CT-Sen HQ: Exclusive Photos & Standard Asks, For the Green

A twist on my front-paged post over at DailyKos. A few exclusive images from the campaign trail for the green to enjoy before anyone else. They’re at the bottom of the entry!

All spin completely aside, I’d be lying if I said anyone has the faintest idea of what will happen next Tuesday.  There is no reliable likely voter model, so you can throw all polls out the window.  That’s part of the reason you see such a big difference between the Q-Poll, Rasmussen, and internal polling by each campaign.

The only thing we have control over is our GOTV operation.  And for the next eight days, it all comes down to one thing…

Votes.
Fortunately, Senator Lieberman’s campaign has made it easy to predict their next move.  You simply take what they accuse Ned of, and assume that is part of their campaign strategy.  For their latest jedi/rovian mind trick, they are the ones literally attempting to purchase this election now.

Since July 20, Senator Lieberman has collected nearly $100,000 a day, contributed by those who profit from war, high gas prices and expensive prescription drugs.  That’s who is paying for their latest tactic: hiring 4,000 staffers (at $60 a day) who will pour into CT from out-of-state, spearheading their field operation.

Do the math… you can afford a lot of things when you’re campaign has raised $10 million dollars so far.

The New Haven Register article this morning was telling.  Sean Smith (Joe’s campaign manager) indicated they only have 200 staff and volunteers signed up with the campaign.  That’s pretty poor when you compare it to the thousands from within CT alone who have signed up to help on our website.

<u>Contribute</u&gt
That field operation costs money, and we are turning to you one last time to not only fund, but staff our effort.  Between you and I, I would have never guess just how damn expensive running such a massive ground operation actually is.  And remember, Ned will personally match all contributions made online between now and August 8.

<u>Getitng Involved in the Field Campaign</u&gt
If you are in Connecticut, please call up one of our many field offices to get involved.  There are daily canvasses and phone banks going on from now until next Tuesday evening.  If you call ahead, the office will prepare meaningful work for your arrival.

<u>From Nearby CT</u&gt
If you are from out of the area, start to consider coming down to the CT this weekend and staying through the election.  I am working along with FDLer “Christina” to compile a handy web-page that includes local hotel listings and upcoming events taking place in the area of field offices throughout the state.

<u>Family, Friends and Neighbors</u&gt
Finally, the “Family, Friends and Neighbor” campaign.  So far, thousands of postcards have been sent — it has been a very effective tool in furthering our focus on person-to-person communication.  But we can push it even further.

We need people to forward the tool to their own family, friends and neighbors — even if you personally don’t know anyone in Connecticut.  Maybe they do?  Maybe they’ll forward it to friends that know people here?  Bottom line, the use of these two tools is critical to the campaign’s success.

1.) Send a Postcard to family, friends or neighbors inside CT (link)

2.) Invite your personal networks to use the family, friends and neighbor tool. (link)

Neglecting the Green and "Go for it Mr. Lamont"

We’re not neglecting “the green,” believe me.  In fact, this is going to be the first place I post an entry about Ned Lamont’s newest commercial.  I know Martin (and others) have written about the campaign several times, but maybe this is a good time to introduce the campaign, and myself, to the rest of you.

Ned Lamont.  Maybe you’ve heard of him?  =)

We’re going to beat Joe Lieberman on August 8th.  And we’re going to win again this November.  When the ballots are cast and counted, no one will be able to refer to CT’s Junior Senator as “George Bush’s favorite Democrat.”
Hi. I’m Tim.  I haven’t appeared in any television shows with Kent Brockman, but I have worked for a favorite candidate or two of yours in the past on the Internet side of things.  Paul Hackett and Chuck Pennacchio, for example.  I went to work for Chuck because I hoped that campaign would be the fight for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party.  And while that one never quite materialized into all that I had hoped it would, this campaign in Connecticut is.

You see, everywhere Ned travels, the house is packed.  The picture to the right was taken at one of our Saturday morning volunteer meetings. This campaign is not just about Senator Lieberman dissapointing Democrats time and time again, it’s about Ned Lamont — and electing a Senator we will all be proud of in Washington, D.C.  The picture below is from a David Sirota book signing.  The campaign expected about 20 visitors — 60 to 75 showed up.  There was so little room, I had to step outside and snap this photo:

And while supporters of Ned believe in what we are fighting for — Senator Lieberman’s supporters mock us.  They have litterally called us “weirdos” and “radicals” seeking to “terrorize [the senator] throughout the summer.”  Senator Lieberman called our campaign a “jihad.”  The choice of language and framing is no mistake.

