I am putting this new diary up today in honor or our two new members both from China who just registered and wrote in my previous “Tell me about You” Diary.
Please Lovexjj, and lilawang do come to this thread and tell us more about you.
To oldsters on this site, please welcome our new members above and others and any oldsters who have not told us about you please do so here.
I am not going to put links here for previous diaries, you can just check my page for previous diaries to find them.
I am asking the poll question male or female because of a previous request by Chocolate to see what our breakdown might be, so all member who read this diary, please answer the poll question.
Greetings to you all on the wonderful day.
Remember pics are great too especially ones of you all.
We are up to the count of 919 today, maybe even higher by now. There are many, many of you who have not told us about you, so here is your chance, with a nice new diary to fill us in.
How can you see the membership numbers? How do people know what user number they are? I’ve looked for this info before but never know how or where to find it.
can be found either by holding the mouse cursor over the screen name(a bar will appear and the user number is the last number) or by going to the info page for the person and it is listed there.

Thanks… I never thought to look in the url line. OK, that’s one of life’s mysteries solved… er, you wouldn’t happen to know why we’re on this earth, would you? OK, never mind. Thanks! 😉
.
… we’re on this earth, would you?
No problem, whenever you have a moment. It’s almost a click of the mouse again, turn of a key or to unsaddle a horse. I just have to cross over from my rational half to the emotional or spiritual half. The answer is there within reach.
E=mc²
As long as I don’t have to explain Einstein’s theory of Relativity, I’ll do fine.
Oui – Liberté – Egalité – Fraternité
I don’t know why. but this post made me laugh! In a very generous, innocent way.
Thank you…
.
in combination with the struggle by Lovexjj, brings back from memory, my first month in the US, struggling with the English language. In the sixth grade classroom, needed to fill out questionaire with personal info. Confronted for the first time with the term gender, I thought it wise to ask for an explanation. Truly, at the time in all innocence, caught the teacher’s attention and put forth a very biological question, concisely: “What am I?” I didn’t get a reply for minutes, due to bulk of laughter. I never needed to get clarity after that single experience.
Thanks for your poll.
Oui – Liberté – Egalité – Fraternité
Oui, what a poignant story above, I feel for all people sruggling to understand and live with another language. It must have been very hard for you in 6th grade to go through this. My son would have been mortified, I am sure.
.
small town of Créve Coeur, pop. 1500 at the time, in rural St. Louis County.
There was no problem, as we had a lot of fun translating words from English into Dutch. Most kids learned to speak the Dutch language. I could fill a column with Oui-isms, but I don’t think I will. LOL
It probably taught me to do some more research before opening my mouth. One of my favorite sayings —
Oui – Liberté – Egalité – Fraternité
And what great timing – in your preteen years. Ouch!
But I couldn’t help but jump into the door you’ve opened. Diane refers to you as a “he”, and I thought you were a “she”. (Not that there’s anything wrong with either)
Since Oui doesn’t seem to be around today, I thought I would answer, Oui, is a he.
Sure about that? Really, really, sure? Absolutely, positively?
That is what he told me (in email)and he put his name on one diary and it is a male name, I won’t say the name, he must tell you himself.
Don’t worry – I have no interest in anyone’s personal identities.
Good night! And I really should mean it this time, lest I do something stupid on that looong path out the door – which. . .I do believe has been known to happen somewhere along the line :^)
.
Adrian is used in the states as both male and female name. In the Netherlands it’s 100% boy’s name in some variety: Aad, Aat, Arie, Adrie, Adriaan.
Baptism name is Adrianus – most likely named after only Dutch pope Adrianus VI or Adrian VI.
Had to perform civic duty yesterday evening, an information hearing with city of The Hague mayor Wim Deetman, before a neighborhood crowd of some 550 fellow residents. Topic of discussion and protest is the city proposal to sell 10 acres of historic and beautiful Clingendael park to the United States of America, to build new US embassy. I put in my 0.02 worth.
Will provide follow-up later today in linked diary. I was neutral before, but two days ago I read proposal to city council, after which I had to conclude I am very much opposed now! So are at least 15,000 local residents in this neighborhood.

