Note: I originally posted this on DailyKos six months ago but have modified it for the Frog Pond
This is my Old Tyme FAQ and Jamboree, or my guide to all readers, Commenters and posters on Booman Tribune, the website where you are right now đ
Itâs not official, itâs not endorsed and everything you are about to read comes from me. Â Some or all of it you may know about, other things may be new. Â Feel free to disagree or add anything you like!
First of all, welcome to Booman Tribune! Â Itâs the friendliest, liveliest, banjo playinest political website on the planet and its strength and appeal comes from you, the reader, Commenter and Diary writer. Â Itâs hosted by our godfather, Boo, and we are all his guests here. Â Welcome aboard!
Whatâs a FAQ? â Some people will tell you this is a stupid question, but itâs not. Â As your teacher mightâve told you once, there are no stupid questions. Â FAQ means âFrequently Asked Questionsâ. Â There is a small official FAQ which you can and should read here. Â It explains a lot of important things. Â If you havenât read the official FAQ yet, please make it your first stop!
âMain Pageâ â This website comes in two sections. Â The first is what is commonly called the âfront pageâ, which is the page that loads when you go to http://www.BoomanTribune.com in your web browser. Â The people who write Stories that appear there are known as âfront page postersâ and are handpicked by Boo himself. Â You can get there anytime from another Booman Tribune page by clicking on âHomeâ in the upper righthand corner of your screen.
You can see an opening paragraph or two there and then click âThereâs moreâ to read the rest of the Story. Â You can add your own Comment but only after you register. Â If you want to make Booman Tribune a truly interactive experience, you have to register. Â Itâll give you the power to add Comments of your own and write your own Diaries.
Please donât worry that your email or other information will be sold. Â Itâs all kept completely private by Boo.
Open Thread â On the front page you will see a âStoryâ sometimes called the âOpen Threadâ. Â This is the perfect forum for you to write a Comment about anything under the sun â especially if itâs just a simple link to an article on another website. Â
Whatâs a Comment? â A Comment is a short message that you yourself add to an existing article, whether âMain Pageâ or âDiaryâ. Â Once youâre a registered user, just click on words âAdd a Commentâ at the bottom of either the Story or all the other Comments. Â
FOR SOME USERS ON SOME COMPUTERS: If youâre reading a Story and you add a Comment, the page will refresh and youâll lose your place. Â There are two easy choices of what to do â one is wait until youâre done reading the Story and then adding your Comment then. Â The other is to use the right button on your mouse and click on âAdd A Commentâ so that it opens in a new window. Â Then you can add your Comment and not lose your place in the first window!
Diaries â The other half of the website are the Diaries. Â These are Stories, articles if you will, written by people just like yourself â the âordinaryâ registered visitors to this site. Â There are rules about Diaries that you can find in the official FAQ. Â The word âDiaryâ makes it sound like you should be talking about what you had for breakfast or something, but itâs just a Booman Tribune-ism meaning an article/post written by a (registered) user of the website.
Whatâs a Story? â A âStoryâ, for the purpose of this FAQ, means either an article written on the Front Page, the Open Comment âthreadâ or else a Diary. Â They all function the same in terms of how to add Comments and Rate Comments.
Whatâs a Poll? â A poll can be added to the end of any Story where votes are tabulated based on a selection of choices decided upon by the User who wrote the Story
What Can I Write About? â Hmmm⊠now thatâs a good question.  First of course, please observe the rules  which you can find in the official FAQ.  If you follow the rules, pretty much everything you want to write about is ok!
Now you have to understand that Booman Tribune is a âcommunityâ. Â Many people have been here a long time and are quite attached to this place. Â There are certain âethicsâ or âmoralsâ about what is or is not ok to write Diaries and Comments about. Â
Here are some of the more or less âacceptableâ things people write about:
- Breaking News â although most people online have access to CNN and other âinstant newsâ websites, sometimes people write about ongoing issues which they think the community at large would be interested in
- Analysis of Political Issues â anything from specific bills to what politicians are doing to policies to Congressional hearings â this is a politically-oriented website!
- Personal Stories of Political Involvement â this could be anything from what you did or saw on election day to a Story about what Congressperson you called or a petition you signed
- Analysis of News â sometimes the commerctial media doesnât do a good job of covering news items and more in-depth analysis is warranted
- General Interest â this can be almost anything really â one user (PastorDan) often covers religious issues which a lot of people find quite interesting and worthwhile to read. Â Others (Omar) like to share stories from different cultures.
