

Terrorist Attacks and Deaths in 2017

In 2017, there were 10,900 terrorist attacks around the world, which killed more than 26,400 people, including 8,075 perpetrators and 18,488 victims. The patterns described here provide a very general overview. We encourage readers to explore the Global Terrorism Database and consider contextual information for a comprehensive assessment. The year 2017 marks the third consecutive year of declining numbers of terrorist attacks and deaths worldwide, since terrorist violence peaked in 2014 at nearly 17,000 attacks and more than 45,000 total deaths.

Tulsi Gabbard – Congresswoman Representing Hawaii

BT not a place for a balanced view or a fair debate … do the research yourself!

The views of parts of the Democratic Party are closer to John McCain on intervention in Syria and support of global jihadists. The legacy of the Obama administration on regime change of sovereign nations in MENA will rival the eights years under George Bush after 9/11. The aftermath is devastation, suffering and unintended consequences: the Islamic State of Iran gaining influence in Iraq and Syria.

Tulsi Gabbard is clearly not mainstream by Democrats today … I know too little about her and certainly do not approve of all her individual actions.

More below the fold …

Why is Daily Kos Lying About Tulsi’s Record on Progressive Issues?

There have been multiple diaries written on Daily Kos regurgitating the same tired criticisms of Tulsi that have no actual basis in her voting record, positions, personal integrity and aloha for all people. In order to look at any individual in public office clearly, we need to be looking at the actual facts, not rumor/innuendo. I’ve been very concerned by the way political opponents of Tulsi have tried to distort her record and in many, cases, accuse her of the exact opposite of what her actual record is. One has to wonder what is the motivation behind that kind of dishonesty. That said, here is a point by point response to the accusations being bandied against her

Accusation #1: Islamophobic

Saying someone is Islamophobic is an extremely negative thing to say about them, in the same vein as calling someone sexist, racist, bigoted, etc. It conjures up a very negative image. To use words like “bigot, Islamophobe, racist, etc” untruthfully can only be called a smear of the lowest kind. The facts show this underhanded accusation is completely baseless …

An Islamophobic Progressive? | Socialist Worker |

U.S. REP. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii has again catapulted herself into the national spotlight by joining the mobilization of veterans to Standing Rock to stand in solidarity with the water protectors against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

This act of solidarity seems to go with other pieces of evidence that mark her as a progressive: her resignation as vice chair of the Democratic National Committee over the rigging of the Democratic primaries for Hillary Clinton; her endorsement of Bernie Sanders’ left-wing primary campaign; her opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership economic agreement.

Yet many liberals were befuddled by Gabbard’s decision, just before going to Standing Rock, to interview with Donald Trump, apparently in the hopes of securing an appointment to his administration. CNN reported last month that the bigoted billionaire president-elect is considering her for positions in “the Defense Department, State Department and the United Nations.”

Tulsi Gabbard: how a progressive rising star is a paradox for the left | The Guardian – Aug. 13, 2018 |

Tulsi Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran who made history in 2012 as the first Hindu elected to the US Congress, has cemented herself as a rising star within the Democratic party.

At 21, she was the youngest person to be elected to the Hawaii state Legislature. Then she set her sights on the military.

“In 2003, I felt the need to do more with my life and to do more in the way of service,” she said. “I remember sitting in my office watching the Saddam Hussein statue topple [in Baghdad]. That was shortly before I enlisted. I shipped off to basic training at the end of May 2003 to Fort Jackson, S.C.”

Eventually, she became a platoon leader and a company commander.

She has the support of Bernie Sanders, the de facto leader of the progressive movement, and boasts of endorsements from a string of liberal-friendly groups. The environment-focused Sierra Club and League of Conservation Voters, labor unions such as the AFL-CIO, Planned Parenthood and National Nurses United have all given Gabbard, a three-term congresswoman, their blessing as she seeks re-election in the November midterm elections.