hello everybody

i reply oui and Diane by e-mail.
waiting for the next mail from you.
i am so happy in this site.
haha~~
Thank you for your very nice comment, yes I think we can make a friendship, to be sure.
Can you tell us a little about you, where in China do you live, are you male or female, how old are you, things like that.
I would love to hear more from you.
This is a very good site with lots of very nice people, I hope you do enjoy. Welcome again…
Without in any way diminishing the value of this relationship, I find it bizarre and exstatic that Diane, Oui and the Chinese person are making contact.
I’m thinking of the first Colonists and their relationship with the aboriginal indians. (and I am making no cultural value judgements at all here)
This is how it is going to be: 1.4 Billion people want to make contact with the world. That is why we are here?
What a nice thing to say, I am excited as well, as I always am when making a new friend across the world.
Yes indeed this is how it is going to be. People all over the world do want to make contact.
I have suggested before and will say again, please folks make contacts like this one with a citizen from China, try jolly roger web site for email pals from all over the world. Or simply do a search for pen pals and you will come up with many sites to choose from.
I especially loved your reference to first colonists and Indians or add too Japan and England, Spain when first visitors arrived there.

established 15 years ago with Hong Kong and Taiwan. I am very excited about mainland China, a good friend has engineering and production dealings in Chinese province across straight from Taiwan in the city of Fuzhou. Until very recently, to cross over, there were no direct flights possible. All flights were relayed through Sjanghai, and cost a half a day extra flying time.
Chinese tourists to Holland
A new visa agreement has been reached between China and the EU. The tourist quota for Chinese tourist visa is now tenfold – yes 10x – from 100,000 to 1,000,000 visitors each year. Just expect it to increase even further, while I am at the library tomorrow, should I get you a copy of the English-Chinese dictionary?

I, for one, welcome the real Ufo’s of this age – China and the Chinese.
Almost 5000 years on different paths -and now we live in a time when the first real wide social contacts are being made.
I guess nobody really understands it yet – but our world is about to have a makeover…

So, George just growls when the topic to be confronted is China. It works with North Korea, Syria and Iran. I’m afraid China is earning a lot of US dollars for a honest wage, multiplied by 1.4 bn.

Welcome, boboan. Welcome, lovexjj. I’m interested to know how open the internet is in China. Can you go to any sites you want or are you limited? My nephew was in China for a year studying and we could email but he said most of the internet was blocked. That was in 2001, maybe things have changed since then.

For others reading this comment, here is a link for hang zhou.
I do not speak Chinese unfortunately, but I have studied China quite a bit and read many books about your country, particularily before the Revolution. Very interesting and important country in the History of the world.
You seem to be doing quite well with your English.
I love chinese food as well and Japanese food too.
I cooked only Japanese and Chinese food for two years of my life when my interest in those cultures was at a peak. I Used only authentic utensils also.
I even added a section on Chinese cooking to a gardening and survival book I wrote several years ago.
Well we shall love to hear more about your culture and your life.
I doubt that I will ever get to China as I don’t even like to leave my house now, but in my mind I have been there many times. Wish I were younger and then I would put such a trip in my plans, perhaps.
Perhaps you could tell us how America is viewed in China by the people there.
Thanks for the link to hang zhou, dear tour guide.
And what a lovely trip to take on this drizzling, overcast day!
Oh my. . .with new guests from overseas, I feel the need to watch my sarcasm – the meanibg of which is easily misunderstood even in a familiar language.

I can imagine we should explain. Sig line is like a signature under each of your posts on the blog. It’s a statement of emotion, life’s goal, philosophy or a famous quote. From the culture of Confucius, we can expect many worthwhile cultural statements, westerners still need to grasp!
The story of Confucianism does not begin with Confucius (Latinized form of K’ung-fu-tzu, Master K’ung; 551-479 BC). Nor was Confucius the founder of Confucianism in the sense that Buddha was the founder of Buddhism and Christ the founder of Christianity. Rather Confucius considered himself a transmitter who consciously tried to reanimate the old in order to attain the new. He proposed retrieving the meaning of the past by breathing vitality into seemingly outmoded rituals. Confucius’ love of antiquity was motivated by his strong desire to understand why certain rituals, such as the ancestral cult, reverence for Heaven, and mourning ceremonies, had survived for centuries.

