Armchair Activism for the SCOTUS Battle

–Cuz Armando asked me write about this stuff.

From the UCC Justice And Peace Network:

In response to the July 1 resignation announcement of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the UCC 25th General Synod in Atlanta, GA, approved an emergency resolution calling for President Bush and the Senate to engage in a bipartisan process of  meaningful consultation in nominating the next Supreme Court Justice.  The Synod resolution expresses appreciation for Justice O’Connor’s balanced jurisprudence and moderating leadership and calls attention to the significance of this nomination at a time when the country is deeply divided.  This resolution urges the President and the Senate to set aside the politics of confrontation and division, and instead pursue consensus.

Justice O’Connor’s resignation creates a vacancy on the Supreme Court for the first time in over 11 years.  Her replacement will be appointed for life and will be given the responsibility of interpreting our nation’s constitutional rights. Given the Supreme Court’s role in protecting the rights and liberties of all Americans, a thorough and deliberate process of consultation and confirmation is essential.

The “advise and consent clause” in the Constitution makes the President and Senate partners in the appointment and confirmation of federal judges.  The President’s meeting with congressional leaders on July 12th was an encouraging step in the process of consultation, and one to be applauded.

Your voice is needed to encourage President Bush and the Senate to engage in a process of consultation that is thorough, fair and beyond reproach.  It is only through such a process that a consensus nominee will emerge who is independent of ideological bias and committed to protecting the rights, liberties and freedom of all Americans.

While I appreciate the UCC’s moderate tone, I feel like it might not be aggressive enough. I’m thinking we need to get the Unitarian Jihad involved here.

After all, the other side sure ain’t going to stick to an even keel for very long:

Consultation Frenzy

The White House is going out of its way to “consult” with Senate Democrats before naming a Supreme Court nominee.  More than 60 senators have been contacted by the president and/or his aides.  Yesterday, there was a small private meeting at the White House between Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN), Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter (RINO-PA), Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and the president to discuss the timing of a nomination.

So the “libs” are happy, right, for this unprecedented level of consultation?  Wrong!  In a city where no good deed goes unpunished, Senate liberals are demanding to be treated as “co-presidents.”  Senator Leahy says, “There has to be more consultation” and is demanding that the president share the name of the person whom he is thinking about nominating with Leahy and other liberals before he makes a formal nomination.

Why stop there?  In the interest of harmony, why not just let Senators Leahy, Kennedy and Clinton make the nomination.  In fact, Senator Leahy brought names with him that would be “acceptable” nominees.  Their arrogance knows no end.  Now I understand why the White House is going the extra mile, but if I were the president, at the next meeting, I would consider passing out a copy of the election returns and the Constitution.

Here’s the bottom line.  If the president nominates the kind of judge he has repeatedly promised to nominate, there is no way Senator Leahy and at least 39, or so, of his colleagues will vote “yes.”  They will scream, pound the table, attempt to smear the nominee and frighten Republicans in the process.

Why?  Because they want the high court to do the exact opposite of what we want the high court to do!  They want a court more likely to ban the Ten Commandments from a public park and more likely to find a right to same-sex “marriage.”  We want a court that will keep “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance and that stops looking to international law for guidance in its decisions.  We are counting on you, Mr. President!