But Gabbard’s stated progressive bona fides have been called into question by her opponents, who are waging an ambitious challenge from the left in the hopes of pulling off an upset in Saturday’s Hawaii congressional primary.

Although their prospects are grim, Gabbard’s critics say her views on foreign policy and tolerance for dictators such as Bashar al-Assad deserve another look.

Gabbard declined an interview for this story.

“Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard has spoken out strongly against the Trump administration’s travel/refugee ban, the Trump administration’s illegal military strikes against Syria, Trump’s decision to pull out of the Iran Nuclear Deal, Trump’s decision to end DACA, and other dangerous decisions and policies,” Erika Tsuji, a spokeswoman for Gabbard’s re-election campaign, said in a statement to the Guardian.

Gabbard also stands by her meeting with Assad, her spokeswoman said: “She has stated time and again that peace can never be achieved if we only meet and speak with our friends. If we really want peace, we need to be fearless enough to sit down and speak directly with our adversaries.”

Although a majority of Democratic voters in Gabbard’s district and neighboring areas said she was obligated to debate her rivals, the snub has not appeared to have had much palpable effect on her prospects.

Colin Moore, an associate professor of political science at the University of Hawaii, said Gabbard’s continued popularity was undeniable. But whereas he predicted Gabbard would sail to another term in Congress, Moore said she has yet to truly be tested nationally — where her ambitions may, in fact, be.

Gabbard told the Huffington Post about how her religion helped her through Iraq, “First thing in the morning and the last thing at night, I meditated upon the fact that my essence was spirit, not matter, that I was not my physical body, and that I didn’t need to worry about death because I knew that I would continue to exist and I knew that I would be going to God,” she said.

Her opponent, Kawika Crowley, even went so far as to say Gabbard’s religion “was incompatible with the Constitution.”

Gabbard retorted with an appeal to her service, via an email to HuffPo: “It is stunning that some people in Congress would so arrogantly thumb their nose at the Bill of Rights. When I volunteered to put my life on the line in defense of our country, no one asked me what my religion was.

Makkah Siege of 1979 – Turning Point in Saudi Arabia

Pleasantly surprised by a four parts documentary on the history of the Middle East on Dutch television. Instead of the usual political propaganda, some excellent Arabists to narrate the story of Abdul Nasser from the Suez Crisis of 1956 – the War with Israel in 1967 up to the Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979).

During the secular leadership of Nasser in Egypt during the 1950s, his effort to create equality for the masses through a Arab socialism with land reform got him much praise. Nasser gave people hope of independence from foreign influence. President Dwight Eisenhower played an important role during the Suez Crisis to make clear to the British and French that the era of their empires ended after World War II.

What put a new perspective in my mind was the 1980s and the religious turnaround in Saudi Arabia as a result of the establishment of an Ayatollah as leader of a nation across the Gulf. The Shah of Persia with all his riches, a security state backed by colonial powers, was overthrown by the masses. It was a warning to the House of Saud which had profited immensely from the 1973 oil embargo and quadrupled pricing of a barrel of black gold.

In Mecca there were religious extremists who occupied the Grand Mosque with very much the same purpose as was taking place in Tehran: overthrow of the monarchy to establish a nation under religious leadership. All participants were beheaded.

The handful of perpetrators who profaned the sanctity of the ancient house were tried. King Khalid bin Abdul Aziz issued order No. 4207 / 2 stipulating the execution of the arrested members of Juhayman’s gang who were involved in the seizure of the Holy Mosque. His orders included carrying out their execution in a number of different provinces, to make an example of them. On the same day 63 of those involved in the attack were executed: 15 in Mecca, 7 in Medina, 10 in Riyadh, 7 in Dammam, 7 in Buraidah, 5 in Hail, 7 Abha, 5 Tabuk. Juhayman was one of those who received a death sentence. He was executed on 9 January 1980.