The above is a message in chinese I think, I used the translator for this, don’t know how this works, but maybe Lovexjj can tell me. Anway this is how it came out.
To others, this is a translation using the above translator, just having fun with this today. If you want to read it copy and past on translator link above and translate to english from Dutch.
.
Seriously, you were in a huddle with Lovexjj and Lilawang, and wrote this translation, yes? English to Chinese to Dutch.
My translation in reverse from Dutch to English:
LOL LOL LOL
You see why we had so much fun back in Créve Coeur!
Welterusten!
Oui – Liberté – Egalité – Fraternité
I really got a kick out of that, seriously that’s what came out. Well I don’t know if I can trust the translator again….lol lol lol, and wish I had some emoticons here.
Thanks for the big laugh for me today,,,,
Good Lord! And she’s serving as our Ambassador of Foreign Relations? (Guess it’s too late for a filibuster :^)
Anomalous, which I hate trying to spell, everytime I have to go back and look to see how you spell it.
If you are talkin’ about me, I didn’t know I was Ambassador of…., well if so ‘I absolutely declare there will be no fillibuster’…And you can’t impeach or fire me either, so there. Too bad I wasn’t pres.
Thanks again to you and all of you for making me smile today.
Yeah. . .I was talkin’ about you. . .while at the same time laughing pretty hard about the translated version of your comments presented by Oui.
If it’s any consolation – I had to resort to using Websters to make sure I had spelled my sig accurately. Thought it would’ve been somewhat of a public humiliation using a misspelled sig name. In light of that – feel free to call me what you wish.
Anom works for me, and shouldn’t require any cross-checking for spelling. Or Steve is fine as well.
over that whole translation thing. And now another one just over your comment, you usually make me chuckle, just a little and sometimes a lot.
I kinda like the name Steve for you, does that mean you are male. Just kidding, I already know you are female because you said something about your husband once, I think.
Yes it is a consolation to me that you had to look up the spelling first, and spelling is my big bugaboo, since a lot of words do not look right anymore and maybe that is because they are not. Oh well, such is old age. Good thing I used spellcheck now as I had two words wrong.
Say do you know who won American Idol, so I don’t have to wait to find out. On west coast we won’t know till 10:00.
Hey have a good night and wake up happy tomorrow, OK.
And a top o’ the evening to you too! Haven’t been following AI much – but something tells me there’s plenty of young women (and men) out there swooning over Bo Bice. And he does have a great quality to his voice. So. . .as a diversion. . .I think I’ll go check on that just for kicks.
And again – good night to you!
Steve
This is what I said above,
“”OUi I am using this translator to write this message in Dutch, because I am having fun with this today. Tell me if this sounds right to you. I am assuming your other language is Dutch. Correct me if I am wrong. By.“”
When I put the translation back into the translator into English is came out like this:
“”OUi that I use this translator this report in Dutch to write, because I oblige with these at present have. Tell me when this just to you sound. I as well that that your other language Dutch is. Improve me when I been wrong am. Through. “”
Boy what a difference, not quite as bad as Oui said below though, lol all over again.
I sometimes use Systran (www.systranet.com) for rough translations of languages I don’t command.
In general they are fine, but I checked some Swedish-to-English the other day for fun, and the results read like a tongue-twisted immigrant on acid. Now I’m suspicious of the earlier translations.
Babelfish is good but has only the main language pairs.
You put up a fine link to east-west info and China province, very beautiful pictures as well!
If your translation is about food, I will take some out, I’m starving! This is not possible, because the clock reads just about midnight here in The Hague. Too much China to digest – I do love their food, fresh and well prepared. Also in the Netherlands, you will find Japanese, Thai and Indonesian restaurants, and of course a fine …

