I do believe that divine forces speak to humans through the natural world, and that each one of has a guiding spirit that is represented symbolically by another living creature – a totem. Maybe a family or community will have its own totem as a group. I don’t know anything, so I search for information, try to pay attention, and make up my own version of the meaning of life. Symbols speak to us all, but we can’t always agree on their meaning.
Ted Andrews says this in his book ANIMAL SPEAK:
“The frog is a totem of metamorphosis. It is a symbol of coming into one’s own creative power.”
Another excellent reference for animal medicine is MEDICINE CARDS by Jamie Sams & David Carson:
“Frog sings the songs that bring the rain and make the road dirt more bearable. Frog medicine is akin to water energy….teaches us to honor our tears, for they cleanse the soul.”
“The transformation into adulthood prepares Frog for its power to call in the waters of the skies: the rain. In knowing the element of water, Frog can sing the song that calls the rain to Earth. When the ponds are dry, Frog calls upon the Thunder Beings to cleanse and replenish the Earth with water. Like Frog, we are asked to know when it is time to refresh, purify and refill the coffers of the soul.”
“An ability of Frog medicine people is to give support and energy where it is needed. A Frog medicine person can clean negativity from any environment…..Frog speaks of new life and harmony through its rain song.”
Pretty much applies to Booman Tribune, eh?
Alice what a great post! Metamorphosis indeed! Native peoples have such insights into the “bigger” picture of things. All of the info quoted applies so much to BMT and our recent expansion and all it entails.
Thanks for this.

I was just contemplating the frog thing this morning. I pay a lot of attention when different totems come up in my reflective world. When we moved into our current domicile, one of the first things I noticed was that we hear frogs every night. We’re right off of a ravine with a little brook — more like a drainage ditch, really — and the trees and wildlife are amazing. The medicine of frog I am familiar with is “cleansing by water” but I like the Ted Andrews definition you’ve shared here much more, and it’s a definite fit for me. I was staring at the little frog graphic this AM, and thinking how curious it is that this reflection has come up, again, since my leap from DK, and wondering just what the relevance was.
Cool! As a French-Canadian, often called a frog by my childhood acquaintances, I guess I get the last laugh, eh? š
I’m a frog or franco also on mother’s side- 100% Irish on my dad’s…
Why don’t you move to the US… on second thought why don’t I move to Canada??
So glad you did this.
I’ve been struck by how many newbies have said they are coming out into the open for the very first time, making comments for the first time, even writing their first diaries. I know I’m commenting MUCH more than I ever have anywhere else, and I’ve already written two diaries, even if the one I did this morning really only served to give other people openings to say perceptive things.
If BooMan ever decides to change the symbol we’ll know something has shifted here!
In the last storm, the Great Spirit will show the Human Beings to their true path ; )
As a defense mechanism, the frog secretes the chemical to kill or subdue creatures that attempt to devour it. However, some humans apply the material to their bodies for its purported health benefits. @ slope unblocked
