There are some things that George Bush should know about Casey Sheehan should he choose to sit down and talk with his mom. One thing he could discuss is the fact that a distant relative of his was wounded at Casey’s side. That boy, Brian Emmett, also is my second cousin. But more about that later.
Perhaps the conversation ought to start about the other seven men who died on April 4, 2004 in Sadr City.
From the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas were:
Sgt. Yihjyh L. Chen, 31, of Saipan, Marianas Protectorate.
Spc. Robert R. Arsiaga, 25, of San Antonio, Texas.
Spc. Stephen D. Hiller, 25, of Opelika, Ala.
Spc. Ahmed A. Cason, 24, of McCalla, Ala.
Spc. Israel Garza, 25, of Lubbock, Texas.
From the Army’s 2nd Battalion, 37th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Ray Barracks, Friedberg, Germany was Sgt. Michael W. Mitchell, 25, of Porterville, Calif.
And, from Casey’s unit, the 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas was Cpl. Forest J. Jostes, 22, of Albion, Ill.
Maybe George Bush could clarify why these men died. According to several press reports, they were attacked and killed by forces loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr. And where is al-Sadr today? He’s a player in the Shiite community in Iraq which is on the verge of installing Islam as the basis of government in Iraq. In effect, Casey and his comrades were killed by people whose leaders are on the verge of taking control in Iraq. It would be one thing if George Bush could tell Casey’s mom and the moms of the other boys who died that their sons gave their lives to create a secular Iraq. But we now know that is not true. They gave their lives in a cause that is allowing some Islamic extremists loyal to Iran to play a major role in the “new” Iraq.
I don’t know if Casey Sheehan’s mom is specifically angry about that fact, but my cousin, Kathy Emmett-Meek, is furious. Her son, Brian, was in Alpha Company of the 2-5 Cavalry on April 4, 2004 when Charlie Company from the same Division were ambushed. Brian and his buddies were alerted and entered Sadr City to rescue their comrades. As they lept from their vehicle they were hit with a hurricane of bullets and RPGs. One bullet shattered Brian’s left tibia. An RPG exploded nearby and peppered his right ankle with shrapnel. Brian fired several clips at the enemy and only stopped shooting when he passed out from loss of blood. My cousin and his buddies were and are warriors.
Brian survived. He received a purple heart from George Bush himself during his Easter 2004 visit with wounded troops at Fort Hood. But Brian has not fully recovered. Brian’s mom ratted on him, telling me about Brian’s current state. Then, only after I badgered him did Brian himself admit his difficulties to me. Brian is trying to handle things quietly and bravely, just as he did that day in Sadr City. Yet, he still faces more reconstructive surgery. What is really tragic is that he battles the demon of survivor’s guilt. His mom tells me that, on bad days, he wonders why he was allowed to live and his buddies died. The good news is he still loves his country and is getting on with his life. What really sucks is that he is fighting the VA Bureaucracy to get his benefits. They still have not assigned him a disability status. He described his separation from the Army as a boot in the ass and good luck.
Brian and the other wounded vets deserve more than best wishes and good cheer. They have shed their blood in service to their country and deserve our full commitment.
The ultimate irony of this story is that Brian is a distant relative of George W. Bush (his mother tells me she learned of it while doing genealogical research). Well, at least there is some good news–George W. Bush can now claim he may have a relative who was wounded in combat in Iraq.
The thing that makes me angrier than our failure to help Iraq become a better place than it was under Saddam Hussein, is the idea that guys like your cousin might find their patriotism ridiculed in 20 years and their wounds dismissed, by chickenhawks who sat this war out, and are recklessly sending other people’s children into a war of choice, with no international support, phony evidence, and no plan for success or an exit.
Sometimes I wish John Kerry had just put George Bush in a armlock during the debates until he passed out, a la the pretzel incident.
castigate ‘liberals’ for ‘abandoning’ the troops the treatment the troops got at the 2004 RNC convention (Purple hearts as band-aids) should be highlighted.
Hell, why wait til attacked? It’s time to appropriate the right-wing tactic of preemption. For 2006 and 2008 Democrats should spur the recognition of the rethugs as the anti-troop party by featuring ads with shots from the RNC-ploys of 2004.
Joe Scarborough just said he would vote for Hillary Clinton before he voted for Chuck Hagel, because Hillary has never shamelessly undermined the morale of the troops.
He also claimed that Hagel only made his comments because he wants to get in good with the editorial page of the New York Times, and said that he should go home because we don’t need his kind in Washington DC.
