Authorities determined Thursday that three volunteers involved in a civilian project to watch the border and report illegal crossers did not hold an illegal immigrant against his will.
The Mexican man had told sheriff’s deputies that he was detained and forced to pose for a picture holding a T-shirt with a mocking slogan. The shirt read: “Bryan Barton caught an illegal alien and all I got was this T-shirt.” Barton was one of the three volunteers.
“The county attorney’s office reviewed all available evidence, that indicates that there was no forcible detention, therefore the case is not substantiated, and no charges are pending,” said Carol Capas, a spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.
The sheriff’s department, Mexican Consul Miguel Escobar and the U.S. Border Patrol also agreed that the 26-year-old man was not detained, said Capas and Border Patrol spokeswoman Andrea Zortman. link

A Florida senator said Thursday that he was placing a hold on the nomination of Stephen Johnson to become administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency because of a pesticide program involving children in the state.
Nelson’s announcement came one day after Johnson clashed with senators at a hearing over questions concerning an agency program, which reportedly paid low-income families in Duval County, Fla., $970 if they agreed to observe the impacts of pesticides used in their homes on their children.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., who initiated the questioning with Johnson on the program, known as the Children’s Environmental Exposure Research Study, also has placed a hold on his nomination.
Johnson said Thursday that the program had been suspended but not cancelled, according to Boxer.
The EPA earlier decided to have an external, independent review of the program and expected to receive the results by this spring.
Boxer said she plans to lift her hold if Johnson cancels the program,,,link
Maybe they can reach a pragmatic compromise and raise the honorarium paid to the parents to the price of a burial policy.
An enterprising West Seattle 6th grader used his aunt’s computer to make phony dollar bills, which he then gave to some of his friends.
An assistant principal at James Madison Middle School called Seattle police Tuesday after another boy tried to use one of the bogus bills to buy beef jerky from the school cafeteria, said Officer Sean Whitcomb.
The boy who counterfeited the money told investigators he brought 20 fake bills to school and distributed 12 of them to his friends; police were able to collect eight of the bills, Whitcomb said.
Officials with the King County Youth Services Center — the detention center for juvenile offenders — did not take the two boys into custody, and it is unlikely either will be charged, he said.
Let me know what Sen. Byrd’s interview with Judy Woodruff is available online. It was awesome.

MSNBC is reporting that (47 year old) Jeff Gannon might be a missing Iowa boy named Johnny Gosch.
Old story, been out from the beginning, diaries on DK and other about it at the time.
I was following the Gannon controversy intently for a while, then just got burned out on it. I must have quit before this portion became known.
Whew. Now I’m glad I didn’t post a full diary on it. Thanks Diane 🙂
