We Know how Rove etc., Plays-When do WE change the GAME?

Our outrage continues to rise and get louder. Many of us understand that it is because of this terrific item from Salon

This half-decade tsunami of scandals has had the intended effect: overload the senses, short circuit the outrage, dizzy the opposition. How many times have Bush’s opponents simply thrown their hands up in disgust, overwhelmed by the enormity of the administration’s over-reach? How many times have bloggers railed against reporters for going about the business of burying scandals and muddying waters? How many times have Americans watched in amazement as a missing girl in Aruba receives weeks of blanket coverage while lies that led to war and law-breaking at the highest levels of government get a yawn from the media?

It is a lot like watching a cat or dog chase their tail, while laughing and wondering why do they do that?

From a purely sensory perspective, it’s natural to chase the flak. We’re conditioned to respond to incoming fire. It’s reflexive. But when the fire is coming from all sides, and coming relentlessly, the urge is to stop defending and curl up and give up. This is a process the Cheneys and Roves of this world understand all too well. It’s no accident that the scandals get more and more outrageous – after all, the whole point is to have the opposition frantically racing around, chasing stories, distracted and exhausted, wearing itself out like a kitten in a catnip-doused, mouse-filled room.

The amazing thing is that so many of Bush’s opponents continue to play along. The sheer inability to put on blinders and drive one scandal home, to take it to its ultimate conclusion, is a failing of magnificent proportions. The warrantless spying fiasco is a perfect example. The day the NSA story broke, it should have been the only issue discussed by Democrats and progressive activists, the only one. Day in, day out. No matter if thirty other scandals intervened.

Bush and his team count on the opposition’s lack of focus, joyfully handing them more catnip. Perhaps that explains the ubiquitous and infamous administration smirk, most recently gracing Alberto Gonzales’ face as he humored the Senate Judiciary Committee about breaking the law.
SCANDAL FATIGUE, CATNIP & THE ‘ANGRY’ LEFT:

Knowing this, I still get caught up with my angry political emotions. I for one would appreciate a BIG reminder now and then of the real issues that keep fading and mingling with all the Rovian hair-balls.

Perhaps we could have a space on this diary page with the most important ‘outrages’ like these:

Is it time to buy a gun?

This is unbelievable. Insanity is just outside my door.

License to Murder

The NRA is working to pass a law that makes murder legal in the United States. It’s been called the “Shoot First,” “Make My Day,” or “Deadly Force” law, but call it what you want, it’s a License to Murder. That’s because instead of requiring anyone who feels threatened to retreat when possible, it allows them to fire at will, regardless of the consequences. One killer has already been set free, and other criminals and their lawyers are already drooling at the thought of using the NRA’s “Shoot First” law as a legal defense.

“Shoot First” is dangerous and unnecessary. It’s a license to murder, and, if the NRA has its way, it’s coming soon to a state near you.

LINK

With all the insanity going on in the White House and Congress, the NSA, the lock-step Republicans and religious wingnuts one can only ‘imagine’ the Land of the Free citizens if this law passed.
Just imagine all the times we’ve been mad enough to shoot first and ask questions later in the political forum. Now, imagine Christmas shopping at Walmart..
Please feel free to add your scenarios.
The wild wild West is just around the corner. And hey, if we don’t like a representaives bill being presented on the house floor we could just stand up and “POP” him ..Next!

Here’s a link you can go to to protest this insane piece of legislature

Life Support or Not? Need input PLEASE!

I am facing a major life decision and am anguishing in scenarios. I use to think that as long as my mind is working I would want to keep living. But now I am facing kidney dialysis and possible 24/7 oxygen hook-up in the very near future.

I cannot imagine living tethered to a machine.

I don’t know if it is better to have these life options presented ahead of time or if one is more fortunate to experience a major medical emergency  and then find oneself hooked to machines suddenly with little choice.

I am leaning to quality of life over quantity of days, weeks, or months via modern medicine machines.
What are the advantages? What are the disadvantages?

It has been my observation that when one allows invasive procedures one is at more risk than if one lives ‘naturally’.

What would you do?

I do not want sympathy here, I want your thoughts. Please.
I want to make this decision myself and not have it left to a loved one. I really need to hear how others think on this.
Thanks.