WTF?! Writing C&L immediately to alert him!
P.S. I have CNN on in the background. I swear to god that some CNN host(ess) just reported this:
“A judge accepted the divorce papers of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. I’m sure most of us remember where we were when we heard the news that they were engaged.”
Oh yeah … clear as a bell!
susan, you’re just joshing about that, right? I don’t think I’ve even heard anything that fawningly dumb on the entertainment shows.
NO! I was not kidding about the CNN news reader saying that. I fell off my chair.
Jon Stewart just pronounced his name “Haggle” 🙂
I can’t get over this. He’d said he’d vote for Hillary Clinton? OH WOW ..
say, i hear he isn’t running for Senate in Florida. true?

What George Bush should know about Casey Sheehan is that he volunteered to serve his country and put his life on the line for his country. He volunteered with the expectation that his Commander in Chief would not send him into an unwinnable mess. He volunteered with the expectation that his country would, in return, supply him with the tools and armor he needed to give him the best chance to survive his deployment. He VOLUNTEERED with the expectation that his sacrifice would be honored by his Commander in Chief, not by going on fucking vacation while his heartbroken Mother sits in a ditch outside his make believe ranch asking only for him to answer a simple heartwrenching question….WHAT did my son die for?
There will be a reckoning.
Beautifully put, Super.
Brian faces such a tough rehab. He deserves the BEST care we can possibly give him. His mom must be a wreck …
but we all know how vets, too often, are treated. Veterans where I live, on the Olympic Peninsula, must travel to Bremerton — a good 100+ miles on mostly mountain highways. And I think that even that facility will be closed to veterans. If they go to Seattle, they have to catch a van at like 3AM, and that’s a 2-1/2 hour trip each way, with a ferry crossing.
Then there are all the homeless vets in Seattle. My daughter and her boss have donated thousands to the homeless program for the Seattle Vet Center, and they’re seeing homeless vets from THIS war. How can that possibly happen?
Muqtada al-Sadr now?….What happened to Bush and his Bullshit line…”You’re either with us or your a Terrorist” or “We will go after Anyone harboring Terrorist” Bush has his head so far up his ass he can see out of his bellybutton. Fucking Moron. This administration should all be in JAIL. Great Diary btw/
Another great diary Larry. Number two on my outrage meter is how our vets, especially the wounded, are being or not being treated when they return. This is obscene. Another question in the BOOK of questions to be asked of dear f’up is why any returning vet has to wait for benefits/treatment. These men and women should be taken care of immediately and for the rest of their crumbled lives. The ages of the kids that were killed with Casey….avg. 24 years old. What were you doing George when you were 24? A line of coke, bottle of whiskey…evading the Vietnam war? AWOL from the National Guard?
By the way Larry, you were great on CNN’s Dead Wrong. Loved the line about maybe if the “informants” name was Screwup or Big pile of manure…cleaned that up for tv? Sure would love to know how that special came about? It did my heart good to see all the former insiders calling out Bush on the bullshit!
Thanks again, Mr. Johnson. Loved seeing you on the CNN special report this past w/e. It was something that should have been on a very long time ago.
I agree with everyone above. What is there left to say. There is not heartfelt words left to say about those homeless vets and veterans trying to get their care. I have seen this coming about for years now. This is nothing new. The only this is it is getting worse…What a sad thing to have to watch before ones eyes.
I agree with that one who said what willl dubya say now about sadar. What a crazy developemnet.
To have lost all those lives to end up where Iraq is today is such a sadness and loss for our country’s military and thier loss.
I will be interested to see what the PTSD will be over this damn war. NOt much different, I am sure that other wars, but I see new develepoments coming about with this develepoment of the winning sides. They will now questions what did they serve and loose life for ..to have this!!!! It will be a very difficult pill to swallow.
Any Islamist government in Iraq would be subverted by the U.S. as soon as possible. Our troops will have died so that a puppet can take Saddam’s place; an SOB perhaps, but our SOB, as Saddam himself was once. The Islamists will have to wait.
The neocon arguments for democracy in the Middle East are deceptions; mere window dressing. Democracies are so disobedient, so damned independent. If there were democracy in the region now Islamists would control Egypt and Algeria; and Osama bin Laden would be the president, or maybe caliph, of the country formerly known as Saudi Arabia.
Good grief, people might be even be thinking of a democracy in the United States! <snark>
Oh, the other thing: once soldiers are discharged they’re mere welfare queens. The term “veterans” is so politically correct, so 1945. <snark>
