I just switched on the TV, and the news just was announced, apparently. That’s quite sad. 1938-2005. Update: Lisa Pease just sent me the ABC link. (ABC TV has returned to regular programming.)

that comes as a surprise. I knew he was sick but that was fast. That’s very sad.
He just announced it in April.
Barely 4 months ago he said good-bye. Lung cancer…hope he went peacefully. He was a Canadian, a gentleman.
Rest in peace Peter Jennings.
it was a very virulent and fast-spreading form of lung cancer that he had. As one who lost a parent to lung cancer and heart disease this year, my prayers go to his family.
If anyone needs an extra incentive to quit smoking, do it for Peter.
[Note: CNN was not too far behind ABC in its coverage. MSNBC took a little longer. Last time I checked Fox, nothing; they’re still probably popping the champagne corks at the death of another “damn librul”…]
Man I have to say I always liked Jennings better than the other big guns in networks news… And as someone that worked for a local ABC affiliate… This is especially tough.
God bless…
He had that gentle kindness that is quite typical of Canadians.
We’re close to the border and tune in to the Canadian radio stations often. There’s a sweetness — an innocent corniness — that makes us laugh. We have to suppress the kicking in of our cynical ridicule to permit ourselves to enjoy the corn. It’s just so foreign because it’s never permitted on U.S. radio or television.
civilized than we in the US. I enjoy the radio show “As It Happens” from the CBC when I can get it on NPR. As you say, Jennings was representative of that civility.
he was more sanity-based than the others.
67. Too damn young. Rest in peace, Peter.
Bizarre. I was just thinking about him today. My mother died of lung cancer (6 mos after diagnosis) Her birthday is this month so it was on my mind.
That voice…
I’ll never forget coming home from school the day of the Challenger tragedy. It was a terrible day, but that voice was a very calming presence. I’ll really miss him.
Went through something similar with my mom; she went under chemo for about 4 years, then early last year had half a lobe removed; when the cancer popped up in the other lung, she decided enough was enough…it took about 6 months for her too.
Jeez, I’m sorry to hear of your mother’s passing as well.
I don’t have to tell you that cancer is just a bitch of a disease. I have an uncle who has battled bone cancer for more than 10 years, he’s still hanging in there.
On the other hand, my mother and my father-in-law were both diagnosed with lung cancer and died within 6 months.
Cancer is just weird.
Hugs all ’round.
covering Jennings’ passing. Fox has gone back to a report from Aruba. MSNBC is back to normal programming. Hate to admit it, but CNN obviously rocks…
Well the news covering the news isn’t always pretty… I feel no one should be obligated longer than his home at ABC.
This guy is going to (rightfully) get his due. He had class… I doubt he’d want anyone running extensive continuing coverage on him especially with our space shuttle coming back down.
Besides I’d much rather have Nightline lamenting me than Fox News or MSNBC.
is back from vacation tomorrow, I’m sure he’ll have a mention of Jennings on Countdown, and do it with class. 🙂
The entire news scroll at the bottom of the CNN screen seems devoted to Jennings as well…a nice touch IMNSHO.
CNN’s coverage is giving a chance for a lot of Jennings’ colleagues (past and present) to express their condolences and memories, which is appreciated.
I would hope that the President might break from clearing brush to express his condolences as well…
KO will do a lovely job. And we should write CNN and thank them … we’re so often critical that it’s nice to appreciate them.
for bouncing this back up to the top of the front page. You too are a class act. 🙂
(And thanks for the hugs — the first year is always the toughest…)
Yikes, your mom died within the last year? I’m so sorry to hear that too…
I have to say this has been rough year…
I lost my grandmother in march, I’m not catholic but I did like Pope John Paul II…
Too many good people have passed in 05… or maybe too many good people go all the time… but 2005 has been tough
We’ve made it past most of the big first holidays without her — Thanksgiving and Christmas will probably be the worst still left.
Thanks for the good thoughts…I’m almost ready to crawl into bed and tell the spouse to wake me in 2006, since this year has practically totally sucked…
Man that’s tough… I’m so sorry to hear that.
I have been trying to help my own mother with the loss of hers this year and I remember hearing something nice that stuck with me at my Grandmother’s funeral… “You should judge your life by those you have lived it with and left the Earth with… There’s not much you can do after that…”
his voice as the first tower fell on 9/11.
He knew what had happened instantly. There was such sadness and world-weary wisdom in that voice. In it’s recognition of the loss of life and significance of what we all were watching.
He had humanity and you could hear it.
He became an American citizen mainly because of 9/11.
Asked if being a citizen made a difference, he said no,
tells you how American I have become. But one thing, “you never again feel like a guest in the country.”
Early evening 911 my husband and I watched as he broke down on the air. We wept with him, a continent away from our daughter and her safe husband in NYC.
A good man is gone.
was shocked to hear the news, they are doing coverage on cnn right now.
I missed the story that he was near death last night.
I will surely miss him..
I really thought he was much younger! He looks young.
How sad. Too many good people dying. Robin Cook. Damn
My Pop 2 weeks ago at 67 also. What a very, very sad time.
I’m so sorry about your pop’s passing. Hugs to you.
Thank you Susan
Walter Cronkite’s beloved wife died recently and i heard someone on some tv show — i forget which — say that he’s dating Carly Simon’s sister. How cute.
Really?! Wow… Well they both must live on Martha’s Vineyard (Carly and her Brother Peter do, as well as Walter Cronkite).
I worked at a local garage in the summers in the mid 90s and got to drive Cronkite’s Caddilac (broken trunk) out of the garage to park it…
It was definitely a thrill being that I’ve always been a fan…
So I walked back into the garage up to the elder mechanic (who was in a small group of people) and I handed him the keys asking: “So where’s big Walt?” not realizing he was standing right next to me…
Whoops…
I feel strangely sad about this.
I always thought Peter Jennings came off as more rational than the other anchors.
I’m sorry that this tregedy has had to happen and that science has not yet found the key to eliminating this monstrous apocalypse of the internal universe called death.
But I can’t say it better than Dunne:
Every man’s death diminishes me
For I am involved in mankind….
There is an entire diary dedicated to you at MLW.
Talking About…
I also sent you an email.
He will be missed. He left us far too young. My heart goes out to his family.
I love this site and all of archive!
