MSNBC just reported it could generate local tsunamis but not regionally wide tsunamis, it’s said. (Please share what you learn below.)

7.0 MAG QUAKE OFF CALIFORNIA COAST…
TSUNAMI WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE COASTAL AREAS
FROM THE CALIFORNIA-MEXICO BORDER TO THE NORTH TIP OF
VANCOUVER…
MAP…
WIRE…
GOV RPT: PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE 7.4
LOCATION… 41.3 NORTH 125.7 WEST… OR 90 MILES NW OF EUREKA, CA
AND 300 MILES NW OF SAN FRANCISCO CA AT 751 PM PDT.
Susan are you near the coast where you live. 7.0 earth quake is quite large and I am thinking a tsunami may happen, what size was the one in Indonesia.
I am not near coast but my daughter is about 1 mile from coast.
From all the news stories after the SE Asia tsunami, we are very vulnerable … we’re on the Strait of Juan De Fuca just off the Pacific Ocean.
early reports at that time said that Seattle would be safe but the latest stories I’ve seen have refuted that and said Seattle could be at major risk.
I’m guessing Vancouver Island would also be very vulnerable — where Sybil is — but less so the city of Vancouver which is on the mainland and protected by the big island.
Tell people what you saw on your TV.
This quake is much smaller than the Boxing Day – Indonesian Quake which was:
The #s are only part of the equation of what makes a quake destructive. I’ve been in different quakes …
one in Los Angeles, the Richter scale was only about 4.5, but it jumped up and down — the thrust was vertical — and it was terrifying, and things fell off my shelves
the most recent was in 2002 here in Port Angeles, and that was much higher — 5.x or 6 — and it rolled more horizontally
BBC link here. Please note that the Richter scale is logarithmic and not a linear progression in expressing the energy released. A nice explanation is presented in the wikipedia link. –M
I shouldn’t have said that Fred Phelps is going to hell.
Anyway, my daughter recommends going to the Yahoo message board because people are making nasty remarks about all the liberals being washed into the ocean, etc.
The Yahoo news story is here.
there is nothing on any news local or national…WTF is wrong with these people..any updates would be appreciated…
thanks Diane..I have a really good friend that lives on the Beach..right on the beach in Venice…I just called him..I am on KCAL now.
Yes, I’m thinking about everyone who live at sea level now.
I never knew you were so close, Cham….what city are you in.
Sherman Oaks, Calif. South of Ventura Blvd in the foothills above the valley. I have a big mountain blocking any waves that it may trigger. Buy I have many friend that live on the other side of that Mountian..ie..Santa Monica…Venice…
The area most likely to be hard hit is the California coast north of San Fransisco up to and possibly including southern Oregon.
Cresent City, CA, just south of the Oregon State line already starts at 3rd (5th?) Street, as the coast front streets were wiped away by an eariler tsunami. I suspect they may bear the brunt of this one.
“This strong earthquake off northern California would not have been felt, nor have caused damage in Canada. The Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre is currently determining whether a tsunami was generated.”
EVALUATION
IT IS NOT KNOWN – REPEAT NOT KNOWN – IF A TSUNAMI EXISTS BUT A
TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED. THEREFORE PERSONS IN LOW
LYING COASTAL AREAS SHOULD BE ALERT TO INSTRUCTIONS FROM THEIR
LOCAL EMERGENCY OFFICIALS. PERSONS ON THE BEACH SHOULD MOVE TO
HIGHER GROUND IF IN A WARNED AREA. TSUNAMIS MAY BE A SERIES OF
WAVES WHICH COULD BE DANGEROUS FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE
INITIAL WAVE ARRIVAL.
ESTIMATED TIMES OF INITIAL WAVE ARRIVAL
LANGARA-BC – 2244 PDT JUN 14[That is Northern of Vancouver Island, Haida Guaii]
Nothing on the Canadian tv news channels.
My daughter said — don’t laugh — that the astrologer for Vanity Fair has predicted this since Sunday.
http://www.michaellutin.com/dailyfix.htm
(I know, I know .. but at the least it’s fun, and it’s wild that this is the photo he has up!)
I do not laugh at that Susan, and Chamonix, I didn’t know you were in La. where….
It’s quite striking that he has that photo and the caption.
Chaminox, let us know what you hear.
UWash earthquake expert now speaking on NW cable news.
It’s a strike-slip quake not a thrust. Tsunami was detected on an offshore buoy, very low, about an inch, so not much threat even when multiplied near shore.
My landlord called me because I’m renting just feet from the water in Puget Sound.
Hey Canadians–we were watching “Dr. Who” on CBC out of Vancouver and they didn’t break in. What does Who know?
is covering it.
CNN has Larry King talking about MJ.
sad, really.
at least had a “flash news” banner during the Countdown repeat; they may have had info on their web site.
IMNSHO, MSNBC kicks CNN’s ass… 😉
I’m surprised to see that CNN isn’t all over this like white on rice – even waking up Miles O’Brien since this kind of stuff is his beat and rounding up their many on call experts. Then again, it is after midnite ET and it’s not like west coasters are that important – unless they’re having some celebrity justice trial. 😉
Warning cancelled, but doesn’t make me feel any easier as we had an earthquake here on sunday, maybe something is building up.
My husband is at a telescope in the mountains and felt a big jolt. He then heard some rumblings and told one of his colleagues that he thinks more was to come. Sure enough, it came. Everybody was O.K. but he later heard that a family was killed (including children).
The USGS will have best info.
BEEN DETECTED.
EVALUATION
NO TSUNAMI DANGER EXISTS FOR ALASKA – BRITISH COLUMBIA –
WASHINGTON – OREGON OR CALIFORNIA. HOWEVER SOME AREAS MAY
EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS
CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL
CLEAR DETERMINATIONS MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.
Here’s the usgs page for the major quake off the coast of california.
14 June 7:51 pm PDT: A M=7.4 earthquake occured off northern California. A small tsunami was recorded in the vicinity of the epicentre, but the tsunami warning for the west coast of north America has been cancelled.