MY SOTU Tonite

My Speech to the Universe
Tomorrow I go in for a CT angiogram on my failing kidneys to see if I am a candidate for vascular surgery (This is like bypass surgery on the heart.) I am as stressed as Bush probably is tonight, although for extremely different reasons.
I am concerned if my Medicare will allow the surgery; I am worried about the cost of the many new meds I am sure I will have to take (I did not sign up for Medicare D because none of the plans carried all my meds and I saw its falacy.)
I am concerned about life after death issues. I need to update my living will.
I need to find out if the surgery will hurt me more than my scleroderma (scleroderma makes surgery very iffy due to hardened organs, shrunken restrictive blood vessels etc.) than letting the kidneys fail on there own, especially since my nephrologist told me they have been inefficient/failing since 1997 (None of my other doctors mentioned this fact because at that time they were more concerned about abnormal liver tests which took a year to go back to normal due to a new medicine I was put on’s side effect.)
We are the wealthiest nation in the world, (well actually 57% of all the wealth is held by 1% of the population.) We have the best medical equipment, professionals and medicine (if one can afford them); And we have a bunch of lunatics pulling the strings on almost every aspects of our lives.
I’ve instructed my husband and daughter that if I go brain dead or get dementia etc., or in too much pain to pull the plug or arrange for meds I can take to end my life. I don’t want to be a burden and now I have to add if it gets too expensive to be on dialysis, have in-home care etc., I’ll find a way to opt out earlier.
I shouldn’t have to think this way, but I am sure there are thousands, if not millions, who are having to think this way now also, thanks to the lies, and corporate/pharmecutical theft by the compassionate conservative asshole president and his kind. There is more to life (and death) than this f**king president’s sotu stupid speech tonite.
I am not looking for sympathy. I just want to bring a dose of reality on to the table for all to see and consider. Because we all will eventually, if not already, have to deal with these issues. And if things don’t get better it could actually get worse than this.
I intend to approach tomorrow and whatever else is ahead of me with my political dukes ready. I will not go out with a whimper…I hope.
We need a universal health care system in America. I think I’ve missed that boat, but I hope most of you fight for that for yourselves and your families.

Read what one conservative ‘predicts’ for us

Therefore, unless a serious independent movement can take shape,
one committed to conservative principles and constitutional government, prepare yourselves for long term Democratic majorities.

This statement comes from Chuck Baldwin a libertarian conservative who preaches and has his own radio show.
A few more tidbits.

GOP In Serious Trouble
By Chuck Baldwin
January 24, 2006

One does not have to be a prophet to see that the future of the national Republican Party is very bleak. It also seems that the GOP is willingly assisting its own demise.

In the first place, the GOP has betrayed its conservative base-big time! “Republicans may like to brag that they are the party of Ronald Reagan and are dedicated to the policies and principles for which [Reagan] stood, but they are acting more like members of the party of Lyndon Johnson.” Those words were written by
Michael Reagan, President Reagan’s son. He is right, of course.

Michael Reagan also wrote, “Republicans, those vaunted
champions of fiscal integrity and honesty in government, showed just how they are dedicated to my dad’s principles by greedily looting the federal budget of billions of dollars to fund their pet projects and keep the voters back home happy and in a mood to re-elect them.”

and this:

The sad truth is, in terms of fiscal responsibility, the Bush-led GOP have become the most irresponsible spenders in U.S. history!
Instead of re-electing them, we should be prosecuting them for acts of criminality!

The worm continues to turn as the beat goes on. Where Bush succeeded in dividing America, maybe the repugs in congress will succeed in actually uniting us again- not in all ways, of course, but any little improvement would be nice for a change.

Fox News reports that Bin Laden is dead

In Dec. 2001.

What’s up with this? Is Bin Laden dead or alive?

Is this news article real? Did we forget or not read it?
How do we prove it?

Report: Bin Laden Already Dead
Wednesday, December 26, 2001

Usama bin Laden has died a peaceful death due to an untreated lung complication, the Pakistan Observer reported, citing a Taliban leader who allegedly attended the funeral of the Al Qaeda leader.

“The Coalition troops are engaged in a mad search operation but they would never be able to fulfill their cherished goal of getting Usama alive or dead,” the source said.