Hi I’m Curly and I’m a closet Booman’s peruser. Born and bred in New York, I grew up campaigning for liberals and democrats, going to peace marches, folk concerts, and concerts at the Filmore East. I’m completely dismayed by what’s happening in this country – just a few years ago I thought the world was becoming a safer, more civilized and peaceful place, but now feel as if we are hurdling back in time to the Dark Ages.
There’s so much I love about this crazy country, but now find myself wondering, “Who the hell are these other people living here?”. I’m tired from protesting the war (Vietnam) and fighting for civil & women’s rights (now I actually wear frilly bras -egads), but am very happy to see all of you supremely smart and active people on these blogs trying to keep the government and others honest. Truly, I prefer to lie on the beach, but my political junkie boyfriend, “ask”, just won’t leave me to my lethargy. So, here I am actually writing a profile! Still more a voyeur than activist, but who knows where it will lead.
So glad you finally posted your bio, I hope you will make many more comments and really join in the fun and seriousness here on Bootrib.
Don’t we all long for the Clinton years when we didn’t have to worry for our very survival.
We need you in this fight once again, so please put the lethargy aside and help us.
Thanks Diane – after reading these entertaining attempts to translate Chinese, I’m happy to maintain my spectator status! Welcome to the Asian newbies too.
By the way, how would you say mojo in Chinese?
Don’t know how to say mojo or anything else in Chinese, unfotunately.
Please do not maintain spectator status, do I have to beg you………
You can see from the number above in poll, that we seem to have fewer women posters than men, of course only 12 took the poll so there we are.

You are catching on in Chinese language. The “r” sound is silent.
Wow Diane, you’re a natural talent after all. I’ll try abusing the translator also.

