Kucinich: It’s up to us to reclaim America! w/poll

It comes down to this.  I support Dennis Kucinich.  I don’t support HRC.  I don’t support Obama, Bill Richardson, Mike Gravel and I don’t support John Edwards.
The choice to me is clear.

On national security, I support Dennis and his doctrine of Strength through Peace.  Look at where the world is as a result of the Peace through Strength doctrine.  Are we more secure today because we throw our weight around?  My answer is no.

On Health Care, there is no comparison, IMHO.  Dennis supports a Universal Not-for-Profit Single-Payer system, in fact, he’s the co-author (along with John Conyers) of HR 676.  The others?  Incrementalism at best, and helping to keep America hostage to the insurance industry at worst.  The sad thing is that the other candidates admit that Single Payer is the way to go, but they don’t have the courage of their convictions, arguing that they won’t be able to pass it.  I’ve had enough of spineless Democrats.

On Iraq, Dennis has been right from the start.  He doesn’t have to apologize for either co-sponsoring the IWR, voting for the damned thing or for funding the war.  He also has a 12 step plan, HR 1234, to withdraw our troops and stabilize Iraq.  He’s also the candidate who is clear on the issue of using nuclear weapons against other countries who do not threaten us, and that answer is no.

On impeachment, we know where the other candidates stand:

It’s Dennis who’s stood up and taken the fight to Congress.  It’s Dennis who’s brought forward H Res 799 (formerly H Res 333).  It’s Dennis who’s standing up for the Constitution!

On the Patriot Act, we all know that Dennis voted against it.  He read the thing.  He also voted against the extension.

There are so many other issues on which to agree with Dennis.  If you wish to know more, you can go to Dennis’ issues PDF page.

Dennis is right that it’s time to reclaim America:

And while the sunshine patriot may feel that the fight for the nomination is over, not everyone agrees:

George McGovern: Why I Believe Bush Must Go

Former Democratic standard carrier and long-time former Senator George McGovern has joined the gowing chorus for the impeachment of the President and Vice-President!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/04/AR2008010404308_pf.html
“As we enter the eighth year of the Bush-Cheney administration, I have belatedly and painfully concluded that the only honorable course for me is to urge the impeachment of the president and the vice president.”

more:

“Of course, there seems to be little bipartisan support for impeachment. The political scene is marked by narrow and sometimes superficial partisanship, especially among Republicans, and a lack of courage and statesmanship on the part of too many Democratic politicians. So the chances of a bipartisan impeachment and conviction are not promising.”

more:

“In a more fundamental sense, American democracy has been derailed throughout the Bush-Cheney regime. The dominant commitment of the administration has been a murderous, illegal, nonsensical war against Iraq. That irresponsible venture has killed almost 4,000 Americans, left many times that number mentally or physically crippled, claimed the lives of an estimated 600,000 Iraqis (according to a careful October 2006 study from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) and laid waste their country. The financial cost to the United States is now $250 million a day and is expected to exceed a total of $1 trillion, most of which we have borrowed from the Chinese and others as our national debt has now climbed above $9 trillion — by far the highest in our national history.

All of this has been done without the declaration of war from Congress that the Constitution clearly requires, in defiance of the U.N. Charter and in violation of international law. This reckless disregard for life and property, as well as constitutional law, has been accompanied by the abuse of prisoners, including systematic torture, in direct violation of the Geneva Conventions of 1949.”

more:

“There has never been a day in my adult life when I would not have sacrificed that life to save the United States from genuine danger, such as the ones we faced when I served as a bomber pilot in World War II. We must be a great nation because from time to time, we make gigantic blunders, but so far, we have survived and recovered.”

Go George!

Etheridge: "I think that this ABC debate is nothing but an infomercial now."

Melissa gets it right.  We know that the big three and Richardson are all pretty much the same as far as substance goes.  The media, party and most of the blogosphere have what they want.
Via The Caucus, the New York Times Political Blog:

“This just sent me over the top,” the singer said. She was referring to Representative Dennis J. Kucinich’s exclusion from tonight’s Democratic debate, which is sponsored by ABC, WMUR-TV and Facebook.

If the Edwards supporters think the MSM is ignoring John (and that’s one of the big memes being pushed by John’s supporters this weekend, have a look around), they have much to look forward to.  Dennis has pretty much been ignored by the MSM from the beginning of the campaign.  Why?

