Or Paris, or Vientienne?
77 degrees F overnight on St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Should be great beach day on Monday at 84 F.
Congrats on the site. Looks great!
BooMan, nice site.
Well, here in Switzerland it looks like a nice and sunny day is coming up – with at present about 10°C.
Nice-looking site. Just wondering though: would it be possible to timestamp world entries with GMT?
Just a thought…
You can set your time in the Display Preferences.
As for the server stamp, I doubt it will be in GMT.
If you have a technical idea, try posting in the Site Suggestion Box diary.
Thanks.
Most unix/linux servers will be set to Universal Time (GMT is so British Empire) by default. If not, we’ll just have to add 8 hours to the timestamp (PST is -8) each time.
You’re right about GMT of course. Universal time is better.
The display prefs solve my problem just fine. They actually have a wide range of time zones to choose from!
Has anyone been over that huge new bridge in France?
Not yet, but I posted about it on my site here
There’s a similar bridge, though not as high or grand, over the James River on the 295 bypass around Richmond, Va. For those on this side of the water.
It’s an amazing experience to drive across it. We are so used to being swaddled in miles of bridge cable that the absence of those visuals makes the bridge feel open, almost floating. And there’s enough road there that even with my mild acrophobia, I wasn’t bothered.
I’ve been over that one many times
or is dKos down?
I’ve been trying to connect for 2 hours in vain.
well at least I’m up.
hey boo…i posted a diary and need to correct a few things..how do I edit it after it is up? thanks
scroll all the way to the bottom of your diary. There should be an ‘edit diary’ link next to the ‘post a comment’ link.
If there is not, let me know.
not there…just 2 boxes that say nested(which is another story altogether, for another time) and below diary on the right it says “post a comment”
that’s a problem. I will fix it. It might take a while.
no prob…my spelling sucks and wanted to just fix a few things. Thanks for this place. It’s Awesome and love the regional stuff. Can you see that I don’t have what I need?
because I have admin authorities and its a hassle…you know what? I will just create an account for the sole purpose of seeing what you guys see.
Thanks for cranking up my brain.
why do some diaries have red squares with ! inside them and others don’t?
that means no one has commented on them yet.
Nope…The red doesn’t mean that..also..who are the main page posters besides MSO and YOU, or is that it? I am so happy you got MSO to Front Page here, I am a Huge Fan of hers, her writing and entire Vibeorama.
they are MSO (who, unfortunately is not feeling well), SusanHU, or SusanHbu as she is known here (play on Boo), and Pastor Dan will probably be chiming in sometime soon.
better than that. Congrats my friend.
Nope, people been poppin in and out of the C+J Cafe shaking, weeping and generally carrying on.
dKos still seems to be down. Something major must have happened.
Kos said he was having DNS issues. Looks like it’s fine now.
if you’re not getting through at http://www.dailykos.com
go to http://69.9.161.200
and skip the dns snafu
I didn’t do nothin’ I swear!
have any advice on how to google bomb this site so that it shows up ahead of all the dkos referecnces to it?
display issues at dKos since he came back up?
What does the “Rate All” button do? How do I operate it?
I have some guesses but will refrain from typing them.
And, yay, imagine my surprise and delight when I became user #100! Sure, a number is just a number, but… it’s a round number. (ok, 2 round numbers preceded by a skinny number, but still)
(356 on dKos, 3881 on MyDD)
You can go down a thread a rate all the comments you want. When you’re done, you can hit any one of the Rate All buttons and it will record your ratings.
100, not bad.
Oh, I see. Unlike that other unnamed highly populated Scoop site, the ratings don’t update automatically upon selecting a number. Here, one selects a number for one or multiple comments and then clicks “Rate All” to register the ratings. That’s a good method, and, I imagine, less of a burden on the servers.
If we think of the same site, it works there as well.
Touché, MyDD has it, too. Serves me right not to have checked there before posting (as I thought of doing).
DKos, however, does not have the “Rate All” feature (that I can find, anyway).
Works at Kos as well (I went there to verify).
Maybe something in your settings?
since your talking about stuff…what is nested and the stuff near it at the bottom? It’s over at kos too. Is it something that will make my blogworld easier?
Do you live there?
I didn’t see the definitions here, but this is the description from Kos:
Never really used anything but the Nested-option and believe that’s the best way to enjoy Scoop’s functions though it may take a bit longer to load.
thanks for the help….i have a small condo over there.
Ah! Yes, “Dynamic Threaded” is the option I use there, and it doesn’t have the “Rate All” button at all. So I selected the “Nested” option, and there was the button.
Ok then. I type corrected.
I haven’t lived in Berlin since 2002. Anyhoo – nice to see all the world travelers. I am dying for info from Yurp.
I think I’m going to have to do a piece on the strange life of Bo Gritz. Ornicus has a piece on him today, and it just reminded me that Rambo and Forrest Gump are really just two sides of Bo Gritz. The third side is pure nutjob.
Please do. Gritz is a truly American character and I mean that in both good and bad ways.
that launching this website probably means the end of my career in online backgammon.
Damn.
No, it needn’t. Put up a board on here. I am fed up with playing it on my Palm.
My assimilation into this site will be complete if an online bridge table is added.
And an online permanent euchre tourney for me. 😉
Prince Rainier is in ICU and I’m sad. India is building its own aircraft carrier and I’m impressed. And, it’s World Water Day.
Booman said to use this (World) as open thread so I am posting here to ask if he could make bookmarks for diaries. I am having the hardest time locating a diary I liked several days ago for example and it sure would help in following comments for a diary that I did not make comments on.
Also maybe put a suggestion box up.
What a great idea. Have any others?
KeithO is listed as a frog stalker. Does that means he comes here? I may become faint.
I just listed people who are committed to cuffing the frog. KO (not to be confused with Kid Oakland) does a better job than any other MSM whore, so he gets a nod from me.
Speaking of frogs, when I was doing my daily ‘clicking’ on the hungersite and a few others, one of the ads was for ordering checks. Supposed to be recycled paper, soy ink, etc but what I thought funny was the fact that the checks they were showcasing was their ‘frog collection’, checks with 4 different frog pictures.
yes I know this isn’t earthshattering news but as I’ve spent all my time with booman and frogs lately it just seemed amusing karma.
I just want to report that BooMan Tribune has contributed to a remarkable set of discoveries for me.
Due to soj posting here, I went to Flogging The Simian.
Noting that the highest referring source to FTS other than a search engine was “Rigorous Intuition” – I went there.
There, I discovered a reference to “Archons” at snant.com. This further led to some writings by John Lash, at Metahistory. Then, on to the Marion Foundation.
This probably can not mean much to you unless you go check out the sites, and the prospect of Gnostic teachings, Gaia theory, and practical tools for fearlessness and belief changing get you curious.
High Strangeness, indeed!
Anyone else living in SE Asia?
I feel like a mole who has just tunnelled through from Kos to another field… just poking my nose up to see who’s all here.
Very nice.
Like the spell checker too. Someone might want to add “Kos” to the dictionary, though.
“Meeting only with handpicked audiences in rehearsed ‘town hall’ meetings, Bush not only encounters little substantive challenge to his views but also avoids getting any realistic sense of how little traction his plan has gotten. In this way, the propaganda president risks becoming the real victim of his administration’s own fake news.”