Bin Laden, according to the source, was suffering from a serious lung complication and succumbed to the disease in mid-December, in the vicinity of the Tora Bora mountains. The source claimed that bin Laden was laid to rest honorably in his last abode and his grave was made as per his Wahabi belief.

About 30 close associates of bin Laden in Al Qaeda, including his most trusted and personal bodyguards, his family members and some “Taliban friends,” attended the funeral rites. A volley of bullets was also fired to pay final tribute to the “great leader.”

The Taliban source who claims to have seen bin Laden’s face before burial said “he looked pale … but calm, relaxed and confident.”

Asked whether bin Laden had any feelings of remorse before death, the source vehemently said “no.” Instead, he said, bin Laden was proud that he succeeded in his mission of igniting awareness amongst Muslims about hegemonistic designs and conspiracies of “pagans” against Islam. Bin Laden, he said, held the view that the sacrifice of a few hundred people in Afghanistan was nothing, as those who laid their lives in creating an atmosphere of resistance will be adequately rewarded by Almighty Allah.

When asked where bin Laden was buried, the source said, “I am sure that like other places in Tora Bora, that particular place too must have vanished.”

What do we do with this?

Iraq turns to Iran for Electricity

While Bush’s NSA is busy spying on us, Iraq is conducting their newly found democracy to fix what Bush broke did while chasing terrorists. What happened to all the money Bush demanded to reconstruct Iraq’s infra-structures?

I am beginning to think that Iraq was The Diversion Tactic for us peons while Bush & Co. plundered American’s constitution.

1/The Daily Star, Lebanon–IRAQ NEEDS $20 BILLION TO REHABILITATE ELECTRICTY SECTOR (Iraq needs $20 billion over the next five years to solve a chronic electricity crisis after U.S. reconstruction funds failed to flick the right switches, the Iraqi electricity minister said. “When you lose electricity the country is destroyed, nothing works, all industry is down and terrorist activity is increased,” Mohsen Shlash said Tuesday. … “The American donation is almost finished and it was not that effective. They did a few power plants, yes, but that definitely is not worth $4.7 billion,” said the minister, adding that some of the work carried out was worth just one-tenth of the money being spent.)

2/Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Iran–IRAN, IRAQ DISCUSS BUILDING ELECTRICITY TRANSFER PLANTS (Iran’s Charge d’Affaires in Iraq Hassan Kazemi met here Monday with Iraqi electricity Minister Abd al-Muhsin Shalash. They discussed implementing the signed agreement including the expediting building nine electricity transfer plants. Shalash expressed his country’s readiness for reconstruction of its electricity sector with Iran’s assistance. He also called for implementing electricity projects from credit allocated by Iran for Iraq’s reconstruction drive. After the meeting, Kazemi told IRNA that given Iraq’s electricity needs and Iran’s experiences in the field, the electricity sector is the highlight of the two neighbors’ cooperation. … Iran has allocated one billion dollars to the reconstruction of Iraqi infrastructural projects, he said, adding the major portion of the fund will be spent on electricity industry.)

I have no problem with Iraq turning to a neighbor for some of life’s necessities like electricity, but with the saber rattling Bush is doing with Iran, I am concerned about this ‘arrangement.’

Democrat Reform Plan via Rep. Slaughter

*Please feel free distribute this information as widely as you can.  Thanks again. -LMS-(cross posted from dkos)

I am surprised that there’s no mention of yesterday’s Democrats Reform plan here. I found it uplifting and very encouraging.

Rep. Louise Slaughter has encouraged her post on Dkos to be spread out so here it is:

(UPDATED) Democrats Come Out Swinging for Honest Leadership in Washington
by Rep Louise Slaughter [Subscribe]
Wed Jan 18, 2006 at 08:44:08 AM PDT
Please only recommend this diary if you think others should see the information I’m posting.

Since all of a sudden the Republicans have discovered the need to “reform” Washington, Democrats are setting the record straight in Washington today.  I want to let you know about a major event this afternoon in Washington around 2 pm EST (LIVE on CSPAN and webcast on www.democrats.gov), at which I will be speaking along with Democratic Leaders Reid & Pelosi and Sen. Obama to highlight the growing Republican culture of corruption, and how Democrats are fighting for honest leadership and open government.