- Diaries About Diaries â Whether writing a Diary Commenting about another Diary, a Diary about how Diaries should (or shouldnât) be written or a Diary about Diaries about Diaries â these are part and parcel of what the Booman Tribune community (not much now but probably will be in the future)
- Diaries About The Community â definitely deserves its own category â this is where the users come together to discuss issues facing the entire community â whatâs working and whatâs not â and what needs to be done (or not done)
- Welcome Wagon â There are a group of people who take turns setting up a Diary just to welcome new users and give them a chance to introduce themselves. Â If youâre new here, find the latest one and say hi!
- Froggy Bottom CafĂ© â There are a group of people who take turns setting up a Diary just to let people come in, talk about whatever is on their mind and generally let oneâs âhair downâ
Here are some of the more or less âunacceptableâ things people write about, but probably shouldnât:
- Duplicate Diaries (esp. âBreaking Newsâ) â sometimes people see something important developing in the news and want to write a Diary about it â the only problem is that someone else has already posted on it. Â Do yourself and everyone else a favor and delete your Diary if someone else has already written about it
- âGoodbye Cruel Worldâ Diaries â as in any community, people get attached to the place and when they feel they are no longer as welcomed or loved as they used to be, they write a long farewell Diary. Â Then after dozens of Comments saying âdonât go, we love youâ the Diary writer stays. (Havenât seen too much of this yet but itâs bound to be a part of the Frog Pond in the future).
- All Hat, No Cattle Diaries â no matter how important an issue or article is, sometimes people quote a source and then add little to nothing themselves. Â There are appropriate venues for linking to valuable articles (esp. in the Open Thread) if you donât have anything to add yourself about the topic
- Full Quote Diaries â under standard internet âetiquetteâ and the law in most countries, quoting an entire article from another source is usually prohibited. Â Make sure you quote just part of an article or another website and put a link (see official FAQ!) for readers to click on to read it in its entirety
- Personal Attacks â if you really feel offended by someone, send them an email! Nobody really wants to read hateful screed about another user here â weâre all here to be friends (or at least colleagues)
Guidelines For Diaries â Besides the above section, here are a few hints and tips to write Diaries that other people will appreciate:
- Put any and all images (see below) in the âExtended Copyâ section of the Diary!
- Donât pad the âMain Entryâ box with filler⊠take time to write something substantive.. youâll feel better later, I promise đ
- Try and make the title of your Diary a simple sentence that describes what youâre writing aboutâŠ
Images
Yes, you can add images (pictures) to your Diary or Comments⊠the html code is rather simple:
< img src=âimagelocationâ > (minus the spaces)
If you find an image/picture on another website and use it on Booman Tribune, the original host of the image has to âdeliverâ the image everytime a user on Booman Tribune sees it. Â This can be quite expensive as it uses up âbandwidthâ. Â The best thing for you to do if you want to include a picture in your Comment or Diary is to âhostâ the image yourself. Â Try going to Google and finding a server that will host images for little to no cost (there are many who will do it for free!).
Trusted User
This is a generally vague term, although it is explained in the Official FAQ. Â Somehow, some way, when you write enough Comments that get enough positive ratings, you are awarded (or cursed, as some people call it) the power of being a âTrusted Userâ of Booman Tribune. Â You now have the power to rate people with a â0â and also to see âhidden Commentsâ. Â
Contrary to some peopleâs opinion, being a Trusted User (or not) is not a life or death situation! Â Itâs really more of an added responsibility for those who have contributed to the community itself. Â If you gain Trusted User (TU) status but then lose it, take a deep breath! Itâs ok, you will return to TU status soon enough. Â It doesnât mean youâre a bad person or that Santa will fill your stockings will coal next year.
How Can I Tell If Iâm A Trusted User? â The simplest way to determine this is to look at the little box at the top right-hand side of your screen. Â If you see an option that says âHidden Commentsâ you are a Trusted User. Â Or if you are rating a Comment on a Diary or Front Page Story and see â0 â Super Trollâ, you are a Trusted User. Â If not, youâre not đ
Tip Jar â A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (DailyKos before 2004)⊠there were a lot fewer users.  A person would write a Diary and get maybe just three or four Comments, even though the Diary mightâve been read by 20 to 30 people.  People started to add a Comment to their own diary and called it a âTip Jarâ where people could add a rating to that particular Comment, so the person would get âmojoâ. Â
Some people on Booman Tribune feel that âTip Jarsâ are crass and do not give âmojoâ to them. Â Others feel like itâs a way to reward a person for writing a Diary they liked when the reader doesnât have the time or inclination to add a Comment saying so. Â Itâs the dealerâs choice here, really.