Well, I just finished my crepes (yes sweet with Strawberry jam and sugar – barbaric sweet tooth of mine) – actually finished by my dog:
What an adorable dog, what kind is it?? Crepes you say, that sounds good, I am going to have a TV dinner.
I hope you do cook more often than not. Personally I HATE cooking – but I am such a picky eater, completely driven by momentary impulses (that means I can’t plan in advance what to make – it’s a spur of the moment thing – drives my daughter nuts), that if I don’t get what I crave I won’t eat – so I have to cook. Not worth expending the energy chewing, I guess.
I just got a digital camera – so I had to play around with it a bit. That’s a pic of Ducky – he’s an English Jack Russell. He’s really sweet natured, playful and has just recently discovered that his favorite food group is slippers. I’m sad that they cropped his tail – I think that would have made him so much cuter.
Oh no, Diane, not a tv dinner full of preservatives and additives. Thou shalt eat only whole organic foods cooked by yourself. 😉
Welcome, too, to our new Chinese members. Perhaps, one or both of them can post a diary teaching us basic Chinese conversation like how to phonetically say “Hello, how are you?” and “My name is__.” Also, do the Chinese have a word for “internet” or do they use our term?
Yes I do confess I eat many TV dinners, but marie Calendar, usually. Yes I know they are bad, but I am too lazy a lot of the time to buy proper food and prepare it. Takes too much time away from the computer and Booman, etc.
But really I should cook more and thanks to your comment I will make a bigger effort to do that.
I am hoping to have a big crop of tomatoes this year, if I can just keep the darn bugs away. So I will hopefully be eating lots of salads this summer.
Surround those tomato plants with lots of marigolds and don’t smoke anywhere near them. ‘Course you probably know that already. Did you plant them in manure?
Hello everyone. I’m Kamakhya and I’m a Liberal.
I used to be quite active in the 80’s, but then marriage and a baby and all that entails got in the way. After Nov. 2, I decided I had to get active again to try and do my part to salvage what is left of the U.S.
I grew up in upstate NY, but now live in Oakland, California with my 11 year old daughter. I spent a year in Paris and have a brother who lives in Berlin (I’ll send him the link for this site). I really like the interational aspect of Booman Tribune.
Kamakhya Hi and welcome aboard. We are glad to have you in this fight to save the US. The present situation has brought a lot of us out of the “closet” and into the battlefield for this war on our country being waged from the Whitehouse. I too had those baby and children years, which in my case lasted from 18(first child) to 58 when my last (of 5) children graduated from HS.
Also welcome to a fellow Californian, the greatest state to live in outside of hawaii, and that is MHO.
I do hope your brother joins this site, we love our internationals.
Are you male or female if you don’t mind saying, it’s hard to tell with your screen name.
Interesting screen name by the way.
Thanks for the warm welcome, Diane. I am of the female persuasion and have been since birth.
I adore California and have long stated that if I ever move again, it will be out of the country, though Hawaii is tempting.
I had a feeling you were female but I got in trouble a few weeks ago, for saying that to what later turned out to be a man, so I am more careful now.
Hawaii is tempting and if I had the means and the money I would be there now and forever, but since I don’t and I can’t, I am happy with second best here in Socal.
and especially to our newest Asian members, welcome. I see by reading some of your comments you’re worried about your English…not to worry. I’d say you should be more proud of yourself for learning another language while I sit here only knowing one.(even with my several years of spanish-knowing only a few words)
For a short, very very short portrait of myself I would say most people who know me would first say about me that I am almost violently anti-prejudice. I’m older(and I’ve been with the Booman from the start), last time I looked I was female. I’ve become interested in art especially in the last several years.(Diego Rivera is great and Van Gogh’s ‘Cafe Terrace at Night’ is one of the most romantic pictures I’ve seen) My politics are very far left. I question whether there is any god and on other days think there must be?
My sister is my best friend and after some 30 years I can say honestly that her and I have never had a fight or cross word between us-ever.(some people find that impossible to believe but it’s true) Considering I’m one of those heathen liberal democrats, I think family is paramount to everyone’s personal existence…even if it is an extended family not related by dna.
I’m a movie and trivia freak and want my ashes scattered over a library when I die. I also censor myself usually on Diane’s diarys knowing she’s not overly fond of profane language and I tend to have a mouth at times like a fucken drunken sailor.
Thanks so much for your comment and the last line:
“”I also censor myself usually on Diane’s diarys knowing she’s not overly fond of profane language and I tend to have a mouth at times like a fucken drunken sailor.””
That line gave me a good laugh with my glass of breakfast “coke” this morning. since I can’t drink coffee, it makes me very nervous, even decafe.
Good idea for ashes and made me think where I would want mine scattered and I will say with humor, I want mine scattered over a pool table, but then someone will come along with their little pool table brush and sweep me away into the dust bin. So I will rethink that.
Diane, I really must remonstrate with you about all this TV dinner stuff – expecially after you made us all feel guilty about not having a cornucopia of a vegetable garden;-)
And now it’s coke for breakfast! Shikes! Have you no shame! 8-))))
I hope Ghostdancer won’t mind if I invoke his wonderful Great Spirit to reach you to desist your city ways, and go natural.
It’s a good thing I have all this counter balance to watching Senate Debate, thanks for making me spit out my coke from laughing at your comment.
I guess I will have to slink in shame to the grocery store and purchase some organic and nutritional food in order to keep up my practice of preaching organic food and gardening. I promise to atone for these sins before I ever dare to post another diary on that subject.
Ok SJCT too, I will really do it…
Can’t give up the breakfast coke tho. that goes tooooooo far (to the right). See I don’t drink coffee so that is good, right.
Great Spirit did reach me and I guess I will have to thank you for invoking that spirit. Really!!!!! I am totally serious.
You are forgiven.
We’ll get round to the chain-smoking later, after you’ve flushed your body of toxins and jogged round to the store. And that doesn’t mean the 711.
8-)))
Now I have to flush my body of toxins too? Then jog to the store. I don’t think I can handle that one, can barely walk to the store, back problems, and no I do not do enough exercise either, since I am wed to this keyboard 16/7.
Chain smoking, how did you know that!!!!! Did I confess earlier to that sin, oops maybe I did. Well gee, I now have a quite a list of things to work on.
We’ll see, I think I will just work on the cooking first and then see how it goes……………
Great Spirit will enjoy having you invoke him to help diane curb her ways and enjoy the benefits of natural foods. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful community.
and you all, Ghostdancer and Sven and Sjct and others for caring and for also being a part of this wonderful and spirited community of friends.
May the Great Spirit be with you all and all of the world.
Ghostdancer – could you sometimes write a diary about your beliefs – or recommend a book or source for understanding them better?
I spent some time in Oklahoma a long time ago, and got to know some very interesting people connected with the Cherokee nation. But I never really followed up when I returned to Scandinavia.
But N.American Indian culture still keeps intruding into my research. Especially traditional formal debating systems used to solve tribal problems etc.
very best wishes to you from the boreal forest, where nature is till held in great respect.
I too would be highly interested in a cultural diary, Ghostdancer. I can’t recall the specific roots of your heritage, but I have several friends of Ojibwe ancestry, and I’ve been fascinated with their culture over the years. Given my appearance, I was nicknamed Pocohantas in my childhood – and it was a moniker I not only carried with pride, it inspired me to read about native cultures (back in the day when I had to rely on an Encyclopedia for most of my research). And given the community I grew up in, my parents were none-too-pleased when they discovered I had been leading people to believe that I was of Native American descent.
If you have the knowledge, and the inspiration to share, I’d also be very interested to learn about the difference in cultures between various tribal nations.
Nimise in spirit.
I would also like to welcome all the newbies and international newbies. Thank you for coming to Booman’s and enhancing our lives with your interaction and analysis of world and US events. I have the utmost respect for anyone who is not an english speaker and is willing to learn english. I was born in the US and was once contemplating an English Major and I still stuggle with our confounded language. I am glad all are here and thank you again for contributing to the raucous nature and the hilarity, along with the drama and seriousness of our diaries. If it were not for Booman’s, I am afraid my wife would have moved me out to the shed, because I have such energy around the destruction of my country and its democracy.
I don’t know how one gets put in the recommended diaries but I would like thank whomever it was that place me there. It is an honor to selected to that position here. Thank you all for being who you are and placing so much of yourselves in facilitating change in our nation.
Thanks for your comment above and I wanted to tell you how diaries get on recommend list. When someone clicks the recommend this diary(on the upper right corner of page) list, it starts up the ladder, the more recs. it gets, the higher it goes, and then some reach the list and can go higher if it gets enough recs.
After being on the list for a time it starts down again and then off. I think Booman does have some ability to put diaries on the list, but generally it is just enough recs. You can click on the who has recommended this diary to find out who has for your but you cannot rec. your own diary.
Yuo may know all or some of this, but then others might not, so I put all of it on here.
So it really is some consensus of opinion that allows diaries to get on the list.
Hi to everyone.
I’m a teacher in HK who moved from Greece years ago where I lived before. Been posting on other blogs before. The English one you may know is New European Times. My family is part English, French, Greek and now Chinese too. I can use all these languages, some better than others.
I will try and give a local’s perspective from both HK and China where I travel a lot..try to give some different perspectives on stuff. It’s not a democracy out here. You may have noticed…but it is a party..sometimes.Oh net censorship is a fact of life, but I know many Chinese actively working for change, putting their freedom on the line. Sometime I hope to get them on here or at least post some of their views for you all!! See you around I hope.