Cartoonist faces Greek jail for blasphemy
Haderer did not even know that his book, The Life of Jesus, had been published in Greece until he received a summons to appear in court in Athens in January charged with blasphemy.
He was given a six-month suspended sentence in absentia, but if he loses his appeal next month his sentence could be increased to two years.
Haderer’s book is the first to be banned in Greece for more than 20 years, and he is the first artist to fall prey of the European arrest warrant system since it was introduced in June 2002.
Ok, I don’t know a thing about modern Greece, but what is their deal? Not long ago, Greece also banned video games.
September 03, 2002, 12:55 GMT
A new law passed in Greece means that anybody carrying an electronic game – even if it is just on a mobile phone – could face a hefty fine or lengthy jail sentence
Thousands of British tourists in Greece are unknowingly facing heavy fines or long terms in prison for owning mobile phones or portable video games. The Greek government has banned all electronic games across Greece, including those in home computers, Game Boy-style portable consoles, and on mobile phones.
I’m baffled, but then again, we’ve got our own legislative wackos here in the States, as evidenced by the whole Schiavo fiasco.
What an interesting story… frightening, too.
Do you think beating George Bush into plowshare will help change anything? englighten me about this since am an African based in Uganda and I don’t what is hurting the Americans.
Howdy do, Mr. Hutz, I’m quite new here and was wondering, what do you think the banning-folks would feel about this lill’ Yahoo Group I created?