What is âMojoâ? â Well according to a dictionary, its an African word meaning âmagical powerâ. Â Here on Booman Tribune it refers to the combined total of ratings people get for Comments. Â The higher rated your Comments are, the more âmojoâ you have. Â Your combined total âmojoâ score is impossible to know though â the only indication is whether or not youâre a âTrusted Userâ.
Comment Ratings â This is a huge issue within the Booman Tribune community, and it essentially boils down to two different things. Â Whenever you see a Comment (and you are a registered user), you can ârateâ that personâs Comment. Â You can rate it between a 1 and a 4 (or a 0 and a 4 if you are a Trusted User). Â But the rating of Comments serves two purposes:
- Troll Vaccination â A âtrollâ is an old internet term which means someone who writes deliberately inflammatory things to upset people. Â Sometimes however people write crass or uncalled for things, and these are considered âtrollâ Comments (or Diaries). Â If the combined Ratings for a Comment falls below 1.0, then the Comment is âhiddenâ from non-Trusted User users. Â This is to keep people from hijacking this website.
- Mojo â The way people Rate your Comment often is an indication of how they feel about either you, what you said, or the issue in general. Â Sometimes this is an orgy of positive energy, with people giving you a high rating (4) or sometimes people get vindictive and give you a low rating (0 or 1) because they donât like you personally.
Giving someone a low rating simply because you disagree with what they say, rather than as a response to âtrollishâ or inflammatory behavior, is considered extremely rude and frankly it is also counterproductive for the community as a whole!
Rating Comments Is Confusing â It is, especially when you see it for the first time. Â The easiest way to do it is to rate a Comment after you read it. Â Then keep ratings Comments until you are done with the Story. Â Then when youâre completely done handing out Ratings, click on one of the âRate Allâ gray boxes.
When you click on âRate Allâ, the screen refreshes and you will lose your placemark where you are. Â The easiest way to escape this is to hit âRate Allâ when youâre completely done reading the Story.
Replying to Comments â When you see someone write a Comment and want to respond to that particular Comment, click on âReply to Thisâ under the Comment. Â As in adding a âfreshâ Comment, youâll be taken to a new page altogether and youâll lose your place back in the Story. Â The easiest thing to do is use the right button on your mouse when you click on âReply to Thisâ so it opens in another window. Â Then you can return to the first window and not lose your place!
Whatâs A User Number? â People sometimes like to look and see another personâs User Number (also called UID). Â Your user number is assigned to you sequentially based on when you registered at Booman Tribune, so the higher the number the more recently youâve arrived here. Â Sometimes people like to think that a lower user number awards some kind of special status â thatâs not true! Â It just means theyâve been here for a while so they might be more familiar with how things operate around here. Â Besides our host Boo, we are all equal here.
How Do I Find My User Number or Someone Elseâs? â Several methods are available. Â One is to hold your mouse over a personâs name (only works for Comments) and you might see a number in the lower lefthand corner of your browser. Â For other people this does not work, whether itâs a setting for your browser or something else.
Another easy way to find someoneâs User Number is to click the right button of your mouse on someoneâs name (again, only in Comments) and open that in another window. Â Then you will see their user ID number.
I Wrote a Diary/Comment And Nobody Liked It â Well believe it or not, this is more common than you think. Â Many Diaries are written every day on Booman Tribune and they canât all be equally appreciated, visited and Commented upon. Â Sometimes the hard work you do will go unnoticed or relatively unnoticed. Â Thatâs just part of the system!
Usually though, more people read your Diary/Comment than you realize. Â They just may have not chosen to either reply to it or else give you âmojoâ for it. Â If youâre writing to receive the applause and appreciation of others, youâre heading down a dangerous path. Â The best reason to write for Booman Tribune is because itâs good for you to do so and because you think others will appreciate it.
If youâre feeling like your Diaries or Comments arenât getting enough attention, then please start your own blog!
I will tell you however that people who write high-quality Comments and Diaries do end up getting noticed and appreciated for the most part â it just takes a while. Â Be patient. Â Again if you need to be the star of the show, start your own blog!
Whatâs the Recommended Diaries List? â Once youâre a registered user, you have the option to Recommend a Diary you like by clicking on the grey box entitled âRecommend This Diaryâ. Â
The Diaries that have received the most Recommendations in a certain amount of time make the âRecommended Diariesâ list which you can see from either the Main Page or the Diaries page. Â These are not necessarily the best written Diaries on Booman Tribune, only the most popular.
Diaries Keep Disappearing So Quickly! â The more users there are, the more diaries get written. Â But we still love to read what you have to say!
You can change it so that up to the 50 most recent Diaries are visible to you by changing the number at the bottom of the âRecent Diariesâ list on either the Main Page or the Diaries page. Â
How Do I Know if a Diary on a Certain Subject Has Been Written? â Excellent question! Â You have to take advantage of Booman Tribuneâs âpowerfulâ searching feature.