What is special, the message was carried forward by the Saudi monarchy to establish religious madrassas and export Islamic fundamentalism across the globe. To get rid of the hot heads and fanatics, the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union offered a ideal opportunity. Unfortunately, the Carter administration thought the Cold War was more important than the American hostages holed up by the religious fanatics in Tehran.

Rejectionist Islamism in Saudi Arabia: The Story of Juhayman al-‘Utaybi Revisited

The storming of the Mecca mosque by Juhayman al-`Utaybi and his fellow rebels in November 1979 represents one of the most spectacular events in the modern history of Saudi Arabia. Yet it is one of the least understood. Even decades after the event, many important questions remain unanswered. Who were the rebels and what did they want? Why and how did Juhayman’s group come into existence? What happened with the rebels and their ideas after the Mecca events? This article seeks to shed light on the story and legacy of Juhayman al-`Utaybi with new information gathered from extensive fieldwork in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere.

While the details of the Mecca operation are relatively well-known, the origin of the rebel group is shrouded in mystery. The existing literature on Juhayman’s movement is both sparse and contradictory. The interested student will find few in-depth studies of it in English. The Arabic-language literature on Juhayman is somewhat more extensive and has certainly been underexploited by Western academics, but many works suffer from inaccuracies and political bias. A key problem has been the absence of good primary sources, which has made it virtually impossible for historians to trace the origin and history of Juhayman’s movement in any significant detail. This changed in 2003 when Nasir al-Huzaymi, a former associate of Juhayman, lifted the veil on his past and wrote a series of articles in the Saudi press about his experience as a member of Juhayman’s group. Al-Huzaymi had been active in the organisation between 1976 and 1978, but left a year before the Mecca operation. He was caught in the police roundup after the event and spent eight years in prison. Al-Huzaymi has renounced his former Islamist convictions and now works as a journalist in the Saudi newspaper al-Riyadh.

Al-Huzaymi is one of several former Islamist radicals in Saudi Arabia who, from the late 1990s onward, began speaking publicly about their experiences as activists. While their emergence at this particular point in time was facilitated by the process of limited liberalisation initiated by Crown Prince `Abdallah in 1999 and to some extent exploited by the authorities as a counterbalance to conservative Islamist forces, it was by no  means  orchestrated  by  the  state.  These  repentants  had  emerged  gradually  in  independent communities and began speaking out before 9/11 or the 2003 terrorist campaign in Saudi Arabia. There are strong reasons to take al-Huzaymi’s testimony seriously. His account is descriptive, unflattering toward the authorities, and above all consistent with other key historical sources.

The 1950s and 1960s witnessed a few episodes of leftist and communist unrest in the Kingdom, which reinforced the regime’s conviction that a reliance on religious forces was the best means of social control. The accession to the throne of the pan-Islamist King Faisal in 1964 and the dynamics of the Arab Cold War further increased the budgets and the influence of the religious establishment and the Islamic organisations in Saudi Arabia. This created a context favourable to the development of local brands of Islamism, from which later movements of political-religious opposition would emerge.

At this time, two different types of Islamism developed in Saudi Arabia. One was pragmatic, political and elitist, and became known as the “Islamic Awakening” (al-sahwa al-islamiyya) or just “the Sahwa”. This represented the mainstream of the Saudi Islamist movement. On its margins emerged an isolationist, pietistic and low-class Islamist phenomenon, which can be termed “rejectionist” or “neo-salafi”. From the 1960s to the 1990s, the two strains coexisted, representing relatively distinct ideological approaches and sociological phenomena, although the former remained politically and numerically more significant. The Sahwa developed primarily on university campuses after the arrival, from the late 1950s onwards, of large numbers of members of the Muslim Brotherhood fleeing persecution in countries like Egypt and Syria. These individuals – many of whom were academics or well-trained professionals – would rapidly become the backbone of the newly established Saudi education and media sectors. It was partly through their impulse that the Sahwa gained momentum in Saudi universities in the 1970s and 1980s, before spearheading the reformist Islamist opposition of the early 1990s. Ideologically, the Sahwa represented a blend of the traditional Wahhabi outlook (mainly on social issues) and the more contemporary Muslim Brotherhood approach (especially on political issues). Politically, representatives of the Sahwa have sought to reform the state’s policies without ever straight-forwardly questioning the state’s legitimacy.