You probably already know the answer to your question
Yikes. Scary sounding place. What a shame… I’d always wanted to visit Athens, etc.
Where is the freedom now? has it really gone?
Thanks for this news – with all going on – actually with the few things going on that have been clogging the news, I would have missed it.
Sorry I don’t have a link for this, but entering “Haderer” in Google News Deutschland brought a bunch of articles saying that he had won the appeal, and that his book is once again available for purchase in Greece.
So what happened? Without knowing too many details, it seeems as if some conservative judge made the initial ruling, and that saner heads prevailed in the appellate court.
Who knows? It just might be that some good may come out of this, just as the bad wording in the anti-gambling laws almost banned videogames was caught in time…
What a great find, thanx. LMAO. I imagine this is how Geo.W.Jesus envisions his presentation to the masses.
Poll question suggestions could be submitted via this section and then Booman could pick one and throw it up on FP.
here:
The site has kind of snapped to life today and seems to be finally working as I envisioned it would.
Thanks to everyone.
🙂
I had that feeling yesterday. Glad to see the suggestion box diary.
I feel like I have outrage fatigue and just want to withdraw from the world. Anyone else feeling like this?
Yes I have it too and sometimes I have to take time off from the woes of the world. Usually I do that with playing PC video games or gardening. What do others do to knock down the stress?
Reading a good book can make me forget about everything else – stress, worries, whatever’s bothering me. I can get engrossed in a story to the point that it takes me away from everything. Never underestimate the power of a good story. 😉
smoke a bowl then go for a walk outside somewhere. While some might say that just a walk would do, I have to say that when I want the neurons to slow down for a few minutes to stop from exploding, that’s a great way to do it. Also inspires creativity in me (doesn’t make me creative, just gives my brain a rest from all of the other shit so I can sit down and do something “fun”). In fact the diary that I wrote the other night – two bowls deep at that time. And pretty damn relaxed.
I turn off my computer for a few days and try to do physical things. In spring and summer gardening helps. The most therapeutic is pulling weeds.
Going for hikes is good with lots of places that require extra exertion.
Anything outdoors: kayak, bike, hike, rollerblade, yard stuff. Which is makes this long winter a bit of a bummer. But, we have 60 degree weather to look forward to mid-next week!
Diane- I drink lot’s of good wine with my friends (also good for chronic back and joint pain). At 37, (I used to have a little embarassment thing about this) I love playing Grand Theft Auto III on PS2- best stress reducer I know of. It used to be Command&Conquer and Doom and all kinds of stuff like that. If you have a depressive/overactive mind like mine, you need to fully, and I mean fully, distract yourself in order to shut off the 300 ring circus upstairs.
Yes, most definitely. It’s been a rough few years, and will likely be a rough next few years, but sometimes you just need to power down and let things go for a time.
I’ve been going for more walks, looking at wildflowers, writing philosophical/navel gazing claptrap instead news and politics, and just generally taking a step back for a bit.
It’s okay… all the stuff to get outraged about will still be there tomorrow 🙂
and can’t wait until tomorrow night. There are the cutest guys on the West VA basketball team. That game starts right after the Husky men play.
yes, sooo cute 😉
What’s going on 8 comments that I rated a 4 are now hidden and I guess I don’t have trusted user yet. What does it take to be a trusted user?
I think that it takes pretty much what it takes at Kos – your mojo builds up to a certain point and TU status kicks in. I made TU overnight. When I last checked in yesterday, no TU – this morning, I logged in, and saw ‘Review Hidden Comments’ in my user box. I’m guessing enough good ratings got me there, but I’m not sure how many it takes.
Hi MM, I sent you an email, so check your mail, OK. thanks
Okay – I’ll check it this evening from home. I can’t access web mail from work, dang it!
Check my blog, I will post my letter there just for today, so you can read. Blog address is at bottom.[ of the comment. OK you can also respond there if you want.
Just moi’s lill’ glob of blog.
You’ll find some entries amusing, others EXTREMELY iconoclast, a few just goofily jocular.

13 out of the 50 most recently submitted diaries are recognizeable as Terri Shiavo diaries from their title.
And 4 out of 10 front page articles are dedicated to her.
I don’t understand what has happened over there.
It’s unreadable.
well said. i dont know either. but thanks for not being afraid to say it. respect, allegiance, and honesty are complete seperate entities.
Neither do I understand DK lately. Check the hidden comments also, troll rating big time there.
I personally am strictly just visiting there at the moment, afraid to post.
Very glad we have this nice, calm, gentle home here Booman and this site seems to be taking off in a good way.
Excuse my language, but just – what the F*CK?