More details below.

Rep Louise Slaughter’s diary :: ::
UPDATE 3:45 pm EST: Thanks again for all the feedback folks. I appreciate all the support, and wonderful feedback from y’all. My staff and I will be going over all of them. Here is a quick note on programming change. My scheduled appearance on Lehrer’s News Hour has been rescheduled. I will not appear on the show tonight. We will schedule an appearance on that show some other time. However you can still catch me on national television to continued talking about these issues. As one of you noted below, I will be appearing on CSPAN’s Washington Journal tomorrow morning from 9:15 am to 10 am EST to talk about these issues. Please tune in and thanks again for making me feel so welcome to your wonderful community. – LMS

As requested here is a transcript of my speech today.

Republicans have given us a government too corrupt to sustain itself any longer, too undemocratic to even pretend to be a democracy.  So this afternoon Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senator Barak Obama, and I will be speaking in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress to unveil the Democrats’ Honest Leadership and Open Government Act.  Most of the Congressional Democratic Delegation will be joining us at this event, where we will spotlight the Republican “pay for play” politics that put special interests ahead of the priorities of the American people.  The event is scheduled to start around 2:00 pm EST, and will be web-cast LIVE on CSPAN and webcast at www.democrats.gov. Here are the highlights of the proposals we are unveiling today:

Close the Revolving Door. Close the revolving door between the Congress and lobbying firms by doubling (from one year to two) the cooling-off period during which lawmakers, senior Congressional staff, and Executive Branch officials are prohibited from lobbying their former offices. Eliminate floor privileges for former Members of Congress and officers of the Senate and House who return to lobby.

Toughen Public Disclosure of Lobbyist Activity. Significantly expand the information lobbyists must disclose – including campaign contributions and client fees. Require them to file disclosure reports electronically, and increase the frequency of those filings. Require lobbyists to certify that they did not violate the rules, and make them subject to criminal penalties for false certifications.

Ban Lobbyist Gifts and Travel. Prohibit the receipt of gifts, including gifts of meals, entertainment and travel, from lobbyists.

Shut Down Pay-to-Play Schemes Like the “K Street Project.” End efforts like the “K Street Project,” which Republicans created to tell corporations and lobbying firms whom they should hire in exchange for political access.

Disclosure of Outside Job Negotiations. Requires lawmakers to disclose when they are negotiating private sector jobs, and requires Executive Branch officials who are negotiating private sector jobs to receive approval from the independent Office of Government Ethics.

Prohibit “Dead of Night” Special Interest Provisions. Require that all conference committee meetings be open to the public and that members of the conference committee have a public opportunity to vote on all amendments. Make copies of conference reports available to Members, and post them publicly on the Internet, 24 hours before consideration (unless waived by a supermajority vote).

Zero Tolerance for Contract Cheaters. Restore accountability and openness in federal contracting by subjecting major contract actions to public disclosure and aggressive competition; criminally prosecuting contractors who cheat taxpayers, with penalties including suspension and debarment; imposing stiff criminal and civil penalties for wartime fraud on government contracting; prohibiting contractors with conflicts of interest from conducting oversight or writing contract requirements they could bid on; mandating full disclosure of contract overcharges; creating tough penalties for improper no-bid contracts; and closing the revolving door between federal contract officials and private contractors.

Prohibit Cronyism in Key Appointments. End rampant cronyism by requiring that any individual appointed to a position involving public safety possess proven credentials, and training or expertise in one or more areas relevant to the position.
As mentioned above, as of right now I am scheduled to appear on PBS’s News Hour with Jim Lehrer tonight to further discuss the Democrats’ comprehensive ethics reform package.  Moreover, I will talk about the House Republicans’ assault on the existing ethics process in the People’s House.

Speaking of which, I also wanted to share with you excerpts from multiple press releases my office sent out last week, questioning the Republican commitment to any kind ethics or lobbying “reform,” when their record (as detailed a background posted below) clearly shows that the DeLay Republicans have fought at every turn to protect the disgraced, indicted, former Majority Leader:

Here are excerpts from my statements on the House Republican’s commitment to ethics reform:
“The attempts to reform the ethics process in Congress and to insist on accountability in government have been entirely Democratic,” she continued. “For over a year, starting when Rep. Chris Bell filed his initial ethics complaint in 2004, Republicans have fought and resisted any and all attempts to infuse ethics into the business of Washington and have engaged in an active campaign of cover-up and retribution.”