However, it is from the other Islamist strain – the rejectionist one – that Juhayman’s movement emerged in the 1970s. In 1961, The Islamic University of Medina had been set up under the leadership of the Grand Mufti Muhammad bin Ibrahim Al al-Shaykh and the later  well-known ‘Abd al-Aziz bin Baz. Both of them were eager to inspire a broader movement of Wahhabisation in the Hijaz, which for decades had enjoyed relative cultural and religious autonomy. They therefore encouraged their students to engage in proselytism (da`wa) and enforcement of religious laws (hisba).

After 35 Years, Iran Liquidates MKO Terrorist near Amsterdam

The historical event of a savage bombing inside Iran’s new leadership after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. The Pahlavi monarchy was ousted, kept in power for decades by foreign states: USA, UK and Israel (Mossad trained the Savak secret police). The occupation of the U.S. Embassy and hostage taking uncovered top secrets detrimental to both the CIA and Mossad. How the Reagan administration managed to make a deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran to keep the hostages imprisoned until after the presidential election of 1980 is one of the secrets of the “deep state” – Pentagon and IC (27 units).

In addition to the deal with Iran, delivering spare-parts needed to keep the Western purchased fighter planes in the air, the CIA used the proceeds to fund the right-wing extremists in Central America: El Salvador and Nicaragua. The military goods were delivered to Iran through emissaries of Israel.

Rear Adm. John M. Poindexter, the President’s former national security adviser, testified that he had approved diversion of the profits to the contras without ever telling President Reagan or anyone else.

Back to Iran and The Netherlands as a trial gets underway of two Moroccan gang suspects hired to liquidate two Iranians living with a new identity after receiving asylum!!! How deep must a nation sink and pretend it opposed terror of all sorts. Hypocrisy certainly after placing heavy diplomatic and economic sanctions on the Russian Federation since 2014.

First back to the horrific campaign of murderous bombings in Tehran in 1981.

Message to Massoud Rajavi: ‘Strike the heads of the serpent’

The eruption of riots was actually MKO’s first organized armed revolt to steer the country to the verge of a chaotic atmosphere and anarchy and it was followed by daily scattered clashes, bombings and terrorist atrocities. The ousted Bani-Sadr himself used as the pretext to trigger MKO’s armed revolt, encouraged the group to precipitate the created crises by a wave of violent activities including assassination of high-ranking statesmen and personalities. In her confessions after her arrest, Sudabeh Sadifi, an adviser to Bani-Sadr, asserted that Bani-Sadr after his dismissal in a message to Massoud Rajavi, MKO’s leader, urged him to “Start striking their heads. There is no other way.”

Plots to assassinate the key, influential heads in charge hatched just after Bani-Sadr and Rajavi’s hiding in the organization’s secret hideouts. The first perpetrated terrorist act was an attempt to assassinate Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Tehran’s Friday prayers at the time, on 27 June, 1981; a bomb, concealed in a tape recorder, exploded beside him while he was delivering an address in Abu Dhar mosque south of Tehran. He escaped assassination but suffered serious injuries that left his right hand handicapped. The terrorist agent was identified to be a MKO’s central cadre, Javad Qadiri.