Jesus H. Christ, where to start? First, Pakistan, despite having been browbeaten into a reluctant alliance with the US in the ‘War on Terror,’ is an exceedingly fragile state whose military dictatorship is in danger of being toppled by Islamic extremists. You know, the al-Qaeda and types like that. Oh, and Pakistan has nukes, which the F-16s can deliver.
Second, the Bush administration is throwing a hissy fit about the very idea of the EU lifting its weapons embargo on China, despite the fact that Israel, which gets top-notch US military high-tech virtually for free, runs no such embargo and has indeed been selling arms to the PRC with impunity. And now Bush sells cutting-edge fighter aircraft to a close long-standing ally of China? No hypocrisy there, and a truly brilliant move.
After all, their J-10 fighter benefitted greatly from a lease of an F-16 Blk 20 from Pakistan about 15 years ago. I bet the Chinese are toasting already. On the other hand, India may not be quite as pleased.
Just when you thought these morons couldn’t get any dumber or crazier, they find that extra gear.
It is bound to deliver Bush a few votes in the Fort Worth area, and he doesn’t care what foreigners think anyway.
Also, once you’ve made millions selling F-16’s to Pakistan, India will need to upgrade its defences. So then you can make millions more selling AWACs to India, to counter the threat of the F-16’s you just sold to Pakistan. Ker-ching!
I think we’ve already been down this road in the Middle East – we sold F-15’s to Israel, so then Saudi Arabia wanted AWACs, so then Israel wanted F-16’s, so then the Gulf States wanted our air defence missiles. All very lucrative till someone goes and starts a war.
I have noticed that the diaries that get the most responses on this site are the non political one. Is it because we all need some breaks from the never ending stories that drive us mad.
For me it is.
What about you?
And what is everyone doing for Easter????
Happy Easter by the way, to all.
For me personally I try and read all the political diaries although may not post to all. Sometimes it is just hard to know what to post or I don’t feel qualified to comment knowledgably enough.
Posting comments to the diary on books or other nonpolitical diaries is a welcome mini-vacation from all the rather unrelentingly bad news. My senses get dulled if I don’t take a break and talk about books or your diary on ‘when did you realize you were a liberal’. Kinda like all work and no play makes jill a dull girl. Have to have some balance.
Happy Easter to all celebrating Easter and Happy Weekend to all those who are not.
Added your your thought, I read so many, it must be hundreds of pages every day as I’m sure everyone else does. At the end of the day my vision is just fuzzy and my brain cannot absorb anymore.
I have a hard time expendng the effort to read a long lengthy diary at times and wish there could be more just linking to the source for articles, so one could have a choice of whether to read it or not.
And then like you I just don’t have anything to comment as nothing was asked of me and what can I add of substance.
Information overload can lead to a burn out, eh.
I would like to see more discussion on this thread in general subjects, but not many seem to be using this page.
I am just wondering if you and others like the regional settings as they don’t seem to be used much at all. I was thinking about possibly removing them and instead putting in their place; Suggestion and help box, maybe one box for honor roll where we can recommend someone for special recognition, and a “tell me about yourself” so that we could go there and find out more about posters.
Iknow the diary MM did on that was very popular, but now its a hassle to go and find that diary.
I like seeing posters fleshed out, that makes it all the more interesting.
I brought this up, because I seem to be the only one lately posting on any of this regional settings. Just think it could be put to better use.
What do you all think.
…to wish everyone a Good Morning – or Afternoon, for our East Coasters – and a happy week!
And happy day to you MM. Now you and I are the only ones using this thread, why is that?
Well I guess we could have our own conversation?
How is the weather out in lovely CA today, Diane? 😉
Well it started out today with a little rain, because we haven’t had enough yet, but now the sun is shining and the sky is clear. The temp is 57 and rising. It is actually cool for us, but the way this weather goes it will be 80 tomorrow.
How about the weather there, Texas right, and what part, I can’t remember.
If anyone but us ever reads the world thread, maybe they would like to add weather in their location.
How do you like the site changes. Great, right?
Not too far outside Houston. After a chilly, windy day yesterday, we’ve got beautiful, warm sun shining on us today – just in time to go back to work! We’re going to be in the 70s every day this week and spring is definitely in bloom, finally – along with the allergies us Texans have to go along with all the new green.
Did you receive my e-mail late last week? For some reason, I couldn’t respond to you at your blog, so I just waited until I got home and replied to your e-mail. It was so nice to hear from you!
Yes I got your email and thank you, I was going to respond right away but cought up in the whole “smackdown” thing and wrote so many words so fast for such a long time, especially since it started after I had been having a hard time with an issue on my diary so that started Fri. night. Anyway my arm and neck, head, eyes and brain hurt so much, my computer crashed on Sat. night, had to do a emergency boot Sun. morning and had a hard time with that, first time I ever had to do it and was scared to death the whole time something really bad had happened. I think it just couldn’t take anymore with all the refreshing and searching and writing I was doing. I’ve promised my computer to be gentler with her from now on.
Anyway I will write back to your email soon.
Do you want to put our responses under new posts so this thread doesn’t get so wide, which I hate when I am scrolling. I just keep checking the world thread anyway. Nice to chat with you.
I’m glad to hear that you got your PC back up and running okay yesterday. Those crashes are a pain, aren’t they? <sigh>
I had a busy weekend myself, with family and friends dropping by – and on Friday, we spent our day off at the beach. It was a terrific day for it, although the water was freezing! We just enjoyed the sun.
Our margins are going to mess up soon, aren’t they? Yes, we should probably start under a new post!
You should get right over there and tell us your story about blogging, OK.
There’s a very important Supreme Court ruling coming up that may affect the Endangered Species Act. I’ve been hunting for info on the “cave bugs” that are protected by the ESA and which are causing major problems for some Texas developers. But, I fear I don’t know enough about the science, and the importance of the “cave bugs,” to do the story justice.
If you want to do the diary, please go for it. This excellent article from today’s LA Times will give you a great start.