  1. Impeachment.  Dennis is the only candidate who’s willing to stand up to Mr. 24% and his puppet master Dick Cheney.  The media doesn’t want it covered.  The four candidates on the stage don’t support it.  What a nice convergence.
  2. Universal Health Care.  Notice health care, not insurance.  That’s right, Dennis is the only candidate who supports a single-payer not-for-profit system!  The others, while saying that single payer is what they’re striving for, are happy to keep the insurance companies in business and move incrementally.
  3. Get the troops out of Iraq.  Dennis didn’t vote for the IWR, and he sure didnt’ co-sponsor it.  He hasn’t voted for any funding.  Isn’t it nice to know that the Democratic party will probably nominate a person who were fooled into supporting Mr. 24%, or who have voted to fund the fiasco in Iraq (Bill Richardson gets a pass on this one).
  4. Keeping nukes off the table. Who would have imagined that any serious Democrat would be willing to use nukes against nations who are not able to threaten us with anihilation?  Dennis isn’t.

The list goes on and on.  We know that Dennis is the voice of opposition within the Democratic party.  We now know that that voice of opposition is to be silenced by the MSM and the Democratic party.

She said that “corporate interests that have infiltrated the Democratic Party” have marginalized Mr. Kucinich because his stances on issues like the environment, health care and the war go against their interests.

That pretty much says it all!

Kucinich: The other choice! w/poll

Thanks to Iowa, we have the big three having thinned the Democratic field somewhat.  Dodd and Biden, both honorable public servants, have dropped out.  Mike Gravel, my second choice, hangs in there though he’s been thouroughly marginalized.  Bill Richardson will be on the stage tomorrow with the big three, and to be honest, he belongs with them.  From my perspective, electing HRC, BO, JE or BR will pretty much get us the same thing.  The differences among themselves are window dressing, and the differences they will bring to the White House are window dressing.  Yes, better than the Repugs, but window dressing none the less.
I want a real Democrat.

I want a Democrat who’s for impeaching both Dick and W.

I want someone who’s been against the Iraq war from the start and hasn’t voted to fund it.  I want a Democrat who’ll bring the troops home in the first three months of his administration, and I don’t need a convert.

I want a Democrat who’s for a Universal Single Payer Not for Profit Health Care system, where the 31% overhead of the insurance companies is cut to 3-4% which exists in Medicare.  I don’t want an incremental system that won’t ever be single payer.  I don’t want mandated health insurance.  I want health care.

I want a President who has voted against the Patriot Act.  I want a President who’s voted against the extension of the Patriot act.  I want a President who voted against the FISA capitulation.

I want a leader who’s willing to go to bat for the workers in America.  I want a leader who’ll get us out of NAFTA and the WTO, and who’ll go back to bilateral treaties where workers rights are enshrined.  I don’t want a person in office that thinks NAFTA is either ok or fixable.  I want a leader who understands the need to rebuild America’s manufacturing base and infrastructure, and who understands that it should be done so in a sustainable manner.

You know who I want:

New Hampshire has enshrined in Article 10 of it’s Constitution the Right of Revolution:

Government being instituted for the common benefit, protection, and security, of the whole community, and not for the private interest or emolument of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, whenever the ends of government are perverted, and public liberty manifestly endangered, and all other means of redress are ineffectual, the people may, and of right ought to reform the old, or establish a new government. The doctrine of nonresistance against arbitrary power, and oppression, is absurd, slavish, and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind.

We’re being told that it’s a three horse race.  I say New Hampshire’s Constitution has it right.  It’s time for a revolt.  And for our party, and our nation, that revolution should be in the favor of a true Democrat.

Iowa: Winners and Losers. w/poll

So, Iowans has gone to their meetings and the results are in.  With all of the analysis that’s going on, I thought I’d throw my 2 cents worth in.
Winners:

Among the candidates: Barack Obama, Mike Huckabee and Ron Paul.

Barack and Mike are the obvious choices.  After all, they won the most delegates.  I don’t see any way to call them losers.

Ron Paul?  Say what you will, and I will not vote for the Doctor, but he got 10%.  To be honest, who would have thought going in that he would have done so?  What’s more, those 10% probably aren’t GOP basers (well, probably half of them, at least).  That’s 5-10% that the Repugs will have to win back right there, which bodes well for the Dems.

Other winners:  Iowa Democrats and Democrats in general.  A 2 to 1 turnout advantage bodes well for interest in the Democratic candidates.  Way to go Iowans.