But we march on, and election day is on August 8.  Senator Lieberman has promised to run as a Democrat, but refuses to rule out a potential Independent bid.  It will undermine the party yet again if he chose to do so, but I think we’re all quite used to that by now.

But back to Ned, the person, and the commercial linked above the fold in the image.  In addition to being a successful businessman, Ned is a volunteer teacher at a Bridgeport, CT inner-city public school.  Today, we released the campaign’s newest ad, featuring some of his students.

Oh, I’ll be back.  But before I start spamming ya’ll — I thought an introduction would be appropriate.  I’ll be around to answer any questions you might have about the candidate or the campaign.

Howard Dean v. Ken Mehlman: Dueling Op-Eds

So, this is my first post over at the Trib since leaving Chuck Pennacchio (thanks for the support with that!) and Sherrod Brown/Paul Hackett. Before I get into Governor Dean’s op-ed in The Hill today, I just wanted to say what’s up, and let you know that they finally let one of us (the folks generally holding the pitchforks and torches outside the gate) into the DNC.  That said, know that I am here for all of you should you have questions/concerns/ideas: tagarist — at — dnc dot org. Consider me a voice for all of us on the inside. — Tim

Dean in Short:

The future of the Democratic Party is organizing on the local level, funded by everyday Americans, standing together, and working towards things that matter like: providing jobs and health care for all Americans, a strong education system, and holding those accountable who are responsible for the culture of corruption in Washington, D.C.  Because of this, we will win House and Senate seats in 2006.

Ken Mehlman in Short:

War is peace, stay the course, laws protecting individuals filing for bankruptcy and seeking protection from creditors are “outdated,” terror terror terror, WMD, cut and run, fight the terrorists in Iraq and not here, Samuel Alito and legislate from the bench.

Governor Dean’s full text in the extended entry.

2005 has been a good year for Democrats. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has trained and hired local organizers on the ground in 49 states. These organizers are critical to our victories in 2006 and beyond.

We’ve shattered the 2001 post-presidential-year fundraising record, despite not being able to collect soft money. Through our grassroots Democracy Bonds program, we’ve doubled the number of monthly givers to the DNC.

Our leaders in the House and Senate stuck together on issues such as fiscal responsibility and Social Security, and they continue to pressure the administration for the truth about manipulating prewar intelligence, sending a strong message that Democrats will fight for what is right.

And for the first time in recent memory, the DNC, the Democratic House and Senate leadership and Democratic mayors and governors are sitting at the same table to create policies and strategies for restoring honest government and fiscal responsibility to America.

The early results in California, Virginia and New Jersey are good. Local races in St. Louis, Parkersburg and Minnesota, where we picked up seats that had been Republican for up to 58 years, are even better.

This is a solid beginning, but there is more we must do. Cutting the fundraising advantage the other party enjoys from 3-1 to 2-1 is good but not good enough. Sticking together on the budget and supporting Rep. John Murtha’s (D-Pa.) great courage are good starts, but we need to continue to work together on judicial nominations, environmental legislation, trade and jobs to send effectively the message that we are again ready to lead the American people with purpose and in a fundamentally new direction.

In 2006, Democrats will take back the House and the Senate. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have done an excellent job recruiting strong candidates, and we are already investing in the local infrastructure to ensure they win. But the key to winning is running a national campaign based on our different vision and the themes that Democrats around the country have put forward.

Americans of all political persuasions are tired of and worried about the culture of corruption that Republicans have brought to Washington and to so many statehouses around America. We will offer real ethics reform and election reform so that the Government Accountability Office can report in three years that we can have confidence in our voting machines.

We will offer a program for American jobs that stay in America and for energy independence that will create jobs and wean us off of foreign oil.

The only president to balance a budget in the past 37 years was a Democrat. We will do that again.

We will offer a real tax-reform program that helps the middle class pay for it by eliminating the shocking waste and giveaways the Republican Congress and president have added to the budget and subtracted from revenues in the past five years.