The National Press Club Welcomes… Jeff Gannon?
By Joe Strupp
Published: March 28, 2005 updated 3:50 PM ET
NEW YORK Jeff Gannon is back. At the National Press Club?
Yes, the same day that the prestigious Washington, D.C., journalism organization plans to present a lunch talk by former Washington Post executive editor Ben Bradlee, it will also allow the former White House reporter/sex site operator to be on a panel discussing bloggers and online journalism.
Gannon, whose real name is James Guckert, resigned his job with the conservative Talon News last month after it was revealed he had used a pseudonym, had little journalism background, and had ties to male escort Web sites.
Still, Press Club leaders will include Gannon on the panel April 8 that includes Wonkette.com editor Ana Marie Cox, National Journal’s John Stanton, and others.
Gannon told E&P today that he always considered himself a legitimate journalist, and “perhaps their invitation is recognition of that.”
I’d tell the whole conference to “Fuck off” and refuse to attend. What a joke.
Well that does it. I think we can officially say the by inviting GG as a supposed peer the Press Club has lost their integrity irrevocably. Could this be any more freaken stupid? Any real journalists left should refuse to attend.
I can’t find the suggestion box, so am posting here.
Anyway, it would be interesting if you were to have a day of the week (maybe Wednesday, I don’t believe that’s any religion’s holy day) for a discussion of a religion (separate from Pastor Dan’s Sunday sermons and words of the week). I’m pretty sure there are people of other religions on here, and it would be a perfect venue for people to get an idea of what those religions are about. You have an excellent start on international diversity, maybe this will also encourage religious and other diversity.
For instance, Islam is of course one that comes to mind. I’m sure I’m not the only one that sometimes holds conversation with people, where they say “Islam says this or that!” and I say “No, it doesn’t!” while not having a clue what it does say, just operating under the basic assumption that anti-muslim right wingers are lying. Maybe someone of that religion can layout the basic principles and hold a Q & A, from time to time.
Also Buddhists, Quakers (teacherken and Welshman had an interesting discussion about that on one of the diaries), earth worshippers, and so on. One a week, maybe, where the rules of participation are clear, and the person is willing and able to answer questions and so on.
I think something like that might be an interesting addition to the site, and would help build understanding, not only among Democrats in the US, but also how things differ around the world.
that broadens understanding among the community. Even invite a right-wing Lt. to the site.
I have deliberately welcomed people of faith to the site. And I did so in the hope that they would broaden the conversation.
So, I think your ideas fit right in with that.
Great, thanks. Maybe some of the others will give their thoughts on the idea as well, if it’s something that is of interest to others on the site.
Hi Nanette – I would be happy to participate in a religion discussion. I enjoy talking about different faiths, as well as my own, with folks – especially since this is one of those things you just don’t normally talk about. Kind of like politics. We have one – let’s have the other! 😉
Sounds good to me :). I’ll probably write up a diary putting it out there for opinions, as the subject is not likely to get much notice on this thread.
Of course people writing diaries on the various topics are always informative (Ductapefatwa has a great one up now, on Islam and Feminism) but I think possibly making it an actual event might be a bigger draw, both of people within and from without the site. And mentioning politics, those too, although I notice Fran has a diary up about that.
Might as well take advantage of all the knowledge and opinion here to learn about stuff that doesn’t come our way normally. And informed populace is a something or other, and all that ;).
An earthquake of 8.2 magnitude struck off the coast of Sumatra yesterday. Apparently there is a lot of strucutral damage and deaths are being estimated at up to 2000. This is the last thing the region and particularly Indonesia needed.
when I thought, erroneously, that a tsunami was coming your way. Did you feel the quake?
Thanks for the e-mail.
I slept right through it, and then heard about it all on CNN and BBC this morning, by which time the tsunami warnings had been removed! By the way apparently it was felt by some in Bangkok which is a long way from the epicenter. I live in a very small town about 80 km east of Bangkok and felt nothing.
It seems the authorities were quite quick with their warnings.
Unfortuantely it looks like in Indonesia around 2000 people have died in buildings that collapsed. This is truly tragic for Indonesia. I understand there was what can ony be described as understandable abject panic in coastal towns near the Andaman Sea.
Let’s hope there are no more big ones.
A quick update. The earthquake has now been reaassessed as being of 8.7 magnitude on the richter scale making it one of the biggest 10 earthquakes in the world since 1900.
Twice in 3 months.
One eerie thing is the tsunami struck at Christmas and now this at Easter. I hope the lunatics dont start reading too much into this.
Thank you for the update. Glad to hear you are safe and sound, Observer.
Just got up, turned on computer, went online, Booman Tribune first stop, and wow, a lot of new diaries this morning, that’s what I like.
And a special good morning to you MM. I see you are at work.
Now my only problem is getting off this page long enought to grab some breakfast, bring it back to the computer and eat it here. Don’t want to miss a thing.
Yes, I’m at work, with half open eyes…but I’m here. 😉
Good morning everyone!
Please see my comment under Chamonix in International Crowd, about you updating your “Tell me about you” diary, for new comers and ones who didn’t see in the first place. What do you think?
I read it, and saw your reply about e-mailing Booman to ask if it’s alright. I’ll do that this evening if he or Susan don’t see the comments first. I think rotating the diary is a great idea, for folks who miss it or need a refresher. Thank you, Diane!
Oh I forgot you can’t email from office, I will email him now for you, OK.
Terrific – thank you, ma’am!
So where is the diary??? Weee’re waiting. Are you at lunch?
I had a HUGE project to do, believe it or not. I had WORK! LOL!
Now, someone tell me what to do to get that diary back on the Recent list. 😉
I see someone did it for me. Thank you so much!
To update a diary to the recent list you just have to click set to current time on the diary page and write update on title.
Glad to see you getting some work done. ha ha
Anyway I miss you when you’re gone.
Gotcha. Thank you!
Aww, it’s nice to be missed. I miss you guys when I’m not here, too. 😉
Iknow we ask a lot of you, but could you make the numbers on the to list red. I can harly see them and the red helps as on the other lists. Love the hotlist though.
Thanks for all of your attention to this site.
I have been trying to post a comment and it fails saying that its too long. I tried earlier and it didn’t post, when I tried again it said you have already posted. Is there some glitch.
if the subject title is too long.
50 characters is not enough. Some of us were never intended to be brief. Not that brief, anyway.
Brain Tumour.
another Perspective has responded to a comment I posted this morning under Gannon/Gukert and he poses a lot of questions that I think would make a good front page debate with a Neocon, or a least a diary. Could you do, this is our chance to really have a conversation with a Rep. I am just too tired right now,to try to answer all of his questions and I sure many of us will have responses regarding these various issues.
I am just so curious about your screen name, are you from Hawaii or do you just have the aloha spirit?
Both.
I seem to recall mention of an extension for Firefox that supports diary writing. Can someone point me in the right direction, or did I just dream this?
TIA!
here
It’s my first time visiting this site, and I have to say I’m already a fan simply because of the Big Lebowski reference on the “About” page.
That made me laugh.
Just saw your sign in post and I want to welcome you to this site. I hope you will enjoy it. Please see this diary and add your story to” Tell me about you”:
http://www.boomantribune.com/?op=displaystory;sid=2005/3/24/13448/6342
If you have not already done so.
for pointing me to that diary – I just posted a little about myself over there.
Hi Kate, and welcome! I just read your post in the ‘Tell Me About You’ diary. Congratulations on your new place! Your job sounds fascinating – some of the current reality TV shows are my guilty pleasure. 😉
I am very excited about my new place! My personal TV guilty pleasure are home decorating shows, and I can’t wait to put all the ideas to use.
As for reality tv, it is a very interesting thing to work on. The show I worked on had a buch of people living together in a house, and as a camera operator, my job was basically just to document their lives; there was a crew there 24 hours a day/7 days a week. And in the show I worked on, we were hidden behind two-way mirrors so the people in the house didn’t know we were there, which was weird. I got to meet the cast after the show was done, and I felt like I knew them all since I spent my days practically living with them, yet they had no idea who I was.
from Armando: “DeLay is just an unbelievable dick.”
So true.
Amen, brother.