Not winners, not losers: Hillary, John for the Dems, John McCain for Repugs.  Hillary and Edwards are in a statistical dead heat (it looks like John will come in 2nd by less than 1 point over HRC) and it doesn’t knock either of the candidates out.  McCain was dead in the water a month or so ago, so his finish is better than he probably should have gotten going in.  Obviously, for these candidates, New Hampshire looms large.

Losers: Mitt, Fred, Rudy and Repugs in general.  In general, they were out drawn by a 2 to 1 margin by the Dems, which doesn’t bode well for them.  Mitt was the front-runner in Iowa up ’til the last two weeks and got scorched.  Fred hasn’t caught on.  Rudy, well, is Rudy even if he had given up in Iowa.  Rudy probably won’t be the national front runner now, and it will be interesting to see if he’s able to play catch-up.

So, it’s one down and more than 50 to go (assuming DC, Puerto Rico and our other possessions get votes in the nominating process).  It’s an interesting start to the voting season.

Dennis Kucinich: A peace-seeking idealist to the core w/poll

Washington – To understand the importance Dennis Kucinich places on spirituality, scan his generally spare Capitol Hill office: a white cloth from the Dalai Lama, a bust of Gandhi, and a picture representing “conscious light” – a gift from Brahma Kumaris nuns.

There’s a Tibetan dragon washbowl and, on his desk, two heavy crucifixes once worn by Catholic nuns who taught him and who, he says, “saved my life.”

By Amanda Paulson via csmonitor.com
The naysayers go after Dennis for his new-agey beliefs.  We’ve all read them, whether in snarky diaries or snide comments.  Isn’t it amazing that they don’t pay attention to where those beliefs lead.

For instance, it might be said that a candidate dedicated to peace won’t work in our current world situation.  I would remind them that our current president and vice-president are as far from peace lovers as we could ask for.  See what we’ve got?

“Obviously, I connect with all religions,” says Representative Kucinich (D) of Ohio, in the midst of his second presidential campaign. “All manners of belief and even non-belief come from a common font, and that is the transcendent power of the human heart…. All those things that would separate us are based on misunderstandings of our nature.”

I may as well put that part in, as it is the part that will be used as naysayers.  To which I ask: “Where do your beliefs lead from?  Where do any of the other candidates?  More importantly, where do your and the other candidates beliefs lead to?”

While his colleagues in Congress recently voted for more military funds for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, he is pushing for immediate withdrawal from Iraq and advocates cutting money from the defense budget. In the middle of the war on terror, he wants to establish a Department of Peace. He’s the only Democratic presidential candidate who wants a Medicare system for all Americans, supports gay marriage, and advocates repealing the North American Free Trade Agreement and withdrawing from the World Trade Organization.

Of course, he’s the only candidate running who’s right on all of these issues.  And he’s been right from the start.

“A lot of people don’t agree with Dennis on specific issues, but nobody ever doubts where he stands,” says Andy Juniewicz, Kucinich’s press secretary and a friend who worked as a copy boy with him at the Plain Dealer and has known him for more than 40 years. “He’s probably the most courageous elected official I’ve ever known. Whatever the odds, if he believes he’s right, he’ll buck those odds and push for what he believes is right.”

If one has a strong foundation upon which one’s beliefs are built upon, one is able to stand for them, even in the face of the “cave and call it cooperation” mindset of the current Democratic Party.

“He sincerely believes in the kinds of things he’s saying and stands for,” says Alexander Lamis, a political scientist at Case Western University in Cleveland. Professor Lamis remembers going out to lunch with Kucinich and Carl Stokes, the first African-American mayor of a big city and a friend of Kucinich’s until his death. The conversation turned to Tom Johnson, a Cleveland mayor at the turn of the 20th century and a leader of the Progressive movement. “They talked about how they considered themselves the only two Cleveland mayors to follow in the Tom Johnson mayoral tradition,” says Lamis. “Coming with that tradition is fighting against the well-to-do special interests. It’s just what Dennis believes.”

Fighting against the well-to-do special interests.  It’s not just a slogan, it’s what Dennis does!

Perhaps most interesting is the idea of a country dedicated to peace.  Is such a dream possible.  Can a great and powerful country turn it’s back on war and turn it’s great power to the pusuit of peace?