“What we are seeing now from prominent Republicans is nothing more than damage control masquerading as real reform,” she concluded, “but the American people won’t be fooled.”

And, here are my comments on getting the Ethics Committee kickstarted and the need for a comprehensive ethics package that goes beyond lobbying:
“We need ethics investigations in the House and we need them now.  The Ethics Committee must get to work and aggressively investigate the ethics and corruption cases engulfing the House, including all of those involving Members associated with Jack Abramoff,” Rep. Slaughter said. “The Republicans have repeatedly shredded the rules of this Congress and the American people have had enough.   Kick-starting this Committee is the most important step to returning a high ethical standard to Congress.”

“It has long been obvious that the influence lobbyists hold over numerous Republicans must be put to a stop,” she said. “But what we need is a comprehensive ethics package, one that goes beyond lobbying, and will make ethical conduct, and an aggressive Ethics Committee, as important to the Members of this Congress as they should have always been.”
Lastly, here is the legislative background on the House Republicans’ all out assault on ethics process to protect Tom DeLay: For those of you who have been following this story of the all out GOP assault on any semblance of an ethics process in the House here is a step by step background on how they have undermined the ethics process every step of the way. This information will be useful to you so that you can all keep calling them out when they start talking about any kind of “reform”:

LEGISLATIVE BACKGROUND ON THE IMPLOSION OF ETHICS PROCESS IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENATIVES

HOUSE REPUBLICANS ATTACKED DELAY’S ACCUSER FOR FILING COMPLAINT CHARGING ETHICS ABUSES:

Attacked former Congressman Chris Bell for filing an ethics complaint against DeLay, the first in seven years: Republicans attacked former Congressman Chris Bell for filing an ethics complaint against DeLay, the first ethics complaint filed in seven years.  DeLay went so far as to call Bell a “partisan stalker.”  His lawyer, former Republican Rep. Ed Bethune, accused Bell of libel and tried to initiate contempt of Congress hearings against him.  Rep. LaHood (R-IL) immediately proposed legislation that would have blocked legitimately elected, standing members such as Bell from even filing complaints. Rep. Doolittle (R-CA) went as far as threatening that the Republicans “are going to have to respond in kind” comparing it to a matter of “you kill my dog, I’ll kill your cat.” This retaliatory campaign on the part of Republicans was designed to damage the credibility of the ethics process and further discourage Members from filing complaints with the Ethics Committee.  [“DeLay to Be Subject of Ethics Complaint; Democrat’s Wide-Ranging Charges Break Unwritten Truce Between Parties,” The Washington Post, 6/15/04; “Shooting the Messenger,” Houston Chronicle, 11/22/04; “LaHood Blasts Ethics Charges Like Bell’s,” Roll Call, 6/17/04; “Ethics Panel May Face Busy Lame-Duck Session,” Roll Call, 10/12/04]

HOUSE REPUBLICANS KEPT CHANGING ETHICS RULES TO PROTECT TOM DELAY:
Changed House ethics rules to let a complaint die in the Ethics committee: Changed House ethics rules to let a complaint die if the ethics committee cannot decide whether it should be investigated within 45 days. [“Warning: Ethics-Free Zone,” The Washington Post Editorial, 3/14/05]

Changed House ethics rules to allow a Republican veto of ethics’ investigations: Changed House ethics rules to allow a party to block an ethics investigation by voting along party lines, thus denying a majority vote to allow it to proceed. [” After Retreat, G.O.P. Changes House Ethics Rule,” The New York Times, 1/5/05]