Tehran was still under the shock of the attempt assassination when MKO stroke the successive terrorist blow the day after on June 28. Reportedly, two blasts ripped through IRP building as the chief Ayatollah Beheshti was addressing his regular weekly meeting [NYT]. The death toll rose to 74 including Ayatollah Beheshti, Cabinet ministers, deputy ministers and members of Parliament. The perpetrator was identified to be an infiltrated agent of MKO, Muhammad-Reza Kulahi. It was so heavy a strike for the newly formed regime and both MKO and Bani-Sadr expected complete destabilization and overthrow of the ruling authority. However, the public reaction to such violent, immoral deeds was nothing more than a strong feeling of repulsion towards MKO.

On July 27, 1981, Muhammad-Ali Rajai won a landslide victory in Iran’s second post-revolution presidential election. Deeply disappointed, the sole option before the two fugitives living in secret hideouts was to immediately leave the country. On 29 July, Bani-Sadr accompanied by Rajavi, in disguise and by having shaved off his customary mustache, were driven to a Tehran military base and got on board of a hijacked Iranian air force 707 jet tanker around 10 at night.

Ministry Chides ‘Unfriendly’ Dutch Expulsion of Diplomats

Iran protested Sunday against the Netherlands’ expulsion of two of its diplomats and threatened to retaliate for the “unfriendly and destructive move.”

A spokesman for the Dutch intelligence service AIVD told AFP Friday that two employees of Iran’s embassy had been expelled on June 7, without providing further details.

The Dutch ambassador to Tehran was subsequently summoned to express Tehran’s “severe protest” at the move, Iran’s foreign ministry said in an online statement.

“As earlier announced to the ambassador of the Netherlands, the Islamic Republic reserves the right to retaliate,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said in the statement. The expulsion was “illogical and illegitimate” and Qasemi called on “Dutch officials to refrain from leveling baseless and absurd accusations.”

Qasemi also called on the Dutch government to explain “its move to shelter the criminal and terrorist members” of the anti-Iran Mujahedin Khalq Organization (MKO).

Tehran banned the MKO in 1981 and the European Union put the group on a terror blacklist between 2002 and 2009.

Iran Gov’t under Fire for Inaction towards Netherlands’ Expulsion of Diplomats

A conservative Iranian daily has harshly criticized the Rouhani administration, particularly the Foreign Ministry, for not showing proper reaction to the Netherlands’ expulsion of two Iranian diplomats.

Kayhan in a recent critical article that the two diplomats were ordered to leave the country after Amsterdam accused them of being involved in the murder of two anti-Iran individuals, namely Ahmad Nisi, a terrorist, and Ali Mo’tamed.

The newspaper takes a swipe at the Iranian government for issuing a statement in condemnation of the murder of Ahmad Nisi who, according to Kayhan, had the blood of many Iranians on his hands and was killed as a result of an internecine battle.

The Iranian ambassador was also summoned to the Netherlands’ General Intelligence and Security Service to be notified of Amsterdam’s decision to expel the two diplomats, writes Kayhan.

According to the daily, the Iranian ambassador did not show any reaction to the Netherlands’ statements and accusations. It said the ambassador expressed no official protest to Amsterdam’s accusing Iran of having committed the organized murders which had actually been the handiwork of terrorist groups, and simply asked the diplomats to leave the Netherlands because Amsterdam wanted them to.

Kayhan slams the Iranian government for not reciprocating the move. According to the paper, the Netherlands had given refuge to a terrorist, who had killed so many Iranians, but Iran remained silent without showing any proper reaction.

My Learning About Victor Klemperer

“What is there that embodies the democratic, the German, the humane ideal?”
Klemperer asked himself in his diary. For his own life, of course, he already
knew the answer: it lay in the tireless curiosity, the questioning, the generous
standards of debate of his heroes Voltaire and Montesquieu and of the other
    thinkers of the Enlightenment.