My answer is yes, and it’s already happened in India under the great Bhuddist king Asoka:

As if it were not astonishing enough for an emperor to confess his remorse and devote his life to making amends for the appalling suffering caused by a war he waged simply to expand his power, Ashoka instituted a reign of peace that extended to all people, within and beyond his boundaries, and then to the land itself–plants, trees, birds, fish, and animals. He banned the hunting of many species of creatures and the sacrifice of any living being. In addition to creating thousands of monasteries, libraries, and hospitals, he set aside wildlife and forest preserves. In his second rock edict, quoted in the Buddhist Publication Society’s translation, Ashoka made provisions for medical treatment for animals as well as humans, and “wherever medical herbs, roots or fruits for humans and animals were not available,” he had them imported. The neem trees planted along main travel routes grew near the rest houses Ashoka had built along the roads. He also had wells dug and other trees planted for fruit and shade so that his people, especially the poor, might not endure needless suffering. The state, Ashoka taught, has an obligation to protect and conserve the entire living community.

Kucinich: Candidates Must Answer for Their Foreign Policy Stands on Pakistan and the Middle East

MANCHESTER, N.H., Dec. 28 PRNewswire-USNewswire — The assassination of Pakistani opposition leader and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto not only underscores the dangerous and heightening political volatility throughout the entire Middle East, it should also send a message to U.S. voters about the importance of electing leaders whose foreign policy records and pronouncements reflect sound judgment in mitigating hostilities, not contributing to them.

From PR Newswire
In a volatile world, it behooves a country to have as a leader someone of sound judgement.  In a time when a nuclear power is in crisis, it behooves the leader of the US to be right the first time.

Dennis Kucinich is that leader!

“It’s not enough to bemoan this terrible tragedy after the fact,” said Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich today. “The American people have every right to demand that the candidates for President be answerable for the war-and-peace decisions they have made over the years and prove that their policies and positions won’t plunge this nation and the world into even greater dangers.”

Kucinich continued, “Senators Clinton, Edwards, Biden and Dodd voted to give the President the authorization to go to war in Iraq. Their judgment was wrong. They and Senator Obama have voted to continue funding that war. Their judgment was wrong. They have repeatedly said ‘all options’ are on the table with respect to Iran. Intelligence reports revealing that Iran abandoned its nuclear weapons program four years ago again demonstrates that their judgment was wrong. They have failed to offer substantive approaches to address continuing tensions and hostilities among Israelis, Palestinians, and the Lebanese people.”

Dennis has been the leader against the disasterous policies of the administration of Dick and W.  He continues to take a principled stand against the destabilization taking place in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Kucinich, who led the opposition in the Congress five years ago to the war authorization bill and who has vociferously warned against Administration-led, Congressionally approved provocations against Iran, said he is the only Presidential candidate whose record reflects “the ability and the foresight to make the right decisions at the right time.  And when you’re talking about life and death decisions, a belated and apologetic ‘I made a mistake’ is not acceptable.”

Events in Pakistan, Iraq, and Iran may seem far removed, Kucinich said, “but the inability of our leaders to recognize the role that their fatally flawed foreign policies have on the lives and the security of American citizens should disqualify them from serious consideration for the highest office in the land and the most powerful post in the world.”

Kucinich has made two trips to the Middle East in the past two years.
He has met with the presidents of Lebanon and Syria, as well as other government officials in Israel, the Palestinian territories, and Lebanon, to talk about ways of lessening hostilities and moving towards peace.

Mike Huckabee comes in for scorn from Dennis as well:

KEENE, N.H., Dec. 28 PRNewswire-USNewswire — Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich today accused Republican candidate Mike Huckabee of using the tragic assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto to create anti-Pakistani fears in the U.S. and to advance his own discriminatory immigration policies.

Kucinich on Huckabee

We all know that the Repugs can be foul and vile, but in this case Huckabee seemes to have jumped the shark!

“I know I’m not running against Mike Huckabee,” said Kucinich, who is campaigning in New Hampshire, “but his remarks were so outrageous and so representative of the scare tactics and fearmongering policies of the current Republican administration that someone on the Democratic side of this campaign needs to speak out.”

Kucinich added, “To be silent would be the worst kind of betrayal of
the public trust that voters are being asked to invest in the Democratic candidates. The other candidates may choose to focus on a narrower political agenda, but Huckabee’s statements are so egregiously provocative
and dangerous that they cannot be ignored.”

And just what did the Huckster say to raise such scorn?

In comments yesterday and today, Huckabee said the United States should “have an immediate, very clear monitoring of our border, and particularly to make sure, if there’s any unusual activity of Pakistanis coming into the country.” When asked by reporters to expand on that statement, Huckabee replied, “When I say single them out I’m making the observation that we have more Pakistani illegals coming across our border than of all other nationalities except those immediately south of the border. And in light of what’s happening in Pakistan, it ought to give us pause as to why are so many illegals coming across these borders.”