Facing intense public scrutiny and pressure from Congressional Democrats Republicans  reversed their own rules changes designed to protect DeLay: House Republicans did an about face by reversing their changes in the aforementioned ethics rules in April of 2005, after facing an intense pressure from House Democrats led by Leader Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV), the ranking member of the House Ethics Committee, and Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY), the ranking members of the House Rules Committee.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS CHANGED INTERNAL PARTY RULES TO PROTECT TOM DELAY:
Changed an 11-year-old conference rule that required party leaders to step down from their leadership post if they were indicted by a state grand jury : On Nov. 17, 2004, the House Republican Conference voted to change an 11-year-old party rule that required party leaders to step down from their leadership post if they were indicted by a grand jury. Their action came shortly after Texas district attorney Ronnie Earle indicted three of DeLay’s associates on charges of violating state campaign laws, The conference reversed itself on Jan. 3 and reinstated the rule. [Richard Simon, ” GOP Backs Off on Ethics Changes”, Los Angeles Times, 1/4/2005]
HOUSE REPUBLICANS PURGED THE HOUSE ETHICS COMMITTEE TO PROTECT DELAY:
Removed Chairman of the House Ethics Committee who oversaw three admonishments of Tom DeLay:Speaker Dennis Hastert removed Rep. Joel Hefley (R-CO) as chairman of the Ethics Committee that  oversaw three admonishments of DeLay in 2004. Prior to his removal, Hefley said of Republican colleagues he would not name: “They said I was hurting my career here. The implication is that some form of retribution would be taken.” Hefley also told a newspaper after the third DeLay admonishment: “I’ve been attacked; I’ve been threatened.” [ “Ethics Panel’s Chair Is the Toughest Seat in the House,” The Washington Post, 1/7/05; “Hefley: ‘I was threatened’,” The Hill, 10/13/04]

Replaced two members of the Ethics Committee who both admonished DeLay and voted against the Republican Conference rule changes to protect DeLay: Replaced the two members of the Ethics Committee, Rep. Kenny Hulshof (R-MO) and Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH), who both admonished DeLay and voted against the Republican Conference rule changes to protect DeLay, with two Republican loyalists, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and Tom Cole (R-OK), who both contributed to DeLay’s legal defense fund.  “Ethics Purge,” The Washington Post, February 5, 2005]

Fired several longtime committee staffers: Rep. Doc Hastings (R-WA), who replaced Hefley as Ethics Committee chairman, fired several longtime non-partisan committee staffers, including John Vargo, the staff director and chief counsel, and Paul Lewis, a counsel. Both Vargo and Lewis had been working on the committee since before Hefley was its chairman. [ “Critics Slam Hastings’ Dismissal of Ethics Staff,” Roll Call, February 17, 2005]
REPUBLICANS HAVE STALLED ANY INVESTIGATIONS OF DELAY AND OTHER SCANDALS ENGULFING DOZENS OF HOUSE REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS:
GOP Ethics Committee Chairman Doc Hastings Stalling on DeLay Probe: In April, House Ethics Committee Chairman Doc Hastings had pledged to launch an immediate probe of Tom DeLay if Democrats agreed to cooperate with him and allow him to organize the Standards of Official Conduct Committee, as it is officially known.  Rep. Hastings has now changed his tune, delaying any possible DeLay probe by saying, “We’re going to start all over.” [Alexander Bolton, “DeLay probe put into limbo,” The Hill, 12/14/05]

GOP Leadership Scheduling longer Recess to Buy DeLay Valuable Time: The GOP leadership scheduled the second House session of the 109th Congress to begin on Jan. 31, 2006 – that is, after a holiday break of more than a month, and two weeks after Senators are due to return to Washington. The late start will give indicted former Majority Leader Tom Delay valuable time during which his money laundering case in Texas can be resolved. As new leadership elections will not occur until the House is back in session, Republicans had hoped their maneuver would allow Mr. DeLay to reclaim his former position. [Ben Pershing, “House Plants to Sit Out January, Roll Call, 12/7/05, Rick Klein, “House Republicans quietly pushing for new leadership,” the Boston Globe, 12/7/05]
HOUSE DEMOCRATS HAVE REPEATEDLY PROPOSED REFORMS IN AN ATTEMPT TO RESOLVE THE BROKEN HOUSE ETHICS CRISIS

House Democrats fought back the Republican attempts to change House ethics rules to protect Tom DeLay:
Mollohan resolution: Rep. Alan B. Mollohan (D-WV), the ranking member of the House Ethics Committee, introduced a resolution (H Res. 131) March 1, 2005 that would undo the Republican changes to the House ethics rules made at the beginning of the 109th Congress to protect Tom DeLay.