The Pontiff has been administered the Last Rites, due to worsening condition of his health. JP is not in the hospital, but is at home in the Vatican, where medical facilities are present.
Italian television stations said the 84-year-old pope had been given the last rites.
As news of the pope’s deteriorating condition spread, hundreds of followers gathered near the Vatican, some praying, some crying. Authorities had sealed off St. Peter’s square but the faithful filled the surrounding streets.

Hey everybody, I just saw a picture of Maryscott on the site for DK meetup for Socal, I can’t post a link, because I think it will be in my account page, but check the site.
Anyway, she is young and beautiful.
Her profile at dKos has always linked to a site with pics of her.
US says Zimbabwe election process not free or fair: World: Pot calls kettle Black
So, I’m just saying ……….I was flipping channels and hit C-span and got the pants scared off me by this freaky looking guy..Ken Mehlman…didn’t recognize him at first but he looks more bug-eyed and scarier than ever.
Is it just me or am I imagining that a lot of those republican dudes are pretty creepy to look at? Not saying that all the democrats are Johnny Depps but jeezzzzz.
http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/sexed/index.html These few questions and given answers show some of what is being taught in the abstinence only classes promoted by bushco. One answer actually says a girl should never ever act smarter than a guy. I thought that thinking went out ages ago or at least wasn’t so blatantly stated. Good Lord that’s just really fucked up.
I saw that yesterday too! My son was laughing at me for saying that there weren’t any right-no, make that correct-answers to choose from! Then he looked at them, and realized I wasn’t kidding.
Yes some of those supposed ‘correct’ answers are just downright scary. I thought during the Clinton years great strides were made with getting out the message on condom use, now that seems like ancient history.
(Don’t look at me, I am wiki phobic, by the way)
Anyway though, with all the various diaries on this or that important topic, like the election diaries from various countries, the Zimbabwe elections stuff, and susan’s investigative/pulling strings together ones and all the science and religious and other things, I think it would be nice to have a library of all these subjects, for reference and for just whatever. (Possibly even an editing section that tells how one ends sentences that go on and on).
Anyway, I believe it could be a valuable resource for this and other things.
Second the motion.
Hey guys! Just taking a short break from the hell known as work to stop in and say good afternoon, and I hope you’re all having a nice week!
I missed you and was wondering where you were. Please be sure to see my last diary about my Iraq friend as she has just started her own blog, and I have a link to it on diary and some more background info in the comment section.
So glad to see you name back on the boards again. Is your work getting busier?
I just saw that diary of yours a few minutes ago and read it. I definitely want to visit your friend’s blog and will head that way here shortly. Thanks for the heads up on that, and for bringing a new blogging voice out. I’m going to enjoy reading her perspective.
Yes, work’s getting busier! I’ve been having to helm a bunch of meetings in the last week or so – one of my vendors has completely crapped out and needs to be replaced, so I’m interviewing prospective vendors and getting bids in. Hopefully things will slow down and next week will be much calmer. My days are not the same without my Booman fix! I missed you too! Somehow I knew when I saw a new post up here in the Open Thread that it would be from you, saying hello, and I was glad to see I was right! 😉
{{{hugs}}}
Hugs to you too, my booman mentor.
This site is not the same without your comments peppering the pages. I read evey comment you make, when I see one from you. Always interesting. Please less work, more blogging.
I never seem to get anything done anymore, especially mundane things like dishes and vacuuming and God forbid I should have to answer the work phone.
By the way check ‘my’ comments section for one I made on Monday Bloody Monday diary,
http://www.boomantribune.com/comments/2005/4/3/22712/08733/36#36
yesterday, because it contains a despription of what my day is like.
I can always count on you to say something sweet, my friend, to help my day along.
I just went and read that comment of yours, and realized yet again what a small world we live in. My dad owns and operates a tree service! Two of my cousins work with him, as well as a small crew, and his day begins very much like yours – full of excitement and the same noises.
I always read your comments, too, and I never miss a diary, since you’ve started writing them. I look for Diane Diaries every day. 🙂
This should have been a reply to Diane’s latest comment.
Dang nesting.
What a coincidence, about your dad’s business, and that’s in Texas right? How is the business there, booming here?
I have been involved in this business (one way or the other)since 1973 when my ex and I first started it, he was only 25 at the time (and we didn’t know squat about running a business) and it’s still here after all these years, so I guess we did some things right.
So what do you think of the writing dervish you opened up in me? I have always written, all of my life, but was very wary of these sites, a la DK,(other than commenting) so becuase of you I was able to venture out to actually write a diary and now 7 or is it 8.
I also like Chocolate very much as well as many others here, and love to see their words here. When my favs are missing I am sad, (sigh.)
And about the small world thing, I did my genealogy chart last year, , and I discovered that one decendant who came here in about 1750 now has over 1 million decendants all over the US. And that’s just one and that’s just here in this country, probably an equal number are decended from the same family that still live in EU. And that’s just my family, when you consider the same thing in other families it makes you think very different about our unique relationship with the whole world. We are intertied in so many ways, and I think that is what this admin. and others fail to realize in foreign policy.
brought to you by Free Press They’re voting on a Media Hall of Shame. Vegas, anyone?

