Hi folks.
We moved to a new server. And we also upgraded the ‘recent comments’ feature and made it work faster by eliminating the search for replies to recent comments.
But a few things might not be working right at first. So, if you notice any problems, post them below.
Update [2005-6-30 16:21:9 by BooMan]: Don’t just give Andy complaints…show him some love too.
Maybe I’m missing something, but I need to check who has replied to my comments. It is nettiquette to do so, and continue if the reply needs it.
So how do I do that easily?
<Recent comments> works fine in the interactive stage when you are online with your conversation, but us Europeans often have a time lag between posting comments and getting replies.
Well, replies no longer show up when I click on my personal Comments and that’s a bummer. To me, the whole point of checking my comments is seeing if someone has replied and requires a follow-up. In this way, something like a conversation sometimes emerges. Without this function, there is really no reason to check comments. The alternative is clicking on the comment to see if there are any replies and that’s a time waster. Is there some way to drop it from Recent Comments but restore the function for personal Comments?
have to fix that.
Unintentional side effect. It’s 4am in Oakland where Andy lives. But we’ll get to it. Thanks for pointing it out.
Something I noticed when posting this diary was that I couldn’t preview and had to run a spellcheck before I could post a diary.
Do you have that same problem?
Boo, I haven’t tried to post adiary for ages (better rectify that) so can’t comment.
Like Sven and sjct I can’t live without seeing replies to personal comments by using the search-for-comments-by function.
I have to say that I do like the new recent comments list with the inclusion of the comment text in addition to the title.
I e-mailed both BT and EuroTrib a few minutes ago on the change in the software, prior to seeing this diary – no need to reply to the e-mail.
Hey – and thanks for hosting a great blog. How ya bearing up under the strain of all those 1500-odd users?
everything Canberra boy, sjct, soj, and sven said!
It’s also the same on the EuroTribune btw, the missing info from the “Your comments” feature.
I’m with sjct on this one 😉

Oh, and I went to listen to your music last night and it was broken. Kept trying to send me somewhere on www2.boomantribune.com with a broken link. I think it’s fixed now.
And while I’m here, may I suggest that when you do music you do it as an mp3 file to make it easier for us who aren’t using Windows? There are utilities out there that can convert from a wma file to an mp3 file, and if you can’t get one of them to work, I can do it for you. I do it all the time — one of my spare time projects is a program that takes live Internet streams and timeshifts programs I want to listen to, converting them to mp3 (or in my case, ogg vorbis) files along the way. Sort of a personal ipodder, if you will.
I restored the “replies” count on the personal comments page.
I took it out initially because I determined that it was a performance problem — in fact, just computing the number of replies on a comment is the biggest performance problem in all of Scoop (followed by computing the number of replies on a story). It sounds really absurd, but its true.
It won’t kill us to have reply counts on the comments-by search for now, but I will have to come up with an alternative way to get that number soon.
You’re all right, I don’t care what Booman says about you. (The dog, not the moderator.)
My time stamp was fine….the comments thing was the only quirky thing this morning for me.
Thanks for keeping us up and running around here…awesome site and we love what you do!
I’m in Marin and will buy you dinner and drinks anytime in the SF/Oakland area :^)
Email…and say yes to dinner…I’ll drag the nerdy Mr.Cat along to talk servers and software! Me I just talk about hiking and river rafting and outdoorsy stuff.
I noticed this morning that the timestamps are now set to EST. That I like. When I checked my comments this morning, the second comment is listed three times, so I checked and it is really only posted once (I’m still half asleep-I thought it was just me). Does this mean I get three times the mojo? Things are loading a bit faster for me on dial up.
I’m being discriminated against.
My timesetting is still Eastern Daylight. It’s in the Preferences, under some obscure sub-category. Lots of choices. You can, for example, have your time set for Sydney, or Bombay, or Harare if you wish. Or Reykjavik (thank goodness for spellcheck!).
When the server crashed a while back, all the old mojo disappeared, and with it, TU status. Mine has not yet returned.
But perhaps I haven’t said enough clever, pithy, cogent things recently, she whines. Ah, well . . .
Have a ‘4’ in sympathy…
It seems there’s something to be said for this bit about whining and invoking self-pity. Do it long enough, I could probably be a Republican politician!