Pelosi’s “privileged” resolution recommending creation of a bipartisan task force: Pelosi introduced a “privileged” resolution March 15, 2005, that would have established a bipartisan task force to recommend changes to House ethics rules.  Her resolution failed along party lines with one Republican exception. (To read the resolution and House debate on it,  click here.  For a breakdown of how House members voted,  click here. [ Hefley joins Dems on ethics,” The Hill, 3/16/2005]

Slaughter’s demand to Rules Committee Chair David Dreir to hold hearings on House ethics process: On March 17, 2005, Congresswoman Slaughter (D-NY), ranking member of the House Rules Committee, asked committee chair Dreier (R-CA) in writing to hold hearings on the House ethics process and allow the Mollohan resolution to move forward.
Slaughter’s Recommendations to restore the deliberative process in the “People’s House”:In March of 2005, Rep. Slaughter as the ranking member of the House Rules Committee proposed the following set of recommendations to the Republican House leadership and the Republican Members of the House Rules Committee, as first step in restoring the deliberative process in the “People’s House,” calling for an open and transparent House of Representatives, allowing “the full and free airing of conflicting opinions through hearings, debates, and amendments for the purpose of developing and improving legislation deserving of the respect and support of the people.”:
*Open up the process by allowing more serious amendments. Republican leaders should not be afraid of lively debate and close votes on amendments; instead, they should welcome them as a sign that the democratic process is working in the House.
*Allow more bills to be considered under open rules
*More consideration of major, controversial legislation and fewer suspension bills
*Fewer late-night or early-morning “emergencies” and more regular order
*Give members three days to read conference reports
[“Broken Promises: The Death of Deliberative Democracy: A Congressional Report on the Unprecedented Erosion of the Democratic Process in the 108 th Congress,” Compiled by the House Rules Committee Minority Office, The Honorable Louise M. Slaughter, Ranking Member]

Meehan/Emanuel lobbying reform legislation:Congressmen Meehan (D-MA) and Emanuel (D-IL) introduced lobbying reform legislation on May 17, 2005.  The Special Interest Lobbying and Ethics Accountability Act would:
*Increase lobbying disclosure requirements and make disclosed information more accessible.
*Slow the revolving door between Capitol Hill and K-Street for members of Congress and staff.
*Crack down on privately funded travel for members of Congress and staff.
*Strengthen oversight and enforcement of lobbying rules.
House Democrats rules reform package:Congressmen Obey (D-WI), Frank (D-MA), Price (D-NC), and Allen (D-ME) announced a reform package in early December of 2005 that would, among other things:
*Put a stop to lobbyists funding or arranging Congressional travel.
*Curb lobbying on the House floor by former members of Congress.
*Prohibit members from using earmarks to buy votes.
*Crack down on the practice of holding votes open to allow for more time through intimidation to twist arms and change votes.
*Give members of Congress a chance to fully read legislation before voting on it.

Some NSA Spying Techniques

I’ve probably just added myself to NSA’s roster, but being spied on infuriates me so I say “Bring ’em on!”

Out of curiosity I often go to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA website and do random search inquiries.
Today I did searches of the NSA, sensor programs (including HAARP-a favorite curiosity of mine), crowd control etc. Well you get the picture.

I came across some internet search engine programs that they ‘may’ be using. These search engines are called: EELD and GENOA that I found in this DARPA document.

A tasty tidbit I will share is this one:

Needless to say, the monitoring of various left-leaning, so-called anarchist, and ecological groups can be carried out, significantly, without the “invasion” of privacy. Because the Genoa Projects work with statistical evidence, semi-passive tracking, and linkages of disparate bits of information, the individual identities of anyone being tracked is not necessarily important. So long as their movements — especially as a group — fall into certain analytic templates: website traffic, international phone calls, purchases of survival-oriented gear, etc. With the continued integration of network transactions into Everyday Life and the decline of the cash economy coupled with increased Security across all levels of society, the individual identity becomes irrelevant until the moment of arrest, processing, and prosecution. At such a point in this struggle to secure Freedom, the transgressing individual has already made his or her identity public, and falls squarely into established constitutional algorithms.