We will join the 36 other countries that manage to include all their citizens in their health-insurance systems while simultaneously balancing their budgets.

We will provide a strong public education system by avoiding bureaucratic federal mandates and taxpayer-funded puff pieces. We will rely on local control while requiring real standards that work nationally.

We will offer Americans real security. We all agree that 2006 must be a transition year in Iraq. While we may have different ideas about tactics and timing, it’s clear we must change course. The vision of strategic redeployment set forward by Brian Katulis and former Reagan Defense Department official Lawrence Korb offers a likely roadmap to success that we can coalesce around.

We will offer the American people a government that is honest in preparing for any deployment of American troops and honor their sacrifice when they come home.

Most important, we will talk about Democratic values, which are America’s values.

The vast majority of Americans believe it is immoral to lets kids go hungry. We agree. The other party cuts school lunches (they just can’t seem to leave that one alone.)

Americans believe it is immoral that not everyone has some kind of health insurance. We agree.

The vast majority of Americans believe that government overreaching into personal and family decisions is wrong. We agree.

Americans believe that it is immoral to leave huge debts to our children and grandchildren. We agree.

Americans believe that using issues to divide us as a country to win elections is bad for America. We will restore America’s sense of community.

Together, America can do better. And in 2006, the Democrats will lead America to do just that.

OH-2: Five Points & $285,000 GOP Ad Buy

[promoted by BooMan]

2004 – 72% to 28%

2002 – 74% to 26%

2000 – 74% to 23%

1998 – 76% to 24%

In fact, only one Democrat has received more than 30% of the vote in over 20 years.  With less than one week to go, this race is within 5 points.  And not only is it within five points, but Jean Schmidt is tanking.  And no, I am not sitting in my hotel room with a .pdf file in-front of me.  Here is what I am hearing, so take it fwiw…

(Cross-Post from Swing State Project)
The NRCC conducted a poll earlier this week (there is another poll in the field, but no idea by who), that showed the poor numbers.  The numbers were leaked by a Republican who is part of a group that doesn’t see eye to eye with Schmidt on certain issues.

In response, the National Republican Congressional Campaign Committee has just dumped $285,000 into an astounding 1800+ point ad buy that will start running Friday through Tuesday.  This is public record.

Now Jean Schmidt is scurrying to round up to volunteers from her primary opposition in a last ditch effort to counter Paul Hackett’s overwhelming advantage on-the-ground.  To the shock of the GOP, Hackett is also going toe-to-toe on television as well in terms of dollars.  The free press because of Paul’s service has been huge as well.  I overheard the campaign manager (I believe) of Schmidt’s campaign say to a Hackett staffer, “I have no idea how the hell you guys are raising this much money.”  They are worried.

I don’t know what to say, other than this is a grassroots takeover.  Whatever Paul Hackett accomplishes in this race will be because of us.  The work done on the blogs, the volunteer and fundraising support of DFA, and Howard Dean’s pledge to fight it out in all 50 states; if MoveOn were to jump in, the future of the Democratic Party will be completely represented in overcoming the most insurmountable of odds.  When the ballots were cast on November 2nd, this is the moment we all looked towards.  When Howard Dean was elected DNC Chair, this was the moment we all looked towards.  In the first federal election since the fiasco in 2004, the grassroots of the party banding together, taking on the most dauting of tasks, and winning.  Who would have thought we had such an opportunity, so soon.

While Jean Schmidt and her allies run a slash-and-burn campaign, attempting to “Swift Boat” Paul Hackett, the message is simple, if we can win here, we can win anywhere.

Down the stretch we go.

UPDATE:: Some guy has been walking down the street outside Hackett HQ a few hours ago, taking down everyones license plates and making phones calls while walking in and out of Republican HQ across the street.

We also got a strange visit from a Representative of President Bush that I will have more on later.  It was pretty funny, cause it was basically an idle threat that I can’t say anything else about right now.

Definitive Rick Santorum Diary: Your Talking Points

As I have said before, my position on Chuck Pennacchio’s U.S. Senate campaign allows me the opportunity to learn a lot more about Rick Santorum (R-VA/PA) than any American should have to.