Huckabee then added fuel to the fire that he himself ignited by adding, “the fact is the immigration issue is not so much about people coming across the border to pick lettuce or make beds, it’s about people who can come with a shoulder fired missile and can do serious damage and harm us.”

Fear and loathing is part and parcel of the Republican play book.  Dennis is correct in his refusal to bow to Huckabee’s xenophobia.

“Implying that Pakistani immigrants, visitors, and even Pakistani Americans should be singled out as potential terrorists is the kind of unwarranted, unconscionable ethnic profiling and ethnic baiting that is the hallmark of Republican thinking – in foreign policy, in immigration policy, and in so-called homeland security policy. No racial, ethnic, or religious group is safe from their audacious affronts to human decency and their continued assaults on Constitutional liberties and protections,” Kucinich said.

In Dennis Kucinich, we have a candidate who’s been right the first time on our dallying in the Middle East and Central Asia.  If you wish to support Dennis, you may go to his campaign site and donate online, via US Mail or by phone at 877.413.3664.  You can also donate through my ActBlue Page for Dennis.

Kucinich: Statement on the death of Benazir Bhutto

The US had chosen who to back in Pakistan, and that was Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.  Not surprisingly, it’s blown up in our faces.  We have no idea where things will lead, but the world is an ever more dangerous place tonight.  With an unstable Afghanistan on one border, Iran on another, longtime rivals India on another and China on the fourth, the instability that this adds could lead to a regional war involving the world’s two most populace countries (and Pakistan is no slouch at over 164 million people.
And so comes the voice of Dennis Kucinich:

MANCHESTER, NH – Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich issued the following statement this morning after hearing the news of the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto:

“This is a very dangerous moment for the world. Prime Minister Bhutto represented the forces of reform and the hope for an end to repression in a troubled region, and her death is a major loss to those efforts.”

“This terrible tragedy also underscores the need for the United States to adopt a new foreign policy toward the entire region because our current policy is all wrong. Our interference in the internal affairs of Pakistan has opened wide the doors of repression and violence. At this very moment, we should be working with leaders of the region to convene a meeting at the highest levels to begin a new effort towards stabilization and peace.”

“The United States must take a new direction in Pakistan and throughout the region. I met her several times, both in Washington and New York. She was deeply and genuinely dedicated to Pakistan. This is a tragic loss.”

Press release.

The question, I suppose, is would the leaders in the volatile region be willing to meet, and if so would they be willing to work toward finding an agreement that meets the needs of all of their people, reguardless of how it relates to the US’s involvement in the region.  My guess is that it will be best for the US to stand aside.

Kucinich `comes closest to embodying the ideals’ of The Nation

Progressive Democrats for American know it!  Democracy for America konws it!  The Readers of The Nation know it!  Dennis Kucinich is the candidate that represents their views, and each have voted for Dennis over the other Democratic Candidates!
Now, The Nation has editorialized what many already know, that Dennis Kucinich comes closest to embodying their ideals!

After a thorough evaluation of all the Democratic Presidential candidates, the editors of one of the country’s leading political publications, The Nation,  have concluded, “In his stands on the issues, Dennis Kucinich comes closest to embodying the ideals of this magazine.”

From The Nation.

Notice: Not Clinton, not Obama, not Edwards, not Biden, or Richardson, or Gravel or Dodd.  Dennis Kucinich!

The Nation’s editorial says what we all should know: “A vote for him would be a principled one.”

“He has been a forceful critic of the Bush administration, opposing the Patriot Act and spearheading the motion to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney. He is the only candidate to have voted against the Iraq War in 2003 and has voted against funding it ever since. Of all the serious candidates, only he and Governor Bill Richardson propose a full and immediate withdrawal from Iraq. And only Kucinich’s plan sets aside funds for reparations. Moreover, Kucinich has used his presidential campaigns to champion issues like cutting the military budget and abolishing nuclear weapons; universal, single-payer healthcare; campaign finance reform; same-sex marriage and an end to the death penalty and the war on drugs.”

Indeed, The Nation looks at each of the leading Democratic candiates.  They state that there are points which each of the candidates should be lauded on, but that they have concerns on other points.

One of the ways which you can decide on which candidate to support is to look at their positions on various issues.  Dennis has a PDF Library where you can go look at his various positions on:
