Bush to Visit New Orleans?

Apparently Bush plans on visiting New Orleans and other storm-ravaged areas today or tomorrow.
My, oh my, I’m waiting with aching anticipation to see Bush approach a group of refugees for a “photo-op”…his half-sincere grin, promising to help.  The man will be torn to shreds!

I don’t own a TV right now, and I’m working today, so please, I beg of you, if this visit takes place and is shown on TV today, someone please start a live thread diary…I have to know what happens!

Will he actually have the guts to show his face in New Orleans?  Anyone willing to make wagers?

Japanese Subway Attacks Revisted: Food for Thought

The talk now regarding terrorists using the mass transit systems has been focused on bombs, which is only natural since this has been the modus operandi for both Madrid and London.

But let us not forget what happened on March 20, 1995 in the Tokyo subway system.
A religious group called Aum Shinrikyo coordinated a five-prong attack where members entered differing subway lines at the same time, armed with plastic pouches of sarin, in liquid form, and sharp-pointed umbrellas.  The plan was for each member, upon exiting the train at a set time, to puncture the plastic pouches, releasing the sarin gas.

Sarin was developed by the Nazis and is one of the most deadly nerve agents known.

“Only” 12 people were killed, but as many as six thousand were injured, many severely, and the subway line was put into a panic and shut down.

Casualties probably should have been much higher.  Not all of the five were successful in puncturing all of the packets.  Some subway workers, to their detriment, were also quick to clean up what they thought was either spilled water or a harmless liquid.

If such an attack were to take place in London or New York, they would be very difficult to prevent, especially by random bag checks (the liquid could be contained in water bottles, for example.)  The question is do the anti-British, anti-American terrorist have access to these types of agents?

Aum Shinkrikyo was “blessed” with some very highly educated members, including many scientists.  They also had access to large funds.  They were able to build their own chemical lab and create the sarin.  This is not an easy task; not so much because of the difficulty of creating the sarin but because of the volatility and extreme toxicity of the substance- it’s much more likely that the persons making it and handling it will die before they are able to deliver it to a target.

Sources:     Haruki Murakami’s book “Underground” detailing the attack and the Wikipedia entry, which is very detailed.

Animal Rights Activist Fired From Job Due To Pressure From Large Grocery Firm

A Rochester, NY woman was fired from her accounting firm in apparent retribution for her work in a group called “Compassionate Consumers” which “outed” the areas largest grocery chain, Wegmans, by infiltrating their egg production “factory” and documenting abuses of animals and violations of law. Story link in Rochester Democrat & Chronicle: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050715/NEWS01/507150383/1002/NEWS
Please show support to whistleblower consumer groups who are trying to keep not only the animals safe and well-treated, but also looking out for consumer safety.  Animals that live in unsafe and unsanitary conditions breed diseases that can affect the quality of their by-products.

Please contact Compassionate Consumers to show your support for Jodi, the person fired, and their efforts.

Great Women in History: Hildegard von Bingen

In the past year I’ve kind of become obsessed with classical music; listening to it and reading about its history- the lives of the composers and performers.

Classical music goes back hundreds of years, and many of us are familiar with the religious connection through the recent popularity of Gregorian chant.

Recently, I “discovered” (like Columbus discovered America) Hildegard von Bingen, a.k.a. Hildegard of Bingen (I’m no genius but I take it that “von” is German for “of”.)

This is a woman who lived from approx. 1098-1179 and was a pioneer in many fields; a pioneer not just as a woman but as a human.  She became the Abbess of a major convent in Germany, was a mystic, wrote on natural history and the use of plants for medicine, and wrote liturgical chant and the music to accompany it.  In fact, she is the first composer whose biography is known. (source: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/med/hildegarde.html)

I find her music to be very beautiful and comforting.  Here are some links to some of her works at Amazon.com: Hildegard von Bingen CD list.  This list is not complete, but contains many of the better recordings of her music.

Please check out her full story given in the source link above, and by all means check out her music.  It may not be for you, but you may also find it very relaxing and the perfect balm for a hectic, stress-filled day at work.

DeLay, Frist Apologize Over Schiavo Autopsy Results

DeLay, Frist Apologize in light of Terri Schiavo Autopsy Report

Based on the findings of the Florida Medical Examiner, that Terri Schiavo was blind, was in a persistent vegetative state, and had no hopes of recovery, Tom DeLay and Bill Frist both offered apologies yesterday.  “Okay, so I’m just a bug exterminator, what the hell do I know about medicine and all that mumbo jumbo,” said a humbled DeLay.  “I heard it through good authority, from right-wing, conservative, biblical literalists that she could be saved, so what was I to know better?” DeLay continued.  “Hey, Frist is the one that’s a physician, for Christ’s sake, and he gave a diagnosis, so go talk to him,” DeLay finished, as he huffed off for a meeting with some potential campaign donors from North Korea.

Bill Frist himself admitted mistakes.  “I admit that my diagnosis was faulty,” said Frist.  But I also believe that the video that I used to make the diagnosis was from an old Betamax tape, and we all know what kind of tape quality those have,” Frist explained.  “Based upon what I saw, I thought she had the possibility to be attending Republican fund raisers in only a matter of weeks, with the proper therapy.”  Frist also made a plea for liberals to please stop sending him videos of their body parts asking for diagnoses.  “Hey, I no longer practice, except in special cases like this Schiavo one, so stop asking for my opinion.”  “I think I’ve seen more Democratic asses in the past few weeks than I care to see the rest of my life,” Frist continued, in apparent reference to the number of tapes asking for hemorrhoid assessments.