Actually, it is probably for the best.  It allows me to accumulate the information and pass it along to people like you and I who struggle every day to get a message of progress out to our friends, neighbors, co-workers, relatives, and the rest of the country.

We do so in name of saving our democracy from the theocrats and dishonest brokers in Congress and the White House who will not hesitate to undermine the Constitution because the 218 year old document is not in-line with their vision for tyrannical theocracy.

Leading the charge against democracy and the Constitution in the United States Senate is Rick Santorum.  Here is what you need to know about the Senator from VA/PA.
The foundation

When average Americans are asked the question, “what is the most important characteristic you look for in a politician,” honesty is almost always at the top of the list for responses.

What we have in Pennsylvania, is a Senator, Rick Santorum who has an overwhelming track record of dishonesty and hypocricy.  You cannot trust him to do as he says because he will always put the views of the extremist wing of the Republican Party before the interests of everyday Pennsylvanians.

There is no reason that the people of Pennsylvania would re-elect him if they had any idea the levels to which he takes dishonesty and hypocrisy in Washington, D.C.

This is going to be the Presidential race of 2006.  In no small way, this will be a national effort–by both sides.  That said, here are some stories you can share with your friends and family about the Senator from VA/PA–wherever you live.

—————————————————————————————————

Amtrak

Fact:

4,800,000 million Pennsylvanians use Amtrak and 3,000 Pennsylvanians are employed by the rail.

Quote:

“I support the current funding levels in the president’s proposed budget,” Santorum. said.

Fact:

The Bush Budget that Santorum supports “will not propose continued Federal subsidies for Amtrak.”

Dishonesty

MR. RUSSERT:  Senator Santorum, your Republican colleague from Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter, said the president’s elimination of federal subsidies for Amtrak is unacceptable. […]

SEN. SANTORUM:  It’s not acceptable to me, either.

MR. RUSSERT:  But you’re going to fight the president?

SEN. SANTORUM:  I’ll fight him on that money, yes.

The Reckoning: Santorum’s Vote

Santorum was the only Senator from the Northeast to vote against the amendment that would have restored funding to Amtrak.

Hypocrisy:

From an Op-Ed Santorum penned in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

At a time when Amtrak is setting ridership records and as congestion at our airports and on the highways continues to increase, it would be a grave mistake to cut the federal funds that keep Amtrak operating.

Santorum Scoffs at Pennsylvania Taxapers and Struggling School Districts

If Santorum gave a damn about Pennsylvanian’s hard earned tax dollars or school districts across the commonwealth, he would have thought twice about bilking the Penn Hills School district out of over $100,000.

Fact:

The Penn Hills School District in Pennsylvania paid over $100,000 for his Children’s “cyber schooling.

Fact:

Only Pennsylvania residents, and specifically residents of Penn Hills are eligible to have the tab for their children’s cyber schooling picked up by the district.

Fact:

Rick Santorum and his family live in Leesburg, Virginia.

Fact:

This is NOT the Pennsylvania home of Rick Santorum, yet it is the one he claims.  In order for him to have legally claimed the homestead exemption — 10 people would have to share it’s 1.5 stories, 3 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms

Worst of Washington, D.C. Politics:

Did Rick Santorum conduct a push-poll against the Penn Hills School District for revenge?  The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wants to know.

Those surveyed said the first question was whether the $8,000 per pupil the district spends was a good return on taxpayer money considering some low scores on state assessment tests and other measures.

The pollster also asked whether the person believed a new school board is needed and then asked the person to rate how each incumbent board member was doing, from excellent to poor.

Then the pollster asked whether they believed the challenges to Santorum’s residency in Penn Hills were politically motivated. Santorum lives in Virginia with his family but owns a house and claims residency in Penn Hills.

Fact:

Rick Santorum takes dishonesty to a whole new level claiming that the current Penn Hills case about him isn’t even about him (My head came real close to exploding when I read this quote)

Santorum’s spokeswoman, Christine Shott, said that although the senator is not a party to the dispute, “he is interested in the proceedings, and obviously disagrees with the school district’s objections.”

————————————————————-

I got your tort reform, Mr. & Mrs. Santorum

Fact:

Rick Santorum is a staunch advocate at capping civil awards at $250,000 per victim.

