I just watched the Yankees score 13 runs in the 8th inning to take a 20-11 lead over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Jeter got his fifth hit. Sheffield hit his second 3-run homer of the night, followed by a homer by A-Rod, followed by a homer by Matsui. Bernie tripled in three, and tied Yogi Berra for sixth-place on the all-time Yankee hit list. Posada homered.
And all this after Tampa routed Randy Johnson and took an early 10-2 lead.
That’s incredible.
P.S. The basketball game is tight…. 50-51.
And Pinella never even got anyone up in the bullpen. He just glared at his pitcher.
Lou is too funny.
We enjoyed Lou. You may not have heard of Art Thiel, but I’ve always enjoyed his sports column in the Seattle PI. He wrote about Lou the other day. An out-of-context snippet:
That, friends, is how leverage is spelled in pro sports.
No electron microscope is required for reading between the lines of the moves by Brown and Piniella. They want out of their current jobs. But neither wants to say they’re quitting, retiring or going Randall P. McMurphy on their employers.
Even though they have years remaining on their deals, they want to leave, and as victims. That way the onus is on the teams to justify the departures. ….
Randy gets for leaving Arizona.

and Seattle…
We have a world to save…
er, anyone know the basketball score?
I think the Pistons won handily at the end. So there’ll be a game 7. And I caught the last couple minutes of Katie Couric’s interview of the runaway bride.
P.S. Charlie Rose’s interview of NYT’s John Burns is a must-see. They talked about Iraq as if it’s all lost.
Go Sox!
Everyone should note that the Sox had good hitting tonight too, AND they had good pitching!
Currently atop the anemic NL West, they beat the damn stinkin’ Doggers a second time tonight, relying on their characteristic combination of excellent pitching, great bullpen, deep bench and tonight, some sparkling defense.
Whoo-hoo!