He said the NSDAP knows that a political system, which is in the least degree dependent on lies, cannot be a lasting one; consequently they, the Nazis, had never made use of even the smallest lie . . . Then also of great and melancholy interest to me, to discover that Toni Gerstle, whom I had always believed to have

a cool head, is a firm believer in astrology. She believes in star positions, “it” has always proved right so far. She was half offended and half contemptuous that my shallow rationalism should doubt these things. Reason was impotent after all, the influence of the constellations, perhaps on the hour of our conception, was absolutely certain. Should I be surprised if Hitler assails “intellectualism” and swears by blood? What else is the daughter of a Jewish Supreme Court judge doing? And in what way are the Zionists different from the Nazis? People treat reason as if it were the most minor and harmful aspect of a whole human being. It is as if a soldier standing guard were to say to himself: What good would my rifle be, if I were now to be attacked by a dozen enemies? I shall therefore lay it aside and smoke opium cigarettes until I doze off.

Fraulein Roth, the librarian, was here on Friday afternoon and evening. Vehemently opposed to the Nazis– but: “If they had expelled the Eastern Jews or had excluded Jews from the bench, that at least would have been comprehensible.” So that would not have seemed absolutely evil to her. So here too Hitler is not without a base.

I love my Dix-huitième more than ever. Besides, Fraulein Roth was very taken with my first Rousseau chapter and pleased at the contemporary references. The fact is, that the Nazi doctrine is in part not really alien to the people, in part is gradually polluting the healthy section of the population. Neither Christian nor Jew is safe from infection. — Roth further told me that my books have been removed from the library reading room.

Relations between Jewish and non-Jewish Germans 1933-1945:
A case study in the use of evidence by historians

The reason why Klemperer has attracted so much scholarly attention is related to underlying trends in the historiography of Nazi Germany. In the early post-war years, historians had promoted the view that a totalitarian National Socialist regime had imposed its will, top-down, on Germany’s citizens. Eventually theories of Polykratie and ‘broadly diffused societal complicity’ emerged, which led to a shift in focus away from the power structures and activities of the regime to social-historical examinations of the ‘ordinary people’ in Germany. In this context, Klemperer’s diaries provided a unique window for scholars interested in viewing society from a ‘bottom-up’ approach. Klemperer’s comprehensive and even expert viewpoint made him well equipped to comment on the society in which he lived. He was not representative of the powerful elements of his society, but lived and moved among the ‘ordinary’ people. Because his diaries were articulate and detailed, they have proven to be an invaluable resource for historians interested in the sections of society who generally leave less of an imprint behind them than those who belong to the structures of power.

Music among the Ruins: Classical Music, Propaganda, and the American Cultural Agenda in West Berlin (1945-1949)

With Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945, the Office of Military Government, United States (OMGUS) prepared to implement the most ambitious cultural re-education program it had ever undertaken.

An examination of classical music culture in West Berlin reveals how the American Military Government used classical music as a tool for re-education and re-orientation.  Between the years 1945 and 1949, the American agenda evolved from combating Nazism to containing Communism, as alterations in music control policies reflected the incipient Cold War.  An analysis of concert repertoires, interviews, musical scores, photographs, program notes, radio broadcasts, and governmental correspondence, exposes how American authorities altered the performance context of German classical music The early postwar experience of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, under American cultural officer John Bitter’s guidance, exemplifies the irony of encouraging greater artistic freedom through increased censorship and control, providing an illuminating case study with regard to American cultural re-education efforts.  As the primary ensemble residing in the American sector, the Philharmonic would be complicit in its own symbolic domination, to borrow Pierre Bourdieu’s term, by acquiescing to certain American Military Government requirements in order to resume concertizing, such as performing for American troops and agreeing to certain alterations in personnel.

“I am German, the Others Are Un-German” | Der Spiegel |

“Germany is contaminated by Fascism”

To those on the outside, Klemperer’s career in East Germany looks like a paradigm. He became a member of the Socialist Unity Party (SED), received awards and assumed important offices in the Socialist state. Klemperer even moved into the People’s Chamber as a representative. And yet he kept doubting. He doubted the East, the West, Germany as a whole. “I do not believe in the value of the things that I fight for.”