NW Cable News mentioned that no sirens went off. I’m living in central Puget Sound right on the water, and with numerous evacuation signs & routes, I’m fairly sure there are sirens nearby.
We were watching CBC Vancouver (Dr. Who) and they didn’t even put a crawl on the screen as I recall. I suspect we’ll hear some discussion about this in the region over the coming days.
Honestly this was a very useful exercise for me. I lived 50 years in Ohio thunderstorms and tornado warnings, but the signs for those come hours to a day or more in advance. Anyone weather-wise knows when to pay attention. Obviously tsunamis have no visible buildup. The warning time could be an hour or few for Aleutian or a humungous Asian event, to minutes for an in-Sound quake.
We’re not going to be able to remain near the water much longer–the real estate market in combination with our declining economic trajectory is effectively ‘voting us off the island’ — but while we’re here, we’re updating our emergency-gotta-run backpack.
Which now includes backup DVD for the computers!
Wow. Glad to hear everyone is safe and sound!
Santa Rosa aftershock 3.0 magnitude at approx. 7:57 pm pst
Did you feel anything where you are, Pam?
I remember the great diaries you did after the Indonesian tsunami, especially those examining the warning systems in your area. They were very informative, as all of your diaries are.
Thank you!
I sent the URL for one to my aunt in Florida today, it so happens:
The personal stories almost nobody knows, but should
It was a glorious Easter vacation, despite the chill from the Pacific Ocean winds. The three boys — ages 8, 7, and 6 — had built sand castles, collected shells, and thrown sticks into the surf for their dog to fetch. The boys, their little sister, and parents had driven from their home in Tacoma, Wash. to Beverly Beach, just north of the coastal town of Newport, Oregon.
On Good Friday, the family of six made a snug home inside a small driftwood shelter on Beverly Beach. The boys nestled close to each other in their sleeping bags. The three-year-old girl cuddled with her mother, who lay next to the children’s father. The dog had winnowed his way between the boys, who’d wrapped their arms around him.
The family hadn’t felt closer in a long time. The deep darkness and the constancy of the lapping ocean waves lulled the four children and parents to sleep.
Around 11:30 PM, the mother and father awoke when a small wave penetrated their shelter and soaked their sleeping bags. Quickly, the parents got the children up, and began walking towards the cliff and pathway up to their car. The mother, a strong swimmer and Red Cross Senior Life Saver, held the hands of two of the shivering children. The father held on to the other two.
Suddenly, a second, devastating wave hit….