A friend of mine has asked me this question, “Can you still get social security retirement benefits if you owe the IRS back taxes, or would the money be forfeited to the IRS.” I don’t know the answer and wondered if anyone on this site does.
If you’ve been to the site before you’ll know the quality. If not, well go take a look at riverbend’s latest post, on American media in Iraq. It’s a good one.
Yes this article is excellent and this is one small part of her excellent rant about US and now USIraq style news and tv in general. My own addition to her list of TV shows they get in Iraq and ME is ‘Friends’, which they are now able to see.
Her suggestion and I think a surperb one:
“”I have a suggestion of my own for a reality show. Take 15 Bush supporters and throw them in a house in the suburbs of, say, Falloojeh for at least 14 days. We could watch them cope with the water problems, the lack of electricity, the check points, the raids, the Iraqi National Guard, the bombings, and- oh yeah- the ‘insurgents’. We could watch their house bombed to the ground and their few belongings crushed under the weight of cement and brick or simply burned or riddled with bullets. We could see them try to rebuild their life with their bare hands (and the equivalent of $150)””…
yes, diane when I had read that I thought that was a perfect suggestion. I’m sure bush couldn’t handle that much reality though as it would certainly interfere with his ‘freedom is on the march’ crap.
Everyone should be required to read Riverbend’s posts and check her daily to see what or if she’s posted. Starting with the media. Maybe some of what she is writing would get them to start acting like real reporters and give the public some real news.
Just noticed another Diane on this site and I wanted to say hi! I am diane101 and I want to welcome you to this site.
If you like tell us about yourself…
Hi diane101, you spotted me on my first visit here. I came over from DKos where I’m a regular reader but intermittent commenter (due to the fact that it usually takes me so long to think through a comment that the thread is dead by the time I’m ready to post).
I’m a regular at Eschaton and Jesus’ General, though I’m not going to admit to what names I post under there. And, being a bit more of a lefty than most, I REALLY miss the commenting at Whiskey Bar.
Other than that, my Typepad bio is here.
I come from the same part of the world as Welshman, and share his gift of verbosity. So thanks for the excuse to talk!
hi and welcome. You mentioned you’re a bit more lefty than most. I was just thinking last night about definitions and how they actually mean different things to different people.
I know I always thought my views weren’t that radical then when I became more politically aware I found out I’d probably be categorized as extreme left on most issues. At least I think I am. Not that I think I am just that lots of people might think so.
I know what you mean. I think I feel a bit more lefty than most simply because I immigrated here from Europe about 10 years ago, and compared to Europe the U.S. doesn’t seem to have any national-level leftist politics at all: more like a center-right party and a far-right party. So although my views would be fairly mainstream over the pond, they feel pretty radical over here.
Just read your bio, do you have a blog and if so post a link here.
I have more to talk to you about, and I will think for awhile and then post something.
What name do you go by on DK? I’ve seen two other Diane’s over there. I go by the same screen name there but haven’t posted much lately. I like this site too much. Hope you will join in a lot, we need more people here.
More later. diane
Over at DKos, I post as “diane” (very original).

Ok, ahem.