As a United States Senator, Rick Santorum has repeatedly supported limits on consumers’ rights to seek compensation in the courts. In 1994, Santorum sponsored the Comprehensive Family Health Access and Savings Act that would have capped non-economic damages at $250,000.

In a 1995 floor speech supporting damages caps, Santorum said, “We have a much too costly legal system. It is one that makes us uncompetitive and inefficient, and one that is not fair to society as a whole. While we may have people, individuals, who hit the jackpot and win the lottery in some cases, that is not exactly what our legal system should be designed to do.”

Fact:

Rick Santorum’s wife, Karen, was recently sought a  $500,000 judgement from a Virginia court, claiming a Virginia chiropracter had caused her permanent back pain after his negligence.

Fact:

Rick Santorum testified on her behalf, citing her inability to campaign for him as a reason the family apparently deserved two times the judgement the Senator believes should serve as a cap for average Americans.

At trial, the Senator testified that his wife should be compensated for the pain and suffering caused by a botched spine adjustment, claiming that she had to “treat her back gingerly” and could no longer accompany him on the campaign trail.

Fact:

Rick Santorum’s wife was originally rewarded a $350,000 judgement by the Virginia court.

Hyporcrisy:

After the verdict, Santorum refused to answer phone calls asking what impact the case had on his views of “tort reform.”

According to his spokesman Robert Traynham, “Senator Santorum is of the belief that the verdict decided upon by the jury during last week’s court case of his wife is strictly a private matter. The legislative positions that Senator Santorum has taken on tort reform and health care have been consistent with the case involving Mrs. Santorum.”

—————————————————————————

The Worst Kind of Politics

Rick Santorum’s recent trip down to Pinnelas Park, Florida had very little to do with the support of the grieving Schnindler family.  In fact, it had everything to do with playing politics and consolidating a personal base ahead of a national fight over judges.

Fact:

Rick Santorum has denied that his visit to Florida has anything to do with politics.

Asked what he would say to critics who accuse him of using the Schiavo case for political gain, Santorum groaned audibly and said he didn’t “know how anyone can believe that this is a political winner, if you look at any of the polls.”

Fact:

Rick Santorum is not shy in discussing the fact that the Terri Schiavo case was about the appointment of extremist judges.

Santorum said the Schiavo case would fuel efforts by Republicans to approve conservative judges for federal appeals courts.

“I am not too sure that people realize how serious the conflict is between the two branches of government, and how greatly concerned many members of Congress are now with this kind of judicial tyranny,” he said.

Fact:

Rick Santorum has no idea what the hell he is talking about, and even Sean Hannity called him out on his idiocy.

SANTORUM: My entire political career I have been told that I have political consequences of doing the things that I strongly believe in.  I strongly believe that this woman has not had a fair judicial process. I strongly believe that rights are being violated here.  I strongly believe that having a police officer in a room to not let the family give her ice chips on her water, not let her get a drink of water…

HANNITY: She can’t swallow.

SANTORUM: to me is dangerous.

Hypocrisy:

Rick Santorum might have cancelled the Social Security town-hall meeting, but apparently fundraisers were too important for him to cancel.

Rick Santorum is the worst kind of opportunistic politician in Washington, D.C.  In fact, he is everything that embodies the disaffected — Party ahead of Pennsylvanians.

During his trip to Florida this week, Rick Santorum cancelled a town meeting on Social Security out of respect for the Schiavo family but apparently went ahead with a number of fundraisers.

——————————————————————————————-

The Height of Hypocrisy: Santorum v. Doug Walgren

Fact

In 1990 Rick Santorum defeated Doug Walgren for U.S. House, in no small part, because he attacked Walgren as unable to represent Pennsylvanians when he didn’t even live in the Commonwealth.

Hypocrisy

In his initial House race against Rep. Doug Walgren in 1990, challenger Santorum attacked the incumbent from Mt. Lebanon for buying a house and raising his children in McLean, Va. Now Rick Santorum of Leesburg, Va., is saying that he is and he isn’t a resident of Pennsylvania.

——————————————————————————————–

So, that is just a start.  There is so much more deserving of discussion.  However, I can promise you that over the coming weeks, months, and hopefully 2 years, I will be constantly providing information to the grassroots/netroots about Rick Santorum for you to share with your friends, family, on your websites, or wherever else.

Thanks for listening.