One way is to go to the bottom of the âRecent Diariesâ list and type in a word where it says âSearch Diariesâ then click on âGoâ.
The other way is a a little more complicated but more powerful. Â First go to the Main Page or the Diaries Page and look for the three green squares at the top. Â One will say âHomeâ, one will say âSojâs Pageâ (actually your usernameâs page) and the other will say âDiariesâ. Â Click on the one that says âUsernameâs Pageâ.
After that page loads, click on âCommentsâ. Â Then you will find yourself at a more powerful search engine, where you can search for Authors, Comments By, Comments, Diaries, Diaries By, Polls, Stories and Users.
- Authors â Refers to searching for Stories written by âMain Pageâ writers only
- Comments â Refers to searching for text within a Comment, not necessarily written âbyâ a certain person
- Comments By â Refers to searching for Comments by a certain User
- Diaries â Refers to searching for text within a Diary
- Diaries By â Refers to searching for Diaries by a certain User
- Polls â Refers to searching for text inside a Poll
- Stories â Refers to finding text within a Main Page Story only
Searching Hints â If youâre not finding what youâre looking for using the second method of Searching, try clicking either the box marked âAs Phraseâ and/or the box marked âSearch Archiveâ
Who Determines What/Who Is Acceptable Here? â Ultimately that resides with our host, Boo.  Feel assured however that the community itself will usually let you know when you are âin boundsâ of what is commonly expected.  There are no other real hard and fast rules.  Just hang around and read what people are saying and you should feel like you fit in very quickly⊠this is a friendly place.  So draw up a rock and sit a spellâŠ
A Story Is Taking Forever to Load On My Screen â This happens, especially when there are more than a few hundred Comments. Â Thereâs nothing you can really do about it except buy a faster, more powerful computer or else skip Stories which have a lot of Comments.
Whatâs This âDisplay: Threaded, Minimal, Nested, Flat, Flat Unthreaded, Dynamic Threaded, Dynamic Minimumâ Business? â Booman Tribune uses a powerful software program called âScoopâ which lets you choose how Comments are displayed on your screen. Â Believe it or not, how you see the Comments organized is not necessarily how another person sees them!
Refer to the official FAQ for more information.
Whatâs This âRate? Yes, No, Hideâ Business? â You can choose whether or not you wish to Rate Comments by clicking on either âYesâ (I want to Rate) or âNoâ (I donât want to Rate). Â If you click on âHideâ you will not see the Ratings other people have given.
How Do I Found Out How People Rated My Comment? â First go to the Comment you wrote then click on the Rating beside it. Â This will tell you who Rated you and what Rating they gave you.
How Do I Find Out Who Recommended My Diary? â Go to your Diary and then click on the box that says (using poor grammar) âWhoâs Recommended This Diary?â
Whatâs the Frog all about? â Well that frog is officially named Darwin, based on a poll conducted during the early days of the Booman Tribune. Â Itâs the mascot of this place and is the reason why BMT is often referred to as the âFrog Pondâ. Â Darwin also symbolizes what many of us hope to see, that the person who revealed a CIA agentâs identity will be âfrog marchedâ out of the White House in the near future.
Whatâs the difference between Booman Tribune and DailyKos? â Well itâs a lot more than the fact that they use different colors⊠BMT has its own pace, its own style and a different series of writers.  Itâs also more globally balanced.  Itâs calmer and friendlier and we try to chew things over rather than read and comment at a breakneck pace.  BMT was inspired by DailyKos and has a strong connection to that site but they are not identifical.  Consider them as cousins of one another⊠kissing cousins đ
Iâm Addicted to Booman Tribune Now.. Help! â First, know that youâre not the only one and that help is all around you! Â Admit your weakness and ask for guidance from a Higher Power. Â Then tell your boss so that h/she makes sure you spend more time actually working than reading Diaries on Booman Tribune. Â If you are logging on from home, please consult a loved one and admit to them you are powerless over your addiction.
What Else Do I Need To Know? â Plenty! But the most important thing is make every visit to Booman Tribune a rewarding one. Â If youâre finding yourself increasingly frustrated, it might be time to turn off the computer and go take a long walk in the fresh air of the real world. Â Pet your dog. Â Kiss your cat. Â Eat a homecooked meal. Â Take a nap. Â Go volunteer at a nursing home or soup kitchen. Â Then come back here if you feel ready.
Why Do You Sign Every Comment and Diary With the Word âPaxâ? â Excellent question⊠I do so because I am an advocate for peace and âpaxâ is the Latin word for that. Â
Pax