This happened to me before and the page I linked contained even more of my personal info and then someone on DK told me about it. Just wanted to let you know, so you will be on the alert in future about this.
thanks diane, still getting the hang of the linking and pasting info is the problem. Will be more careful from now on.
Today is the 25th anniversary of the racist regime Rhodesia’s transformation into Zimbabwe, April 18 1980. This also means that President Robert Mugabe has ruled for a quarter century, at best as a semi-dictator.
Despite an economy that has declined by 50% in five years, 70% living in poverty, a gallopping AIDS pandemic, rampant starvation, vast numbers of internal refugees, and a state of deep international isolation calling to mind Rhodesia in the 1970s, all is jolly well – at least according to Mugabe.
Below: the newly ‘reelected’ Prez with his wife, Grace ‘Gucci’ Mugabe.

Good to see your name on the boards again.

Surprisingly early, the 115 cardinals in the Sistine Chapel have chosen a new pontiff to lead the Catholic Church.
The speed in election, surely means that there will be no surprise, as was the case with Karol Wojtyla and John Paul II.
My best guess, the new pope will be Italian, my favorite would be the Cardinal of Milan – Dionigi Tettamanzi.
Within the hour, the announcement will be made at St. Peter’s Square, who will follow JC in the footsteps of St. Peter, the rock on which the church is build.

Elected as new pope – Benedict XVI.
Just turned 78 years, the most senior and close advisor to the late John Paul II.
A clear choice of the Conclave to continue along the same doctrine set out during the last 26 years.
Although his age, would indicate the choice means likely to be a short reign, similar to the papacy of Benedict XV.

Lower house approval moves Spain a big step closer to legalizing gay marriage

So God willing, she will follow through.

Irangate – drugs and arms – McKee and Gannon – the death of an Israeli agent Mr. Nir was a member of President Bush’s Terrorist Task Force in 1985 together with Oliver North and Oliver Revell!
Mr. Hunt says that also in attendance at the meeting were two assets of the CIA, Mr. Charles McKee and Mr. Matthew Gannon, both subsequently killed on board Pan Am Flight 103, which was blown up over Scotland Lockerbie. A number of investigative journalists have claimed that Mr. Charles McKee and Mr. Matthew Gannon were the primary targets of the Pan Am 103 bombing. Mr. Hunt says that pres. Bush discovered that Mr. Nir had secretly tape recorded the meeting and was planning to expose the activities involving Bush and arms sale to Iran, which also would have exposed many high level U.S. officials. The decision was then taken to kill Mr. Nir.
At CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, mr. Hunt had met with Mr. Oliver North and asked him what had happened to Mr. Amiram Nir. Mr. North told him that Mr. Nir was killed because he threatened to go public with the recording of the Jerusalem meeting in 1986.

Follow the definite results as they come in at BBC — ELECTION 2005
Tony Blair is on course to win an historic third term for Labour but with a reduced majority, according to a joint BBC/ITV exit poll. The poll suggests Mr Blair’s majority will be reduced from 160 to 66.
The findings – based on 19,800 voters at 120 polling stations across the UK – were announced as polls closed in the 2005 general election.
The BBC’s exit poll suggests Labour’s concern during the campaign, that it might perform less well in marginal seats it is defending could be realised.
The exit poll suggests that on average, the party’s vote has fallen by just over 6 points in seats it is defending against a Conservative challenge, compared with a 5 point drop across the country as a whole.
BBC Political Editor Andrew Marr said: “If it is anything like that, it is a lot worse for the Labour Party than most people have assumed.”

ROME (AP) – May 5, 2005 — Premier Silvio Berlusconi spoke before The Chamber of Deputies today, said he disagreed with some of the US military’s conclusions into the March shooting death, of Italian agent Calipari in Baghdad. He also stated those differences won’t affect Italy’s friendship with Washington or its deployment of troops in Iraq.

May 2 – Lawyer, Carlo Taormina has spoken once more of an audio tape, in his possession, of a satellite phone call between Iraq and Italy, a copy of which was obtained via the internet, by Gianluca Priete, (who is himself under police investigation for illegally accessing electronic records). Hello everyone! I’m back on-line after suffering blog withdrawal since Friday. We’ve settled into our little apartment and are learning the local roads in our new town. Here I sit — inside the city limits — and outside my patio doors, down a ways into a forested ravine, I can see two deer grazing. Whoa! How cool is that?!
The neighbors we’ve met — two of Falwell’s Liberty College girls — tell me that if I throw out some corn the deer will come right up to the patio. They have also warned that hiking in the ravine might be perilous — they have seen a couple of brown bears who, fortunately, ran away from their barking dogs.
By an entrance ramp onto what the local’s proudly call The Expressway, we saw a beaver on the shoulder, looking non-chalant about the passing cars. So far, I’m loving this blend of town and wilderness.
Anyway, I’m glad to back with my Boo Pals and re-connected to current news.

Glad to see they’ve made it a priority to improve our image in the Muslim world. I don’t know how Gonzales sleeps at night, it was because of his torture memos that all the lines of abuse were blurred.
And really, who is going to believe that the Koran is treated as sacred, when the US government allows its representatives to undress muslim prisoners and put them on leashes, hood them and shock them, beat them senseless, handcuff them in cruel positions…need I go on?
I’m glad Rice is speaking out on this. It helps speed up the unmasking of all their bullsh*t. They can pretend all they want that this issue is Newsweeks’ fault, the truth is that the Bush policies are the real regrettable offenses here.