Enlightenment seen through the Asian Cultures, reported from within cultural and economic life of its beating heart of Hong Kong. A booming economy and major developments for the 21st century — although GWB believes he is in focus of the World Community too!
Looking forward to any and all of your contributions.

Just noticed your comment and I have to get on the job and welcome you to this site. We are so happy to have you here and look forward to your contributions. You certainly seem to have an interesting background and can give us a lot of insight.
I hope your Chinese friends can come on this site as well.
Here are a few historical links that can add to your perspective of Native American cultures. What I might add is that North American Aboriginal peoples were called Indians by the Europeans based on Columbus’ mistaken belief that he had found India. The Natives called themselves, the chosen people or human beings, it is the same in meaning even if it is a different word in all native population’s language.

Because of Boomans diary last night on his surprise, which I think is in someway going to be internationally based I have just now invited my email friend from Uganda to join this site. I am so hoping that he will and then can give us inside info or cultural info from Africa. He is a native of Africa who speaks excellent English (self taught) and I have been so impressed with him for his forebearance in studying and learning on his own. He is very poor but works in internet cafe that allows him to communicate with the world.

DNA and the Enzyme Topoisomerase IB
A Dutch led international team of researches from the Department of Molecular Biophysics, Kavli Institute of NanoScience, Delft University of Technology, the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris and the Sloan-Kettering institute in New York has unraveled how nature releases the torque built up in DNA at the molecular level. DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid – the genetic material inside the cells of virtually every living organism, which control how each cell develops and behaves.
PS There is also a large Dutch community in Holland, Michigan. Perhaps including a good website with News from The Netherlands.
WOW. I knew the Dutch were smart – I need another translation – before I can understand this news item.