“His” Germany, the land of poets and thinkers, a land flooded with light and without any shadows — Victor Klemperer probably never found that image in East Germany either. With a sense of resignation, he wrote on New Year’s Eve 1959 that “Germany is sort of like a scatter-brained earthworm cut into two pieces. Both parts squirm around, both are contaminated by Fascism, both in their own way.” Victor Klemperer died of a heart attack on Feb. 11, 1960 in Dresden.

My reflection about Victor Klemperer was inspired by gmoke’s recent diary:

How the Israel lobby is using Owen Jones | Electronic Intifada |

Last week the Jewish Labour Movement announced that Guardian columnist Owen Jones will be the big name speaker at an event the group is holding on 2 April.

Jones will lecture on “left anti-Semitism, the Middle East and the Labour Party.”

Continued below the fold …

The Jewish Labour Movement scoring Jones appears to be a high-profile instance of a new push endorsed by Israel’s government to ensure that Palestine solidarity “instigators” are “singled out” from so-called “soft critics” of Israel.

According to The Jewish Daily Forward, the strategy – jointly developed by the Reut Institute and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) – “calls for a big tent approach that accepts progressive critics of Israel” while also demanding “an all-out assault on leading critics of Israel, sometimes using covert means.”

“The instigators must be singled out from the other groups, and handled uncompromisingly, publicly or covertly,” the Reut-ADL report states, according to The Forward, which obtained a copy on condition it not publish the entire document.

The Jewish Labour Movement, a pro-Israel organization within the UK’s main opposition Labour Party, appears to be on board with this strategy.

Al Jazeera’s recent undercover documentary The Lobby  revealed the Jewish Labour Movement’s close ties to the Israeli embassy, as well as its campaign against BDS, the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.

I have posted a comment recently, and the attack goes on unabated. Could this be another leadership battle within the Labour party?

Thus the narrative is carried forward in a new attack on the British Labour party. Earlier in March, US media accused Russian president Putin of anti-semitism. This meme had been used occasionally before during and after the Maidan revolt in Kiev, Ukraine in 2014.

NBC Sets Off International Firestorm by Mistranslating Putin | Eusrasia Review OpEd – March 15, 2018 |

If you heard Putin say “Russia’s Jews aren’t worthy to be called Russian” would you take offense? I would. That’s an affront to common sensibility. It certainly sounds anti-Semitic to me.

When Senator Richard Blumenthal heard Putin imply that sentiment in a recent NBC interview he reacted strongly: “Repulsive Putin remark deserves to be denounced, soundly and promptly, by world leaders.”

The only trouble is that Putin never made that statement. Blumenthal was responding to NBC’s translation of Putin’s remarks in a TV interview with Megyn Kelly. But Putin didn’t speak the words NBC claims he did. NBC distorted his message.

I don’t know if it was done intentionally with political motive or if it was just incompetent journalism. But NBC’s mistranslation set off a chain reaction. Newser.com remarked that Putin critics have “assailed the leader for his apparent implication that Russian Jews aren’t true Russians.”

The sensational story spawned headlines like these:

“Putin condemned for saying Jews may have manipulated US election” -Washington Post

“Putin suggests Jews with Russian citizenship behind election meddling” -USA Today

“Hey, Putin: Don’t pin this on the Jews” -Salt Lake Tribune

And in response to the media furor, leading Jewish organizations also chimed in:

Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt stated, “President Putin bizarrely has resorted to the blame game by pointing the finger at Jews and other minorities in his country.” He added, “It is deeply disturbing to see the Russian president giving new life to classic anti-Semitic stereotypes that have plagued his country for hundreds of years, with a comment that sounds as if it was ripped from the pages of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

The American Jewish Committee tweeted: “President Putin suggesting that Russian Federation minorities, be they Ukrainian, Tatar, or Jewish, were behind US election meddling  is eerily reminiscent of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

Journalists and agitated commentators perhaps didn’t realize that NBC had altered what Putin really said. Here’s what transpired …

Was Putin’s ‘anti-Semitic’ comment lost in translation? | Times of Israel / JTA – March 2018 |

When Boruch Gorin, a well-known rabbi in Moscow, traveled for the first time from Russia to the United States, a US Customs officer asked him whether he was Russian.

