We need to put our money where OUR mouths have been for years now! We need REAL NEWS and Freedom from the corporate strangle hold that is on the media outlets. Lets support this bill.
Democrats Move to Reregulate Media
Two liberal House members who recently have been critical of what they view as attempts by conservative Republicans to take over America’s mass media and public broadcasting have now introduced a sweeping bill that would reregulate radio and TV back to the days before the 1996 Telecommunications Act.
The Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005 (MORA) is co-sponsored by Reps. Maurice Hinchey, D-N.Y. and Diane Watson, D-Calif. In a written announcement, MORA is described as legislation “that seeks to undo the massive consolidation of the media that has been ongoing for nearly 20 years.”
Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005 Would End Media Consolidation,
Provide For Wide Array Of Information Sources To Public
Washington, D.C. – In an effort to restore integrity and diversity to America’s media system, Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) today introduced the sweeping Media Ownership Reform Act of 2005 (MORA). Hinchey, who is the chairman and founder of the congressional Future of American Media (FAM) Caucus, authored the bill to fix what he sees as a broken media system in the United States in which only a select group of individuals get to determine what information Americans can receive via television, newspaper, radio, and other media.
“The current state of today’s media system threatens the ability of our democracy to function because it does not allow for the widest possible dissemination of information from diverse and antagonistic sources and shrinks the marketplace of ideas,” Hinchey said. “The Media Ownership Reform Act tackles the issue of media consolidation head on and implements new standards for a diverse media that will ensure Americans have access to a wide array of ideas and information.”
Let’s give Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) some real mojo!
If we do not get the media back we will continue to head back to the Dark Ages.
Does anyone know how to start one of those on-line petitions to get some real movement behind Hinchey and Watson’s MORA bill?
Rosee, I have contacted the People’s Email Network
http://www.usalone.com and asked them to do a special issue mailing about this bill. They keep a register of involved people and send out an email to notify us of important actions. Today’s message was to let your Congresspeople know how you feel about Rove, etc. It’s very easy – just fill in some blanks.
I ran into login trouble at The Petition Site www.care2.com, so did not put up a petition there. This is another site where you can get on a mailing list.
These two sites, along with Congress.org are great vehicles for online activism.
Hi Alice- do you have the links to those places- That would be very helpful Thanks.
I am appalled that more people don’t see how important this IS!!
I don’t like the way so many get stuck on one topic- Rove right now. I ‘exposed’ him months ago LOL! But I am just little ole me…
I was hanging out in the Foggy Bottom, trying to cadge more muffins.