I noticed the same issue with multiple appearances of a single comment on my comments list. At first, I thought that perhaps I’d accidentally hit “Post” twice in rapid succession, but in the actual thread, it’s only there once.
Hopefully, the techies will get this bug worked out when they restore the ability to show replies to each comment from users’ comment lists.
Oh thank God someone else had that happen too. I thought I was losing it…lol. Andy and Boo you guys rock and are doing one hell of a job. Keep up the great work. I also agree about replies to ones comments as they are sometimes helpful information or a good flame.
The new server is on the east coast so EDT is now the default timezone (unless changed in your user prefs).
eVERYthingseems
tobe workkkkkkkkkking fine!
GREAt sITE!
i ONlnly have one comMMENT which i tHITHNk will REALLY improve the SITE: 000100101000100000xxxxxxxxxx11010100000000000!
THaznks again!
Nice to see you over here Wry…
Now about the typing skills…..are you trying to be HAL this morning….
‘What are you doing Dave?? Dave??’ never mind – it’s Andy not Dave and I need caffeine!
For your trouble you get a complimentary BT fruit basket. Delivery will take place shortly.
My thoughts:
I am not sure I like having the whole comment in the recent comment section. I have always felt a little intimidated having my comments so out there with just the title, but now with the whole comment, it is even worse.
Also some comments are quite long, Ductape had one once that was multiple pages long, if you copied and put in word processor. Then add pics to that as well as oversize ones and I think it may be a problem.
Good points, Diane… I hadn’t quite thought that one through…
Right now the site is running extremely slow. Took about 25 seconds for this box to show up after clicking the “post comment” button.
Hmmmm. And just as I was thinking it’s running faster. I clicked on Comments and the screen came up almost immediately. Well, as immediately as it does on 56k dialup.
But I miss the answers to comments. That’s really the whole point, is to be able to converse with others. If I’m going to sit around in my jammies talking to imaginary friends, I want them to be able to answer me, dammit.
No, not you, Janet.
THIS SITE is running infinitely faster than DKos at the moment…. I was holding my breath as I tried to post a diary at DKos, watching the page slowwwwwwwwwly process, fearful I’d lose it all.
(Must remember to copy diaries in TextEdit. Must.)
It’s odd since DKos seemed to run quite fast immediately after its makeover, and that was attributed — I think — to the Scoop software upgrade. But, the last couple days, DKos has been very slow again.
There are some lurking performance issues related to bad database queries…. (e.g. see my comment above about computing the number of replies to a comment / story)… when a lot of these pile up things can get painfully slow.
Some of them I have just fixed (i.e.,, a couple of hours ago) so this is probably what was happening this morning.
FYI: I’m seeing redundant duplicate comments in my comment history. That is, the same comment listed twice, with the rating carried over to the redundant comment. Would like to see replies in the comment history restored too. –M
that should be fixed now, let me know if otherwise.
Thanks a bunch! –M
I heart you! (Listening to the Big Boss and showing some love.) Thanks for all your hard work.
BIG DITTO! I think that our Boo and Andy are missing some sleep hours. Hope they get caught up.
And, Andy, Boo is right! We shouldn’t just communicate when something’s wrong! (‘course, when I worked for an oil company eons ago, did anyone ever call when we had gasoline? Noooooo. We only heard from them when there was the oil crisis!)
a couple of weeks ago “the week of server hell” I was dreading it every time my cell phone rang… but i think thats over now.
i do appreciate the kind words and support from everyone here… even though I’m a lurker, I feel like a geniuine citizen of the frog pond. :O croak
For god’s sake don’t croak!! We need you!!
thanks for all your hard work. You are prompt responders to any concerns and handle the stress well (I hope!)
Is it possible to increase the spacing between posts on the front page? Maybe I never noticed, but they seem to be running into each other. That’s a semi-major change so if not it’s cool, it was just an observation I had.
You all are wonderful! Thanks for everything you do to make this site such a great place to visit!
I want to know why this “Andy” character always posts with a pseudonym instead of with his real name like the rest of us! 🙂

back in the BBS days…….
but if I told you what it was, I’d have to kill you.
I’ll look for buggies but I kind of wasn’t over here
due to the BW issue until now. Onward upward, congrats!