“I said, `No, I’m not Russian — I’m Jewish,'” Gorin recalled Monday, 27 years after the exchange at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The semantics behind the exchange, Gorin said, are the reason that local Jewish groups remained largely indifferent to a remark about Jews aired Sunday by Russian President Vladimir Putin that to foreign ears sounded anti-Semitic.

In the interview with NBC News, Putin said that Russians who allegedly interfered with the 2016 US presidential election perhaps are “not even Russians,” adding “Maybe they’re Ukrainians, Tatars, Jews, just with Russian citizenship. Even that needs to be checked. Maybe they have dual citizenship. Or maybe a green card. Maybe it was the Americans who paid them for this work. How do you know? I don’t know.

Across Eastern Europe, this linguistic distinction has plagued how officials’ statements are perceived abroad — not least in Poland. Amid rising diplomatic tensions with Israel over rhetoric on the Holocaust, the Polish attorney general, Zbigniew Ziobro, said in January that “after Nazi Germany attacked, millions of people were murdered in occupied Poland, including 3 million Poles.” That seemed to be in reference to the 3 million non-Jewish Poles killed during World War II, suggesting he did not consider the 3 million Polish Jews who were exterminated to be Poles. But in reality, the word “Jew” in Polish is used to refer primarily to ethnicity, not to nationality.

Putin’s answer in the NBC interview was translated into English without the nuance crucial to understanding it, said Gorin, who is a senior aide to Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, the head of the Chabad movement in Russia.

Lightning strikes twice or history repeating itself to serve a nefarious goal?

They brought with them words of alarm from Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, as well as from a host of congressional leaders and supporters of the president for whom Trump’s public praise of Putin proved to be a bridge too far.

Yesterday I read an opinion piece and did some analysis where this criticism is coming from … I got some sense in background and misinformation to damage Jeremy Corbyn.

[Update-1]

Israel passes controversial Jewish nation-state bill | DW |

Among other things, the law states only Jews have the right to self-determination, it “encourages” Jewish settlement and downgrades the status of the Arabic language. Critics say it is racist and threatens democracy.

The “nation-state” law, backed by the right-wing government, passed 62-55 with two abstentions in the 120-seat Knesset after months of political debate and after some parts were softened over concerns it would damage Israel’s international image.

The bill states that “Israel is the historic homeland of the Jewish people” and “the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.” It also downgrades Arabic from an official language alongside Hebrew to a “special” one, and declares Jerusalem the united capital of Israel.

The law also instructs the state to preserve the Jewish heritage within the diaspora, and contains passages about national holidays, the flag, the anthem and making the Hebrew calendar the official calendar.

The measure enters Israel’s Basic Law, which is similar to a constitution.

Israel has 1.9 million Arab citizens, or about 21 percent of the total population of 9 million. Another 5 percent of the population consists of non-Arab Christians or other ethnic groups.

‘The majority decides’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the law enshrined the principle of Jewish existence.

“Israel is the nation-state of the Jewish people that respects the
individual rights of all its citizens. This is our state — the Jewish state.”

Last week, Netanyahu vowed to ensure all civil rights were protected, but said “the majority also has rights and the majority decides.”

Just a reminder from the handwriting of President Truman in 1948 … crossed out the prefix “Jewish” when the United Nations voted for the independence of the State of Israel. A role played by George Marshall.

Ooops … the opinion piece written by MP Hodge got serious traction in a Jewish publication … some well done coordination IMO. 🙁