Re several items in posts above, San Diego Trib reports
— this is the third quake on the Pacific coast in the last week (so the astrologist may have been relying on meteorologists to look so smart — and yes, so something may be building up)
— there were sirens heard by some quoted in the story
— and (I did not know this!) the site of the only tsunami in the continental U.S. was exactly where this alert was . . . in Crescent City in 1964, with a loss of 29 lives
I hope all is well for you Californians. I have family there and know how scary these can be. . . .
At least it’s not on my Forecastfox bar any more. What? You don’t have Forecastfox? Go install Firefox, then get the Forecastfox extension. (Go to Tools, then Extensions, then Get More Extensions in the box that comes up.) You’ll be glad you did.
I’m just guessing here, but I suspect this is a bit of overcautiousness in the wake, so to speak, of the December tsunami. And that’s fine, I’d rather they were being cautious when there was a slim possibility of a tsunami, than ignoring the whole thing when there was some likelihood of one.
We’re a ways inland in Seattle and protected by Phinney Ridge, so I doubt we would be in any danger from a taunami. It would have to come up the Piper’s Creek watershed and . . . um, around the foot of Phinney Ridge six blocks from our house and . . .
accccck! Get the sanbags!!
The Tsunami warning was cancelled but the USGS just issued a coupnami alert!
And you can’t prove a thing.
Though according to the reports to the CA earthquake center, this quake was felt the entire coastal length of California, as far south as San Diego, no damage reported so far (as of 11:30pm pacific time, 3 and a half hours after)and no tsuanmis reported anywhere.
Here in Arcata, I felt the quake as a ripple and some rock and roll for long enough that I figured it was a significant event somewhere. Since Indonesia, we’ve become reacquainted with the substantial study of quakes and tsunamis, since our subduction zone–the Cascadia triple junction–is very similar to the Indonesian zone, except that ours is closer to shore and we would have very little warning of tsunami in a really big quake like that one. So we know the lay of the land, and which places are truly in danger and which aren’t.
9. quake like Indonesia is many times larger than 7.0 but 7 is still major. Crescent City, just south of Oregon, evacuated their downtown—it’s the only place in the U.S.mainland where people were killed by tsunami in recorded history. It wasn’t necessary, but they probably all feel pretty good that their procedures worked, and people were out of the zone pretty quickly.
more about the historic tsunami at Crescent City
I woke up this morning here in Germany with an email from my mom in Crescent City, CA:
“We are fine, in case you read about Tsunmami on net. We evacuated to Don’s mom about 8:10, sirens and the whole works. just left, didn’t even take my purse, just Don and Tootie and I. It was definately a quake. the quake was 7.0 about 80 miles SW of us, it did not generate tidal wave.
Love, mom”
Wow, talk about waking up! [BTW, Tootie is my mom’s little yap-yap dog]
Talk about a scare!
For those of you who are interested, you can sign up for new earthquake information and receive the data at the same time as the scientists around the world by going here:
http://neic.usgs.gov/
This is the USGS center in Golden Colorado, the one that receives seismic data from around the world and processes it. Here is some of what they sent out for the California quake.

or at least the order was given. Tourists were wandering around not knowing what to do. Many people thought the sirens were just testing. Most people made their way to higher ground. The coast guard were alert and received many calls.
Tofino is on the west coast of Vancouver Island, facing the ocean. The warning was only on for one hour.
I live north/east of Santa Rosa…. normally the Geysers from the thermal plant give us daily shakers. Last night we felt a “biggie” but thought “it’s just the Geysers”
This is the quake site we use when ever in need of info.

“Shaken not stirred” as my son would say. 😀
I meant to post that they upwardly revised that number recently. I saw numbers as high as 9.3 Their original estimates didn’t take into account some low-frequency energy that the usual instruments don’t take into account.
Man alive, I’m having trouble with blog interfaces today. That was meant to be attached to an earlier post about the Indonesian earthquake.
